According to reporting by The Punch, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has successfully expanded the national identity database to capture over 136 million unique citizen enrollments. This statistical milestone coincides with the formal commencement of a comprehensive system-wide overhaul engineered to optimize identity verification architectures and eliminate duplicate datasets.
The biometric database expansion is central to the federal government’s broader economic plans to streamline digital public infrastructure and enhance tax administration systems. NIMC leadership stated that the technical upgrades will integrate advanced security protocols to prevent data breaches while enabling real-time identity authentication for financial institutions and immigration agencies.
The commission is also focusing efforts on capturing hard-to-reach rural populations to ensure comprehensive inclusion. Under the current modernization phase, legacy infrastructure is being retired in favor of cloud-optimized storage nodes designed to handle heavy transactional volumes without service latency.
The landmark enrollment figure has been highlighted by several prominent outlets.
