Reporting by The Punch indicates that the newly inaugurated Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has officially set up a committee to oversee the transition toward a state police structure. Disu, who was recently decorated by President Tinubu, faces the daunting task of reforming a force plagued by dilapidated barracks, poor funding, and low morale.

The IGP’s first major policy move addresses long-standing calls for decentralized policing to tackle localized insecurity. The committee is expected to draft the framework for collaboration between federal and state authorities to ensure the new system does not become a tool for political oppression.

Daily Trust validated the story, with a constitutional lawyer stating, “State police is no longer a luxury but a necessity for a federation of Nigeria’s size.” Vanguard also covered the inauguration, quoting a retired DIG who said, “Disu must first fix the welfare of the rank-and-file if he wants any reform to stick.”

Echotitbits take: Tunji Disu is walking into a minefield. While state police is popular in the South and Middle Belt, the logistical and financial burden on states will be the real hurdle. Watch for which states apply to form their commands first.
