According to reporting by The Guardian, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has finalized plans to transfer a group of arrested stowaways to the Ghanaian Embassy for further prosecution and repatriation. The individuals were apprehended aboard a vessel departing from a Nigerian port, highlighting the persistent challenges of maritime border security.

The NIS stated that the transfer is in line with international protocols regarding the treatment of undocumented migrants and maritime stowaways. Officials noted that the collaboration with the Ghanaian authorities is intended to serve as a deterrent to others attempting the dangerous journey across the Atlantic.

Daily Post confirmed the development, noting that “NIS will transfer arrested stowaways to Ghanaian embassy,” and Vanguard reported that “the suspects were found in the rudder compartment” of an international cargo ship.

Echotitbits take: The desperation of these stowaways reflects deeper socio-economic issues, but from a security standpoint, their presence on a vessel is a massive breach. The NIS and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) need to tighten “perimeter” security at the docks.
