Federal Government Freezes Creation of New Tertiary Institutions for Six Years

Reporting by Daily Post indicates that the Federal Government has imposed a six-year moratorium on the establishment of new universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Education Minister Tunji Alausa explained that this pause is necessary to allow the government and private investors to focus on the sustainability and quality of existing institutions rather than mere expansion.

The decision comes amid data showing that while over 2 million students apply for admission annually, only a fraction are absorbed by public schools, leaving many private institutions struggling with low enrollment. The policy is intended to consolidate resources and improve the global ranking of Nigerian certificates.

The Vanguard corroborated the report, quoting an educationist who stated, “We have enough quantity; what we lack now is the quality that makes our graduates globally competitive.” The Punch also covered the freeze, with a JAMB official noting, “The focus must shift to digital literacy and vocational skills rather than just awarding degrees.”

Echotitbits take: This is a bold move to curb the “degree mill” syndrome. Expect a surge in competition for spots in existing universities and a potential rise in tuition fees as institutions try to upgrade facilities without new competitors entering the market.
