Fresh Insecurity Concerns as Terror Groups Set Up New Bases in Borno

Reporting by The Guardian indicates that Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have established new strategic hideouts in the Tuba settlement of Borno State. This area is particularly sensitive due to its proximity to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) exploration sites in the Jere Local Council, raising immediate red flags for national energy security.

Local sources and farmers in the region have reported a surge in insurgent activity, noting the presence of roughly 200 motorcycles used by the terrorists for rapid movement. These groups are reportedly targeting transit routes such as the Maiduguri-Monguno and Mafa roads, which are critical for the movement of goods and people in the North-East. The emergence of these new fortresses suggests a tactical shift as insurgents seek to disrupt economic activities and government projects.

In response to these developments, civil rights groups have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government. They are demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of known terrorist leaders, citing claims that the identities and locations of these individuals are known to certain quarters. The security situation in the Konduga and Sambisa fringes remains tense as military commanders assess the threat level.

Premium Times and Channels TV have confirmed these movements. Premium Times reported that “military intelligence is currently analyzing the logistics chain supporting these new hideouts,” while Channels TV featured a security analyst who stated, “the proximity to NNPCL assets makes this a high-priority threat that requires an immediate kinetic response.”

Echotitbits take: The resurgence of terrorist hideouts near critical infrastructure like NNPCL sites is a major setback for the “stabilization” narrative. It threatens both lives and the government’s energy exploration goals. Expect a significant military “cleansing” operation in the Jere axis within the next 48 hours to secure these vital assets.
