In an update published by Punch Newspapers, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has strongly re-committed Nigeria to the foundational objectives of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Speaking on the sidelines of the African Air Transport Convention and Expo in Lomé, Togo, the minister highlighted that seamless, unrestricted sky connectivity across the continent remains the single most important variable for unlocking Africa’s latent economic power.
The minister explained that the federal government is heavily focused on working alongside neighboring African states and regional aviation regulatory bodies to harmonize policies, optimize aging airport infrastructure, and attract heavy private investment. The grand strategy centers around creating a frictionless path for the movement of goods, corporate travelers, and tourists across geopolitical borders.
Further elevating Nigeria’s presence at the international expo, Keyamo led a senior diplomatic delegation to receive former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whose presence at the convention underscores the historical weight behind continental integration projects. The event has pooled prominent aviation policy architects, global financiers, and airline executives from across the globe.
The diplomatic push was validated across alternative aviation desks. Vanguard Media reported closely on the regional engagement, stating that “Nigeria remains fully aligned with the single sky vision for Africa to drive down travel costs.” At the same time, details carried by Daily Post Nigeria observed that “aviation infrastructure expansion will drive continent-wide trade integration and elevate domestic carriers.”
Echotitbits take: Keyamo’s open advocacy for SAATM is a bold step, but the real barrier has always been protectionism from individual African nations fearing competition for their struggling national airlines. For Nigeria to truly benefit from an integrated sky, it must urgently resolve its lingering foreign exchange challenges for international carriers and fix local airport operational inefficiencies. The true sign of progress will be the signing of concrete, multi-country bilateral route expansions in the coming months.
