Tribune reports that the National Automotive Design and Development Council is moving toward completion of the proposed National Automotive Industry Bill 2026 after consultations with manufacturers and other sector participants.
The proposed legislation seeks to create a more durable regulatory and industrial framework for vehicle manufacturing, assembly and component production.
Industry representatives are pushing for predictable tariffs, investment incentives and measurable local-content obligations rather than a framework focused mainly on licensing and regulation.
The Daily Times described the legislation as a “critical step” toward a competitive automotive sector, while City Business News said stakeholder recommendations would “directly inform the final Draft Bill.”
Echotitbits take: Nigeria’s automobile policy has suffered from inconsistency. A credible law should make long-term assembly and component manufacturing economically preferable to simply importing finished vehicles, while avoiding protection that leaves consumers paying more for inefficient production.
