Reporting by The Guardian indicates that the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has finally elected its new executive committee members. The exercise, held at the International Culture and Event Centre (The Dome) in Akure, follows a period of intense internal crisis and a Federal High Court injunction that had previously nullified earlier attempts to hold the congress.
Babatunde Kolawole, an aide to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, emerged as the new State Chairman along with 35 other executives. The fresh congress was necessitated after a group of aggrieved party members challenged the conduct of previous ward and local government polls. Party leaders described the successful event as a “moment of resilience” that has effectively unified the party ahead of upcoming regional elections.
The national leadership of the APC played a significant role in brokering the peace deal that led to the vacation of the court order. Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, representing the Governor, praised the “amicable resolution” and urged the new executives to focus on grassroots mobilization and party discipline.
The Nation and Vanguard also detailed the event. The Nation reported that “the atmosphere in Akure was surprisingly calm despite the previous tensions,” while Vanguard quoted a party chieftain saying, “we have finally buried the hatchet for the sake of the party’s future in Ondo.”
Echotitbits take: This is a major win for Governor Aiyedatiwa, as his ally now controls the state party machinery. It effectively silences his internal opposition for now. However, the “aggrieved members” may still be lurking in the shadows; keep an eye on whether they file fresh suits or choose to defect to the opposition.
