According to reporting by The Gazette, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has publicly criticized Channels TV anchor Seun Okinbaloye for comments regarding the potential emergence of a one-party system in Nigeria. During a media parley in Abuja, Wike expressed his anger over Okinbaloye’s suggestion that a lack of political competition could doom Nigeria’s democracy, following the derecognition of certain opposition party leaders.
Wike argued that it was unprofessional for a journalist to take a side in the leadership crisis currently rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He maintained that while asking tough questions is part of the job, alleging a government plot to stifle opposition on national television crosses a line.
This controversy was also noted by The Cable and Daily Post, with The Cable reporting on the “war of words between the ADC and INEC” that sparked the initial commentary. Daily Post quoted civil society organizations (CSOs) who “called for action as fears mount over Nigeria’s democracy” in light of the Minister’s heated rhetoric.
Echotitbits take: The friction between high-ranking government officials and the press is intensifying. Wike’s aggressive language toward a prominent journalist highlights the growing sensitivity of the administration to critiques regarding the health of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
