According to Punch, President Bola Tinubu has declared the elimination of child labour a national development priority and launched a four-year action framework covering 2026 to 2030.
The announcement was made at a national dialogue on implementation of Nigeria’s child-labour policy and action plan. The government linked child labour to education, poverty reduction, economic growth, food security, human capital and national security.
The International Labour Organization and UNICEF have long documented the links between child labour, poverty and barriers to education in Nigeria, providing broader corroboration for the policy rationale. The present announcement itself is a Nigerian government initiative.
Independent confirmation is strongest for the underlying child-protection context; the precise implementation timetable and government commitments remain dependent on subsequent programmes, funding and monitoring.
