$1.2bn Brazilian Loan Will Plunge Nigeria’s Economy into Further Devastating Pitfall, PDP Tells Buhari

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised fresh alarm over the latest plans by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to “further mortgage our nation through an additional $1.2 billion loan from Brazil despite the public outcry against the accumulation of loans from China and other foreign interests.”

PDP cautioned the Buhari Presidency not to “further weaken our nation and using nebulous agricultural programmes as justification for further accumulation of foreign loans, without clear terms and conditions, to the detriment of the poor masses and generations yet unborn.”

The party further warned that “the loan request, if approved by the National Assembly, will exacerbate our nation’s debt burden, mortgage our agricultural sector, weaken our investment capacity and worsen our food security challenge.”

“Our party invites Nigerians to note that with the $1.2 billion (N459 billion) Brazilian loan, in addition to the N5.20 trillion borrowing already proposed in the 2021 budget, our nation’s debt burden will hit a disastrous N36.2 trillion which will plunge our economy into a devastating pitfall,” said the opposition party.

PDP urged the National Assembly to save the nation by being circumspect in handling the loan request in the national interest.

“Instead of this recourse to reckless borrowings,” PDP tasked “the Buhari Presidency to apply itself productively by looking inwards and finding ways to harness and create wealth with the resources abounding in our country.”

Buhari urged friends and family members to find solace in the good works of the governor’s mother, who invested heavily in fear of God, love and hard work, and ensured her children and grandchildren followed same training of diligence, discipline and charity.

The President, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, prayed God to receive the soul of the departed, and comfort the family.

Sanwo-Olu, in his condolence message, prayed God to grant the Makindes the fortitude to bear the loss.

“I commiserate with Governor Seyi Makinde on the passing to eternal life of his dear mother, Mrs Abigail Makinde.

“While I extend my condolences to the Makinde family, I pray that God grants them the grace and courage to bear the loss.

“May Mama’s soul rest eternally,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

Also, Ogun State governor has said he received the news of the death of Mama Makinde with great shock and disbelief.

Abiodun described Mama Makinde as a frank and straightforward woman who raised her children in a godly way and was a source of strength to those she came in contact with during her life time.

“Mama was a rare gem, a supportive wife, a loving mother who would stop at nothing to ensure the welfare of her children and others who crossed her path.

“She was not only a mother to her children, but mother to children sir other parents, as she did not discriminate, but treated everyone equally. She made positive impact on the lives of people in her community. I am sure she will greatly missed,” Abiodun said.

He noted that he was particularly pained by her death when preparation was on top gear for her 82nd birthday, adding that with her death, the country, Oyo State and Governor Makinde had lost a good adviser, motivator and a great counsellor.

“It is a pity that mama died at a period when her wise counseling was mostly needed not only in Oyo State, but in Nigeria.

“I sympathise with my brother, Governor Seyi Makinde. I know this is indeed a trying period for him. It is my prayer that the Almighty God will grant him the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” Abiodun said.

The governor while praying for the repose of soul of the deceased, called on Nigerians to emulate Mama Makinde who lived a life of service to humanity, saying this would imprint their names on the sand of time.

PDP National Working Committee, on behalf of the National Executive Committee and entire PDP family, had consoled Governor Makinde, over the passage of his amiable and highly revered mother.

The party said: “Our party grieves over the death of this great personality, particularly at this time Oyo state and indeed the nation at large, need her prayers, intercessions and wise counsel the most.

“Madam Makinde was a rare gem; an exceptionally resourceful, upright, straightforward and patriotic Nigerian, who sacrificially committed her life towards the good, welfare and development of others rather than herself.

“Though we deeply mourn at this point, our party draws solace from the fact that she lived a fulfilled life and bequeathed to our nation, a patriot in Governor Makinde.

“Indeed, Governor Makinde’s exceptional commitment to duty, forthrightness in governance, love for his people and Nigerians at large, all stem from the tutelage and nurturing he received from his mother.

“Our party indeed identify with Governor Makinde and the Makinde family at this moment of grief.

“We also commiserate with the government and people of Oyo state and pray God to grant us all the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, particularly given that she rests on in the bosom of her Lord and creator.”

A statement by Jagun Olubadan, Muyiwa Makinde, on behalf of the family had Thursday announced that the late matriarch slept peacefully in the Lord in the early hours of October 15.

“With total submission to the will of the Almighty God, we announce the passing to the great beyond of our mother, Mrs. Abigail Makinde, who departed this world in the early hours of today, Thursday, October 15, 2020.

PDP Flays Buhari Over Onochie’s Nomination as INEC Commissioner

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has berated President Muhammadu Buhari over the appointment of his Special Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as a national commissioner in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The opposition party described the action as a highly provocative assault on the nation’s constitution and democratic process.

PDP said: “Indeed, from Mr. President’s public promises, one would have thought that he was desirous of leaving a legacy of credible elections, having failed in all ramifications of governance.

“However, this nomination of his personal staff, Lauretta Onchie, as INEC national commissioner, supports the position of PDP that his statements were mere glib talks on electoral sanctity and clearly demonstrates that he has no plans whatsoever to leave a legacy of credible polls.

“This ugly development is another shameful attempt to plant unscrupulous elements in INEC in order to corrupt and further desecrate the sanctity of the commission, undermine our electoral system and destabilise our democratic process ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“We had hoped that, as Mr. President had professed in the past, he is truly running his second and final term in office. If that were so, then Lauretta Onochie’s nomination as INEC national commissioner clearly points to a totally different direction.

“Indeed, her nomination dresses up Mr. President as having more than an interest in legacy building and portrays him as one who has a personal candidature interest in the 2023 election. The only way to prove otherwise is to quickly withdraw Onochie’s nomination before the Senate.

“Moreover, being a card-carrying member of the APC as records shows (from Ward 5 Onicha Olona, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State), Onochie’s nomination is in clear violation of paragraph 14 of the 3rd schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which forbids a person involved in partisan politics to hold office as a member of INEC.

“It is therefore surprising that having sworn to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. President is taking actions that are antithetical to the very constitution and democratic governance.

“These actions are deliberate attempts by President Buhari to inflame social tensions, undermine our constitution and desecrate the sanctity of our electoral process, rather than finding solutions to the myriads of problems pervading our country.”

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, pointed out that it’s standing shoulder to shoulder with Nigerians.

PDP promised to deploy “every legitimate means possible in a democracy to stop the approval of this provocative nomination of Lauretta Onochie as INEC national commissioner.”

#OndoDecides2020: PDP Candidate, Jegede Expressed disappointment Over Conduct of Security Officers at Poll

Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eyitayo Jegede says he is disappointed with the conduct of some security officials deployed to monitor the Ondo governorship election.

The Governorship candidate expressed this when he addressed journalists after casting his vote in Akure on Saturday.

Eyitayo’s reservation is coming after along with his wife experienced delay in voting for about 3hrs due to difficulties in authenticating their voter’s card by polling officers at his Ward 1, Sacred Heart polling unit 9 in Gbokan/Isikan Akure South LGA.

However, the governor accused some security officers at the polling unit of allowing some people to check people’s voting preferences.

“I’m a little bit disappointed at some of the officers here. I’m disappointed because you have an officer standing directly behind the person casting his vote and you have them giving allowances to the person who should not be there giving signals to some people in their presence until I protested.

“I have had good reports about INEC and I saw good reports in Edo and I have had a lot of reports and good things happening until it came to my turn to vote and the machine suddenly malfunctioned.

“I had to be delayed and I insisted I will stay until the card functions. My wife’s card did not pass through too and we tested others who were behind me, their cards did not pass too, so all of us waited there

“After the protest, exactly ten minutes thereafter the card started functioning again. I have voted and I’m hopeful that everything will work out well,” Eyitayo said.

    • Gbajabiamila Pays Condolence Visit to Zazzau Emirate
    • Jonathan, PDP Mourn

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, Tuesday visited the Zazzau Emirate to commiserate with the family of late Emir of Zazzau, Aliyu Idris and Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Gbajabiamila was received by the Secretary to the Government of Kaduna State, Balarabe Lawal, and members of the Zazzau Emirate Council.

He described late Emir as a man of integrity who dedicated himself to the service of his people, noting that the demise of the Emir was a great loss not just to the Emirate but also to the country as a whole.

According to him, “The people of this great Emirate, let me say to you that you’re not alone on this loss. This is indeed a big loss to the people of the Emirate, the state and the country as a whole. I say a great loss because whenever you go to commiserate, you hear what a loss, what a loss, what a loss!

“But I say this with profound ‎seriousness because for those of us who have followed our late Emir, who have come to know him, knew him for whom he was: a man of integrity, dedicated to the service of his people.

“I was here some time ago, late last year, in November, when we prayed and we sat, and it was like I had known him forever.

“Perhaps, one of the most impressive things for me was the way he pronounced my name with ease. It tells you the kind of person the late Dr Shehu Idris was.

“On behalf of myself and on behalf of every single member of the House of Representatives, on behalf of 360 of us, I pay this condolence visit in my personal capacity as one of his followers and in my capacity as the Speaker.

“They have sent me here to commiserate with you. We ask that the Almighty Allah will grant him Jannatul Firdaus, that He will forgive him his sins, and that his soul will rest in perfect peace.”

The Speaker personally delivered separate condolence letters to the governor through the secretary and the Emirate council through some senior Emirate council members.

Gbajabiamila was accompanied on the condolence visit by the House Leader, Alhassan Doguwa, and some members of the House from Kaduna State.

Also, former president Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday visited Kaduna to condole with the family of late Emir of Zazzau, Shehu Idris, the Zazzau Emirate, and Kaduna State Government.

Jonathan paid a glowing tribute to late Emir, describing him as a renowned custodian of people’s custom and culture.

“The late monarch who was on the throne for almost half a century left enviable footprints in peace-building, and as a renowned custodian of his people’s custom and culture,” the former president said.

He prayed Allah to grant him Jannatul Firdaus.

In a related development, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has mourned the death of the highly revered Emir of Zazzau, describing his death as an irreparable national loss.

The party also described late Idris as an “extraordinary and exceptionally loved monarch, who served his people with utmost dedication and spent his life in the pursuit of their happiness as well as the wellbeing and peaceful coexistence of all Nigerians.”

PDP said: “The late Emir of Zazzau was a selfless leader and outstanding nationalist, who made immeasurable sacrifices in his relentless roles towards the development and stability of our dear nation, and demonstrated that the essence of statesmanship is in employing its values to the advantage of others rather than the self.

“Our party calls on the Federal Government to take steps to further immortalise the late Emir, including naming a national monument after him.”

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, commiserated with Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, and the state government; the family of the departed Emir as well as the good people of the Zazzau Emirate.
