According to The Guardian Nigeria, the Federal Government has officially thrown its weight behind the 2026 edition of the Meet Africa Fashion Festival (MAFEST). The endorsement, confirmed via the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), promises institutional support for the continental event.
The festival, themed “Take Your Place Africa!”, is expected to draw designers and cultural diplomats from over 20 African countries to Lagos. The government’s involvement is part of a broader strategy to leverage the creative economy and textile industry for national economic growth.
This endorsement marks a pivot in how the Nigerian government perceives the fashion industry—not just as entertainment, but as a critical sector for investment and job creation. Partnerships with organizations like Modela Couture and the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) have already been secured.
With official backing, MAFEST 2026 is set to be the largest fashion event in West Africa this year. Expect a surge in luxury brand pop-ups and international media coverage, as this move places Nigeria firmly as the “fashion capital” of the continent.
