According to reporting by **The Punch**, the Lagos State Government has implemented partial road closures across the Ikeja and Ojota axes to facilitate the commissioning of the Opebi-Mende Link Bridge. The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, issued a travel advisory urging residents to seek alternative routes between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to avoid significant delays.
The bridge, which has been under construction for over two years, is designed to drastically reduce commute times between Opebi and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Government officials describe the project as a “game-changer” for Ikeja’s urban mobility, promising to decongest major bottlenecks at Allen Avenue and the Maryland intersection.
**ThisDay** confirmed the advisory, quoting the government as saying, “motorists are advised to plan their movement to minimize traffic disruptions,” while **Vanguard** noted that “the inauguration of this critical infrastructure is expected to boost local commerce by improving logistics.”
**Echotitbits take:** Traffic in Lagos is already a contact sport, so these closures will be painful in the short term. However, the Opebi-Mende link is vital infrastructure. The real test will be whether the surrounding road network can handle the new traffic patterns once the bridge is fully operational.
