New Computer Village at Katangowa Lagos Ready in 24 Months

Lagos State Government-approved developer for the new Information Communication Technology (ICT) Market at Katangowa, Bridge Ways Limited, has assured that the first phase of the project would be ready in the next 24 months.

Speaking on behalf of the developer, Jimmy Onyemenam said the completion of the project would facilitate the relocation of the ICT market (Computer Village) in Ikeja to Katangowa.

Onyemenam stated this during a visit to the new site by the executives of the Phone and Allied Products Dealers Association (PAPDA) in company of other stakeholders of the Computer Village.

Onyemenam explained that the relocation would not change what was being done at the Computer Village in Ikeja but rather, enhance it as it would house more facilities.

The new ICT market, he said, would have an industrial park where trailers and containers could be parked by major exporters, warehouses and an assembling plant for coupling handsets and computers.

The developer added that Katangowa would also house eight-floor innovation and technology hub, which would be the largest in Africa.

In his remarks, PAPDA President, Ifeanyi Akubue, said the stakeholders would go back home to tell the people on the reality of the new ICT market.

Akubue assured that the executives would sensitise their members to key into the project by acquiring the shop on time, so as not to be left out, pointing out that the movement was long overdue, as members were looking forward to a bigger and more conducive environment.

FG, Lagos Seek Motorists’ Cooperation Ahead of Six-month Partial Closure of Third Mainland Bridge for Repair from July 24

Ahead of six-month partial closure of Third Mainland Bridge for maintenance work from July 24, the Federal Government and Lagos State Government have appealed to motorists and Lagosians to cooperate with government officials and appropriate agencies during this operation.

Speaking during a press conference jointly addressed by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olukayode Popoola; Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Frederic Oladeinde; and Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Works, Aramide Adeyoye; on Tuesday at Alausa in Ikeja, these officials assured Lagosians that necessary measures would be put in place to reduce gridlocks during partial closure of the bridge.

To Popoola, there would be diversion of traffic in two phases during the partial closure of the bridge between July 24, 2020 and January 24, 2021.

He said the Phase One of the diversion, which would last for three months for repairs of the Oworonsoki bound lane of Third Mainland Bridge, would be for morning traffic from 12am to 1pm from Oworonshoki to Lagos Island on the Lagos Island bound lane, while the afternoon traffic from 1pm to 12am would be from Lagos Island to Oworonsoki on the Lagos Island bound lane.

The Federal Controller of Works added that the Phase Two of the diversion, which would last another three months for repairs of the Lagos Island bound lane of Third Mainland Bridge, would be for morning traffic from 12am to 1pm from Oworonsoki to Lagos Island on the Oworonsoki bound lane, while the afternoon traffic from 1pm to 12am would be from Lagos Island to Oworonsoki on the Oworonsoki bound lane.

Popoola, while speaking on the inconveniences the maintenance of the bridge might cause motorists, said the Federal Government and Lagos State Government would work with appropriate agencies for traffic control to direct and help traffic movement in the affected areas and alternative routes.

“Motorists are advised to also ply these alternative routes: First, from Carter Bridge through Iddo through Oyingbo to join Adekunle ramp inward Oworonsoki. Secondly, from Ijora Olopa through Western Avenue to Ikorodu Road,” he said.

On his part, Oladeinde said priority would be given to those driving from Mainland to the Island in morning and afternoon to use Third Mainland Bridge, while those driving against traffic would use the alternative routes.

The commissioner assured motorists that Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would work with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in all the alternative routes to ensure that motorists have a smooth journey during the partial closure of the bridge.

Oladeinde, while stressing the need for reduction of vehicles on the road during the partial closure of the bridge, advised that those who don’t have any genuine reason to be on the road to stay at home.

He said there would be increase in number of public vehicles for people to leave their vehicles at home to make the road less congested, adding that the public vehicles would be available and affordable for road users.

According to him, “If you don’t have to travel, I will advise that you stay at home, so that we can minimise the number of vehicles on the road.

“If you can work at home, please do. But if you can’t, we will be on the road for you to get to your destination as quickly as possible.”

The commissioner also advised people to use alternative transport such as ferries, assuring that there would be increase in number of fleets by Lagos Ferry Services in the morning for people from Ikorodu and Mile 2 as alternative transportation.

Also speaking, Adeyoye appreciated the Federal Government for bringing the repair of Third Mainland Bridge on board.

She said Lagos State Government has commenced necessary preparatory works on all the alternative routes in the state to make them motorable for the commuters.

Adeyoye said the state would do its best within two weeks to work on all the roads that may likely cause gridlocks to be free of potholes.

She also warned trucks and vehicles that are not road worthy or serviceable to stay away from Lagos roads.

Aftermath of a fatal boat accident that occurred on Friday at about 8pm along Ikorodu Channel, the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led Lagos State Government has reiterated the ban on night travel.

The governor warned all ferry operators and passengers against violating the laid down rule of ‘No Night Travel’ on Lagos State waterways.

Speaking on behalf of the Sanwo-Olu administration, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Frederic Oladeinde, said the avoidable boat mishap occurred after an overloaded 20-passenger capacity commercial ferry took off illegally from Ebute-Ero Jetty around 8pm heading towards Ikorodu, but unfortunately ran into an unforeseen object on the waterways causing the boat to capsize.

He said the immediate rescue efforts deployed by the Sanwo-Olu administration, comprising of Lagos State Inland Waterways Authority (LASWA) search party, local boat operators search team, the Marine Police and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), were able to save 16 passengers, one in critical condition, while six deaths were recorded.

The commissioner, alongside LASWA General Manager, Damilola Emmanuel, who was at the Ikorodu scene of the incident, commiserated with the families of the dead passengers and assured that the violators of the mishap would be prosecuted as the unfortunate incident is already under investigation.

Oladeinde appealed to all ferry operators to desist from acting contrary to the stipulated safety guidelines in order to avoid such incidents.

He said if the rule of ‘No Night Travel’ on the waterways from 6pm had been strictly observed by the operators, the accident could have been averted.

In his remarks at the scene of the incident, LASWA general manager reiterated that, henceforth, any operator who violates any of the laid down safety guidelines, especially the ‘No Night Travel’ rule, would be arrested by the Marine Police and the boat involved confiscated.

He also admonished passengers to stop waterways night journeys as any passenger found on board of such boats after the stipulated time would also be prosecuted in accordance with the relevant laws of the state.

Lagos to evacuate drainage silts as early morning rainfall causes building collapse in Yaba

    By Idowu Sowunmi

Lagos State Government has promised to focus its immediate attention on the evacuation of silts removed from all cleared drains in the state.

This was coming as Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) disclosed that there was a partial building collapse at 6, Olonode Street, Alagomeji in Yaba, in the early hours of Monday due to the heavy rainfall in the area.

Addressing journalists after the second round inspection tour of ongoing drainage project sites in Surulere, Lagos Mainland and Somolu local government areas, Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, said findings have shown that several drainage channels, which had been cleared in the past, are quickly filled with dirt again due to non-evacuation of the silts in time.

He assured that work is ongoing at various canals and drainages in order to ensure the free flow of wastewater.

“This is the second phase of the inspection tour we commenced last week. It’s an ongoing process. The inspection is based on the directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu that the ministry’s officials must continuously go out to monitor closely and ascertain the level of work being carried out by the contractors assigned to clean these canals,” Bello said.

The commissioner added that the Sanwo-Olu administration has been able to reduce indiscriminate waste disposal by residents to an appreciable level, noting that the government would not relent in performing its responsibilities of maintaining flood-free, clean and hygienic environment in Lagos State.

Bello was accompanied on the inspection tour by the Special Adviser Drainages, Joe Igbokwe, and Permanent Secretary, Lekan Shodeinde.

While expressing satisfaction with the level of work at most of the project sites, he noted that the attention of project contractors has, however, been called to few noticeable lapses in some areas.

On the other hand, the commissioner expressed dissatisfaction with the level of work done at Fatai Kadiri Drain (Opeyemi Fola-Agoro Collector Drain), demanding that contractors should revisit the area for more dredging, while they should immediately remove some of the culverts that were wrongly positioned.

Some of the drainage channels and canals visited include Somolu, Kosofe, Lagos Mainland, Surulere, Alausa Ikeja, System 2/Fola-Agoro, Gbagada/Bariga Channel and Anthony Oke.

Other projects inspected are: Opeyemi Fola-Agoro collector drain, dredging of Ojo-Oniyun-Olaleye (by Park Lane), Otumara collector drain, Alaka – Tejuosho channel (System 4) Alaka, dredging of Carter-Railway channel Alaka, Nathan collector drain, dredging of Bush Arowojobe channel, Atunranse canal, System C6 by Fashoro/Akobi Crescent and System C6 by LUTH Idi – Araba.

Meanwhile, a building has suffered partial collapse in Yaba area of Lagos due to heavy rainfall.

Speaking on the incident, LASBCA General Manager, Engr. Biola Kosegbe, said the collapsed building was a three-floor structure and had previously been identified, sealed and marked for demolition, while all occupants had been evacuated by the agency before the unfortunate incident.

“The structure, which had hitherto failed the integrity test carried out by the agency, had been earmarked for removal by LASBCA. With the latest development, the officials of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) have commenced the immediate demolition of the building to prevent any loss of lives,” she said.

Kosegbe urged owners of old buildings in the state to, as a matter of urgency, ascertain the level of structural stability of their property to avert collapse, most especially with the present raining season.

The general manager explained that statistics has shown high incidence of building collapse during this period.

Kosegbe maintained that the present administration would leave no stone unturned in sanitising the building construction industry removing all illegal or distressed buildings, as well as structures that are not in conformity with the state building laws, regulations and standards.

She reaffirmed the commitment of the agency in ensuring that all building owners as well as developers across the metropolis comply strictly with all regulations and safety precautions, in order to prevent or reduce the occurrence of building collapse in the state.
