    Nigeria: Project Contractors in Ekiti State Assured of Security

    The Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has assured contractors and workers working on various project sites in the State of adequate security, stressing that the security networks across the sites have been improved and expanded to guarantee their safety.

    The Governor who disclosed this during an inspection tour of all road projects across the State on Wednesday, said all ongoing road projects would be completed and delivered within the stipulated deadlines.

    The road projects visited by the Governor in company of the Commissioner for Works and Transport and the project monitoring team are the dual carriage new Ado-Iyin road, Aramoko-Erinjiyan-Ikogosi road, of Ado-Ilawe-Igbaraodo-Ibuji road; Agbado-Ode-Isinbode-Omuo road; Ilupeju-Ire_Igbemo-Ijan road and Oye-Iye-Ikun road.

    The Governor who expressed satisfaction over the quality of work done in the places visited disclosed that the expertise, technicality, and materials deployed in the construction of the new Ado-Iyin road would make it last for a period of thirty years without damage.

    He said; “We are just getting along with our work. We will deliver it just as we have promised our people.

    “You can see yourself, look at the stone base, it is almost a foot and you are still going to have two layers of asphalt on top of this stone base. It tells you that this road will go on for a period of thirty years without any damage.

    “I am sure you noticed some difference in security arrangement because we want those that are working to be safe and secured. We have improved and expanded the security network around here.”

    Also the Director of the Company handling the rehabilitation of Ado-Ilawe-Igbaraodo-Ibuji road, Mr. Folorunso Omoya disclosed that the Governor approved the construction of drainages along the roads to forestall flooding and ensure the durability of the road.

    Mr. Omoya said the rehabilitation of the roads and construction of drainages were carried out according to the technical specification issued by the State Ministry of Works, assuring that the road would stand the test of time.

    He said; “Mr. Governor approved the job and we are have done the job in accordance to specifications and I believe the governor was satisfied.

    “It was just rehabilitation but of course water was disturbing the road at many locations even at points where we don’t expect. The governor has approved that drainages be constructed at some points in accordance with technical specifications from the Ministry of Works and we have done exactly that.

    “Ado to Ilawe to Igbaraodo to Ibuji, all the problem at the location has been tackled and we believed that the road will stand the test of time”.

    The Governor was accompanied on the inspection by the Commissioner for Works and Transport Mr. Sola Adebayo, the Special Adviser on Road Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Sunday Adunmo, and other Government officials from the Ministry of Works and Transportation.

    Ekiti: Governor Fayemi Inaugurates Multi-Stakeholder Initiative for Open Governance

    Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi on Monday further demonstrated his administration’s commitment to open governance, transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement with the inauguration of the steering committee of Open Government Partnership (OGP).

    Dr. Fayemi, who inaugurated the Committee at the Governor’s Office, Ado- Ekiti, said the OGP initiative was in consonance with his restoration agenda as clearly spelt out in the Five Pillars of his administration.

    The OGP is an international multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at promoting open governance, citizen’s empowerment, fight corruption, and harness new technology to strengthen governance in member states.

    The steering committee which is to be coordinated by the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Femi Ajayi, had the Director-General, Office of Transformation and Service Delivery (OTSD), Prof. Mobolaji Aluko; Special Adviser, Bureau of Public Procurement, Mr. O’Seun Odewale; Permanent Secretary (Finance) Mr. Folorunso; Permanent Secretary (Budget) Mr. Adeleke Adefolaju; Accountant General, Mrs. Titilayo Olayinka and Special Adviser (CSO), Mr. Biodun Oluleye.

    Others include Prof. Oluwadare CT, Olafunsho Olajide from Disability Not a Barrier Initiative; President Ekiti Chambers of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), Chief Kola Akosile; and Representative of the Institution of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Mrs. Agbaje.

    Members of the steering committee, according to the Governor, were selected from civil society organizations, professional bodies, youth parliaments, public service, and other interest groups in order to ensure more commitment from government to promote open governance, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technology to strengthen governance in Ekiti State.

    The Governor explained that his administration has always prioritised inclusion of the needs and aspirations of towns and communities in the State’s annual budgets, adding that the OGP initiative would increase collaboration between government and other stakeholders to improve the standard of living of the people in the state.

    He said: “The Open Government Partnership initiative will also promote more collaboration work within government by promoting mutual accountability, information sharing, and coordination among MDAs. This will promote efficiency in government and delivery of the goals of the five pillars.”

    Fayemi explained that OGP would further strengthen his administration’s reforms in open budget, open contracting, revenue transparency, beneficial ownership transparency, assets disclosure, access to information, citizens’ engagement, and empowerment.

    Noting that Ekiti was the first State to join OGP in South-western Nigeria, Governor Fayemi expressed delight that his administration’s efforts at deepening good governance and embracing inclusive participation are gaining recognition not only in the country but at the international level.

    He said; “As a responsible government, we have always insisted that all government functionaries demonstrate the understanding of accountability and transparency in their various activities. The policy areas are the right to information, gender and inclusion, digital governance and rights, protection of civic space and natural resources, and fight against corruption.

    “The OGP was launched in 2011 with eight (8) founding member government. In July 2016 Nigeria, through the efforts of Open Alliance, joined the partnership as a 70th member country. To deepen on-going institutional and policy reforms in Ekiti State, we applied for membership of Open Government Partnership in October 2019, the application was graciously approved.”

    Earlier, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Femi Ajayi stated that the initiative involves engaging citizens in issues of government adding that the benefits of the partnership were enormous.

    Ajayi said that such a partnership if well-coordinated would cement the already cordial relationship between the government and the civil society.

    Governor Fayemi okays N145 per metre for broadband deployment

    Ekiti State has now become the cheapest state for broadband investment in Nigeria following an Executive Order signed by the State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi today, May 14, 2020, which brings the Right of Way charges down from N4500 to N145 per metre.

    In a statement, the Governor who stated that the Executive Order is part of ongoing efforts to reform the Ease of Doing Business in the State, affirmed that Ekiti is ready to attract broadband investments having now complied with the approved charges by the National Executive Council (NEC).

    “Ekiti is the first state in Nigeria to comply with the NEC approved Right of Way charges for broadband thus becoming the cheapest state for broadband infrastructure investment as 1km of cable will now cost just N145,000 as against N4.5m previously.

    “This decision will ensure Ekiti achieves full broadband penetration by 2021 to attract new businesses, create jobs, improve access to quality healthcare and digital education while improving internally generated revenue”, the Governor noted.

    He added that the decision on reducing charges on broadband deployment in the state aligns with the ongoing development of the Ekiti Knowledge Zone, designed to be Nigeria’s first service based innovation park.

    Last year, Governor Fayemi inaugurated reforms initiatives to improve Ease of Doing Business and indices that will make Ekiti State an attractive destination for national and international investments within a 5-year term.
