Figures cited by Premium Times show that the Office of the Tax Ombud has received over 20 verified complaints from corporate entities and individual taxpayers within its first three months of full operation. Out of these cases, eight were fully resolved within the mandatory 14-day statutory resolution window.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Tax Ombud, Dr. John Nwabueze, announced that the agency is upgrading its internal capacity to resolve emerging tax disputes surrounding digital assets. This initiative includes specialized training for legal experts and forensic accountants to navigate complex virtual asset transaction structures.
The agency is also spearheading measures to eliminate double and multiple taxation across state and local government administrative levels. To ensure broader access for taxpayers, plans are underway to establish operational branches across all six geopolitical zones alongside digital grievance portals.
Reporting on the briefing, Peoples Gazette quoted Dr. Nwabueze stating, “Multiple taxation is an endemic issue that we are determined to address by engaging all relevant revenue authorities and subnational governments.” Furthermore, Vanguard captured the agency’s expansion plans, reporting that “the deployment of regional mediation offices will bridge the gap between taxpayers and state tax boards.”
Echotitbits take:
As Nigeria integrates digital assets into its formal tax net, the Tax Ombud’s proactive dispute resolution framework provides essential protection for investors and businesses. Streamlining tax collection and addressing duplicate levies will boost economic productivity and enhance voluntary compliance.
