According to Premium Times reporting, a three-person transitional council has been formed to govern Iran following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The council consists of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and a member of the Guardian Council.

The council will manage the country’s affairs until the Assembly of Experts, a body of 88 influential clerics, elects a permanent successor. This transition comes at a period of extreme volatility, as Iran remains embroiled in military exchanges with Western-allied forces.

The death of the long-standing leader has sent ripples through global markets, particularly affecting oil prices. International observers are closely watching the transition for any signs of policy shifts regarding Iran’s nuclear program and its regional military posture.

The transition was also reported by The Nation, which highlighted the “extraordinary security measures in Tehran,” while Channels TV noted that “Nigeria has warned its citizens in the region to stay indoors during the official mourning period.”

Echotitbits take: The passing of Khamenei is a tectonic shift in Middle Eastern politics. For Nigeria, the primary concern is the potential for a spike in global oil prices and the safety of the diaspora. Watch for the Assembly of Experts’ choice, as it will determine the region’s stability for decades.
