According to Channels TV reporting, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially announced Friday, March 20, 2026, as the first day of Shawwal, marking the Eid-el-Fitr celebration. The announcement followed the non-sighting of the new crescent on Wednesday evening, meaning Thursday will be the 30th and final day of Ramadan. The Sultan urged the Muslim faithful to use the occasion to pray for the peace and prosperity of Nigeria.

The declaration was mirrored in reports by Daily Post, which noted that “security agencies have been placed on high alert to ensure a hitch-free celebration.” Tribune also confirmed the date, quoting the Sultanate Council: “We congratulate the Ummah on the completion of the fast and wish everyone a joyful Eid.”
