According to The Guardian, former presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced strong opposition to the compulsory adoption of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for all secondary schools. Obi warned that enforcing a digital-only format without providing the necessary ICT infrastructure would disenfranchise students in rural and underserved communities, further widening the educational gap in Nigeria.
Speaking at a school event in Anambra, Obi argued that while digitalization is necessary, it must be preceded by a massive investment in school laboratories and reliable electricity. He cautioned that many schools currently lack the basic facilities to register candidates under the new CBT guidelines, which could lead to a massive drop in examination enrollment.
In response to these concerns, some philanthropists have begun donating ICT centers to schools to help them meet the new requirements. However, Obi insists that private intervention alone cannot bridge a gap created by systemic government neglect.
ThisDay reported that several civil society groups have joined Obi in calling for a phased implementation of the policy. A school principal quoted in The Nation stated, “We cannot test children on computers they have never touched in a classroom.” Meanwhile, Daily Post quoted an education official who argued, “The transition to CBT is inevitable if we are to eliminate examination malpractice, but the timeline must be realistic.”
Echotitbits take: Obi is tapping into a very real anxiety among parents and educators. While CBT reduces cheating, the “digital divide” is a legitimate threat to national literacy rates. Expect this to become a major talking point in the upcoming education reform debates.

Proposed ‘Anim State’ Gains Momentum Among South-East Leaders
Traditional rulers and political leaders in the South-East are reportedly rallying behind the creation of “Anim State” (an Anambra–Imo-derived proposal) as a path to addressing perceived regional marginalization and balancing the number of states across zones.
Advocacy: Prominent voices are urging various state-creation movements (Anioma, Aba, Adada, and others) to align behind a unified proposal to improve chances of meeting constitutional requirements.
Political context: Supporters argue the initiative could help reduce political tensions and refocus attention on development, though critics question fiscal viability in the current climate.
Echotitbits take: State creation is constitutionally demanding and politically complex. Even if momentum grows, economic viability and revenue sustainability will be the decisive hurdles, especially under tight federal allocations.

2025-12-20 09:45:00In a report published by The Punch, a student of St. Charles College, Onitsha, Ikechukwu Ifechukwu, won Anambra’s 2025 Healthy Living Cooking Competition linked to First Lady Dr Nonye Soludo’s school programme.
The event in Awka brought students from all 21 local government areas to compete on healthy meal preparation under time limits, with judging based on hygiene, taste, presentation and service.
Organisers say the aim is to strengthen nutrition awareness and practical life skills among young people, while also challenging gender stereotypes around cooking.
Daily Post described the outcome as a male student who “emerged winner” of the cooking competition in Anambra. The Punch quoted Mrs Soludo saying the initiative “defies stereotypes and traditional misconceptions,” adding that schoolboys have now won for two straight editions.
Echotitbits take:
It’s lifestyle content with a policy edge: nutrition habits built in school can scale into public health outcomes. Watch for whether the programme expands, how schools track nutrition outcomes, and whether local foods and hygiene education become more visible in the curriculum.Source: The Punch — December 20, 2025 (https://punchng.com/anambra-college-student-wins-soludos-cooking-competition/)

Obiano Sacks Security Aide, James Nwafor, over Violations of Human Rights
The ongoing #EndSARS protest against police brutality has scored some points as Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, sacked a former Commanding Officer of the disbanded Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) in Awkuzu, James Nwafor (retired), who has been repeatedly mentioned in the media for his high-handedness against crime suspects and unspeakable violations of human rights.
Nwafor had retired from the service and picked up an appointment as an advisor to Obiano on security matters.
Addressing protesters in Awka on Thursday, Obiano announced the sack of Nwafor and assured the people of Anambra State that the sacked security aide and other officers who circumvented the law and indulged in human rights violations while in service in the state would be brought to book.
The governor also announced that a special panel headed by Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice had been set up to document human rights violations and abuses by the defunct SARS with a view to getting justice for victims and bringing closure to old injuries.
He also assured that he would personally visit all the facilities of the defunct SARS in the state and effect immediate release of suspects who are unlawfully held in the cells.
Obiano, in a statement by his Media Aide, James Eze, commended the protesters for conducting themselves peacefully so far and implored them to leave the Enugu-Onitsha Highway since their demands had been met.
