Data published by Business Times reveals that the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) experienced a massive surge in market activity during the trading week ending August 14, 2026, with equity investors exchanging a record 12.153 billion shares valued at N176.058 billion across 224,146 transactions. The trading volume surged by 126.8 percent compared to the preceding week.

Despite the heightened transaction volume, profit-taking activities by institutional investors led to a minor pullback in broader market indexes. The NGX All-Share Index declined by 1.20 percent to close at 242,619.20 points, while total market capitalization stood at N156.624 trillion.

Financial services dominated the weekly activity, accounting for 92.25 percent of total equity turnover by volume. Trading was heavily concentrated in key stocks including Fortis Global Insurance, Cornerstone Insurance, and Consolidated Hallmark Holdings, which together accounted for over 78 percent of the week’s total traded volume.

Validation:

Daily Nigerian highlighted the trading figures, noting that “investors traded 12.15bn shares worth N176.06bn” despite profit-taking in the equity market. PM News Nigeria also detailed the market performance, stating, “NGX: Investors trade record 12.15bn shares worth N176bn as Market slips 1.20%” after strong rallies in recent months.

Echotitbits take:

The record share volume alongside a minor index dip indicates strategic portfolio rebalancing and profit locking rather than broader economic fatigue. Watch for continued capital inflows into heavy-cap insurance and banking stocks in upcoming trading sessions.
