According to an official family statement released through Marc Stein, legendary basketball coach and five-time NBA champion Don Nelson died peacefully at his home at age 86.
Nelson, who holds the second-most head coaching victories in NBA history, was celebrated for pioneering innovative offense strategies like the “Run TMC” era and point-forward concepts. During his 31-season coaching career across Milwaukee, Golden State, New York, and Dallas, he amassed 1,335 regular-season wins.

Validating his legacy, The Guardian published statements from the basketball community, quoting NBA superstar Steph Curry saying, “he had an immeasurable impact on the sport and will go down as one of the greatest minds in the history of the game”. RealGM also carried the family’s official announcement, quoting: “On Sunday morning our beloved husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather Don Nelson peacefully went to be with the Lord”.
