THISDAY reports that six Nigerian-listed companies have secured positions in the FTSE Frontier 50 Index following Nigeria’s return to frontier-market classification.
The group includes some of the country’s most heavily capitalised banking, telecommunications and industrial companies, improving Nigeria’s representation within global emerging and frontier investment benchmarks.
The change is particularly important because passive and active institutional managers often use FTSE indices when deciding which countries and stocks merit portfolio attention.
Premium Times said FirstHoldCo’s admission would strengthen visibility among “global institutional investors,” while market reporting noted Nigeria’s formal return to “Frontier Market” status after a period outside the classification.
Echotitbits take: Reclassification is a vote of improving market functionality rather than a guarantee of capital inflows. To retain the status, Nigeria must preserve FX liquidity, market accessibility and investors’ ability to repatriate dividends and sale proceeds.
