The federal government has launched a new national human capital development initiative aimed at accelerating infrastructural transformation across the power sector. According to The Guardian, President Bola Tinubu introduced the ‘Power Force’ program, designed to train 5,000 young Nigerians in smart electricity meter installation and maintenance. This initiative aims to speed up the nationwide rollout of smart meters, reduce estimated billing practices, and create jobs within the clean energy transition.

Energy experts state that the lack of transparent consumer metering has long stalled meaningful progress in the domestic electricity market. By deploying thousands of certified installers, the administration intends to eliminate billing discrepancies that often cause friction between consumers and electricity distribution companies (DisCos). The program combines technical training with direct field placements, ensuring immediate economic integration for the participants.

Economic planners view this initiative as a strategic move to boost consumer trust and stabilize revenue collection across the power value chain. Providing consumers with precise billing data encourages timely payments, which helps generate the liquidity needed to upgrade transmission infrastructure. However, the long-term success of the initiative will depend on the steady availability of meter components and sustained cooperation from private distribution companies.

ThisDay reported that “the Power Force initiative serves the dual purpose of youth empowerment and resolving the persistent energy metering gap.” ThisDay further noted that “industry stakeholders welcome the influx of skilled labor to tackle distribution inefficiencies.” Leadership highlighted that “taming the estimated billing menace is crucial for building consumer trust and securing the financial health of the power sector.”

Echotitbits take:

Training 5,000 youth addresses both the metering gap and rising youth unemployment. However, the ultimate success of this initiative depends entirely on resolving long-standing supply chain issues for smart meters. If distribution companies fail to provide a steady supply of meters, these new installers will find themselves underutilized.
