Former Benue Electoral Chief Arraigned Over Alleged N1.1 Billion Fraud

Reporting by Tribune Online indicates that the EFCC arraigned Tersoo Loko, former chairman of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC), alongside 10 others, on a 30-count charge involving alleged misappropriation and money laundering totaling about N1.1 billion. Prosecutors allege that funds meant for the 2020 and 2022 local government elections were diverted through front companies and false records.

The court heard that out of an alleged N1.6 billion allocation, only about N565 million could be accounted for. The case has been adjourned as the court considers bail applications, with the defendants reportedly remaining in custody pending decisions.

Daily Post verified the proceedings in Makurdi, and Vanguard quoted prosecutors describing the allegations as a brazen diversion of resources intended for grassroots democracy.

Echotitbits take: State-level electoral corruption is a major reason local government polls are widely viewed as pre-determined. If the EFCC secures a strong conviction, it could become a deterrent ahead of the 2027 cycle—especially for officials managing electoral logistics and procurement.

  • Former Attorney General Aondoakaa Demands US Air Strikes on Benue Bandits

Former Attorney General Aondoakaa Demands US Air Strikes on Benue Bandits

According to The Punch, former Attorney General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, has made a controversial call for the Nigerian government to invite US military air strikes against bandits terrorizing Benue State. Aondoakaa argued that the local security apparatus has been overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the gangs and that international intervention is now required to prevent a total collapse of order in the Middle Belt.

The senior lawyer suggested that the US could deploy precision drones similar to those used in counter-terrorism operations elsewhere. His remarks have sparked a fierce debate over national sovereignty and the effectiveness of current military strategies. Critics argue that foreign intervention could complicate the local conflict, while supporters believe it is a necessary ‘shock therapy’ for the escalating violence.

Validation of these remarks appeared in Daily Post and Leadership. Daily Post reported that ‘Aondoakaa’s proposal has divided the legal and security community,’ while Leadership quoted a security analyst who warned: ‘Inviting foreign strikes on your own soil is a dangerous precedent that rarely ends well.’

Echotitbits take: This is a desperate call that reflects the level of frustration in Benue State. While highly unlikely to happen—as the US rarely intervenes in internal banditry—it puts immense pressure on the Nigerian Air Force to show more ‘precision’ in their own operations. Watch for a defensive statement from the Defence Headquarters in response to Aondoakaa.

  • US Congressman Moore Vows Report to Trump After Benue Visit, Alleges ‘Genocidal Campaign’ Against Nigerian Christians

US Congressman Moore Vows Report to Trump After Benue Visit, Alleges ‘Genocidal Campaign’ Against Nigerian Christians

A member of the United States House of Representatives, Riley Moore, has renewed claims that Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt are facing what he calls a “genocidal campaign” by Fulani militants, following a recent congressional mission that visited Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Benue State. Moore, who represents West Virginia, says he is preparing a detailed report for former US President Donald Trump on the violence and the humanitarian crisis he witnessed.

Moore led a small US delegation that travelled to Nigeria to investigate reports of targeted attacks on Christian farming communities. In Benue, the team met displaced families, church leaders and traditional rulers, including Catholic bishops Wilfred Anagbe and Isaac Dugu, as well as the Tor Tiv. Several reports quoting the congressman say he was told that more than 600,000 people—mostly Christian villagers—are now sheltering in IDP camps across the state after being driven from their homes.

In interviews and social-media posts, Moore described what he heard in the camps as some of the most distressing testimonies of his career. Survivors recounted attacks on villages, killings of relatives and destruction of farms and churches. One woman was said to have lost five children in a single raid, while another reportedly had her unborn baby cut from her womb after her family was killed. Moore accused armed groups he described as “Fulani and Islamist radicals” of carrying out a coordinated effort to drive Christians from their ancestral land.

The congressman has linked his visit to a broader push in Washington to respond more forcefully to religiously targeted violence in Nigeria. Last month he introduced a resolution in the US Congress condemning the persecution of Christians and calling for stronger action to protect vulnerable communities. He has now said he will submit a “high-level” briefing to Trump, outlining ways the United States could work with Nigeria on a joint response to terrorism and mass displacement if Trump returns to the White House.

Nigerian officials have also engaged with the delegation. Moore and his team met National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other senior figures in Abuja to discuss the security situation and ongoing counter-terrorism operations. The Nigerian government has generally rejected the “genocide” label, insisting that the country’s overlapping crises involve terrorism, banditry, farmer–herder clashes and criminal violence affecting multiple communities, not only Christians. Officials say they are working to secure rural areas, support state governments and resettle IDPs where possible.

The visit and Moore’s language have, however, drawn pushback from some Nigerian groups. A Muslim organisation recently accused the US delegation of consulting mainly Christian actors and of framing the conflict in narrow religious terms, warning that such portrayals risk deepening mistrust and ignoring attacks suffered by Muslims and other groups in the same regions. Nigerian and international analysts have likewise argued in separate commentaries that while atrocities and mass displacement are undeniable, the violence is complex and does not always fit neatly into a single “Christian genocide” narrative.

Despite the disagreements, the congressional tour has again pushed Nigeria’s Middle Belt crisis into the centre of US and diaspora debates. For displaced families in Benue’s camps, the key question is whether heightened attention from Washington will translate into more effective protection on the ground—and faster moves towards justice and safe return—for all communities caught up in the country’s overlapping conflicts.

  • If they kill Gov Ortom, you’ll be responsible – Gov Wike to Buhari-led Government

If they kill Gov Ortom, you’ll be responsible – Gov Wike to Buhari-led Government

Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike Saturday warned that should his counterpart in Benue State, Governor Samule Ortom be killed, the Federal Government of Nigeria be ready for a civil war.

The threat was coming after the alleged assassination attempt on the life of Governor Ortom by “herdsmen”.

“The Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government would be held responsible if Governor Ortom is assassinated. If they kill Ortom, they should be prepared that there will be no more Nigeria. It could lead the nation to a civil war and they should be prepared to bury Nigeria.

“This is not a first, during the 2019 elections the former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Major General Jamil Sarham, and APC Chieftains had concluded plans to assassinate me.

“We have gotten to such a low point where even incumbent Governors are brazenly threatened with death”, Governor Wike lamented.

Also, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday condemned the attack on Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, describing it as “reckless” and an “assassination attempt”.

Governor Ortom was attacked earlier on Saturday by suspected herdsmen while visiting a farm in Makurdi.

But his security detail was able to repel them.

Mr Ortom said he ran for “more than one and a half kilometres without stopping” to escape the assault.

“The party calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to put machinery in motion by ordering an immediate manhunt, arrest and prosecution of the assailants and beef up security around the governor,” the PDP said in a statement signed by spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan.

“The PDP expresses shock that the assailants trailed Governor Ortom and opened fire on him and his aides along Makurdi/Gboko road, in an attack that by every indication is aimed to assassinate the governor.

“Our party is worried that this brazen attempt at Governor Ortom’s life is coming on the heels of his outspokenness in exposing those allegedly behind the incessant attacks of communities in the state and demanding that the Federal Government to live up to its responsibility on the protection of life and property in the state.

“The PDP fears for the life of Governor Ortom and we urge Nigerians to hold the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration responsible over its failure to take a decisive step to check the escalated insecurity and brazen attacks on innocent Nigerians.

“The PDP however calls on Governor Ortom not to be deterred by the attack but to remain courageous and at alert, at all times while providing leadership to the people of his state.

“The party also calls on the people of Benue State to be calm and vigilant while providing useful information to security agencies to flush bandits and criminal elements out of the state and other parts of the country.”

This was disclosed by the state Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Thursday December 17.

Ortom to Buhari: Declare herdsmen in Benue as terrorists now

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, Saturday told President Muhammadu Buhari to declare armed Fulani herdsmen killing innocent people in the communities of in the state as terrorists.

The governor’s call was coming after the incessant herdsmen attacks on different communities of the state in the last couple of months.

The latest of such attacks took place Friday night at Tse-Chembe community near Anyiin in Logo Local Government Area of the state, where the herders murdered seven persons in cold blood and left many others badly injured.

Ortom, who condemned the invasion and killings, described the situation as unacceptable.

He alleged “Benue State has a law which prohibits open grazing of livestock, and stresses that only a terrorist group would deliberately choose to violate the legislation as Fulani herdsmen have done since the law was enacted in 2017.”

The governor added that “declaring the armed herders operating in Benue State as terrorists will end the wave of impunity and guarantee the rule of law.”

He called on people of the state, especially those living in the affected areas to report any suspicious persons to security agencies.

Ortom commended “officers and men of Operation Whirl Stroke for their prompt responses to distress calls, particularly that of yesterday when the people of Tse-Chembe came under herdsmen’s attacks.”

He reassured Benue people that his administration would “not surrender the state to criminal elements, be they herdsmen or any other group.”

The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, said “no amount of threats and attacks will stop the enforcement of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of the state.”
