Figures cited by The Guardian show that troops of the 35 Artillery Brigade have successfully intercepted 296 large bundles of suspected Cannabis Sativa. The operation took place along the Abeokuta–Igboora Road in Ogun State during the early hours of March 1st, following a high-level intelligence report regarding illicit drug trafficking in the corridor.

Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Samuel Akari, stated that the suspects abandoned their motorcycle and fled into the bush upon sighting the military patrol. The recovered substances have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation.

ThisDay validated the seizure, with an NDLEA official stating, “This intercept prevents millions of naira worth of narcotics from reaching the streets.” Leadership also reported the incident, quoting a security expert who warned, “The link between drug trafficking and the funding of kidnapping rings in the Southwest is becoming increasingly clear.”

Echotitbits take: This bust highlights the military’s expanding role in internal security and border control. It underscores the ongoing “Drug War” in Nigeria, where the intersection of narcotics and organized crime remains a major threat to regional stability.
