According to reporting by Vanguard, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have initiated a massive “pre-wet season” military operation across Benue State to dismantle criminal networks ahead of the planting season. The offensive resulted in the neutralization of several bandits and the arrest of suspected cattle rustlers along the Anyiin–Ugba road, a critical agricultural corridor.
The military move is designed to reassure farmers who have been hesitant to return to their lands due to persistent threats of displacement. During the raids, security forces recovered locally fabricated firearms and rescued an injured herder, Idris Abubakar, while handing over several suspects to the Nigeria Police Force for further prosecution.
The Daily Post confirmed the military action, stating that “troops intercepted cattle rustlers and dismantled hideouts,” while Leadership reported that “special forces have been deployed to Benue to address persistent violence.”
Echotitbits take: Food security in 2026 hinges entirely on these “clearing operations” in the Middle Belt. If the military can maintain this presence through the planting season, we might see a significant cooling of food inflation by the fourth quarter.
