APC Determined to Consolidate Democratic Gains – Senate President

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has said that the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) is determined to consolidate on the gains of democracy in the last two decades despite the challenges faced by the country.

Lawan stated this in a keynote address delivered at the 2020 Conference of the APC Press Corps which held in Abuja.

The Senate President, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Ola Awoniyi, however, said that the task of consolidating on the gains of democracy is a painstaking effort which requires sacrifice from leaders and patience on the part of followers.

“While we are talking about contestation therefore, we are referring to a competitive process that is not just healthy, but also reflective of a widely acceptable culture, an appreciated norm, and a predictable value system.

“Achieving this is not however a day job. It is founded on processes, growing to become beneficial, and helpful to social, and economic development.

“Nigeria has been on this steady path in the last two decades, and we will consolidate on this despite challenges.

“What we require is to be painstaking and the need to be positive about our efforts, the sacrifices of leaders, and the patience of the followers. While the leaders have a constitutional role, the followers also have to be vigilant.

“A conscientious interplay of the two will eventually result into a rewarding outcome, considering that patriotism and nationalism would emerge therefrom,” the Senate President said.

Speaking on how the ruling party has managed its internal issues, Lawan said, “the APC story is a story that is founded on fostering understanding amongst a divergent interest.

“It is the story of creativity and ingenuity in the management of difference. The APC story is a pacy story of brilliance in the administration of a plural system.

“It is a story that hallmarks how well democracy should flourish, for its adaptive capacity, and its potential as a lesson, and the possibilities it bears for the future.

“The APC story understands the workings of democracy, through its aggregation of variegated interests, and how it has managed the interests.”

On the APC’s quest to deliver good governance to Nigerians in the last five years, Lawan added, “though there are challenges but they are not always insurmountable.

“They are like the storm in the tea cup. They will always blow away, given our continued resolve to remain the vehicle for the emancipation of Nigeria. We have come a long way and will not be distracted.”

On his part, Secretary of the All Progressive Congress Caretaker/Extraordinary Planning Committee, Sen. John James Akpanudoedehe said: “Ironically, the dominant narrative or contestation is that APC led federal government is against restructuring, without awarding President Muhammadu Buhari marks or taking note of this key harbinger of restructuring.

“A lot of people often forget that democracy is not a revolution, that all the gains recorded in liberal democracy throughout history are incremental in nature.

“Accordingly, one appeals that we all support our contestation for robust State Houses of Assembly, independent State judiciary and truly elected local government council. Without which the genuine quest for restructuring will be subsumed,” Okechukwu said.

2021 Budget Presentation: Senate Reduces Buhari’s Entourage to Observe Social Distancing

The Senate on Wednesday says only officials involved in budget preparation would be allowed to accompany President Muhammadu Buhari to the National Assembly for his presentation scheduled to hold on Thursday.

This was confirmed on Wednesday by the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, who equally noted that the presentation of the 2021 national budget would take place for just one hour.

The decision of the Senate was to ensure COVID-19 measures are adhered to including social distancing.

Members of the red chamber were informed at the plenary that the 2021 budget presentation would be held in the green chamber of the House of Representatives.

‘This time around because of the situation of COVID-19 pandemic, we have made arrangements to observe social distancing in the chamber.

“We also have to wear or face masks mandatorily. We are going to also abridge the entire event because we will be many there.

“So the entire event will last just about an hour. From the entry of the President into the chamber and addresses and the presentation and laying will be just an hour event.

“This is done so that we would be able to comply with the requirements of the COvID-19 protocol.

“Mr. President this time around will not be accompanied by many people on the entourage.

“Only a few people, very key and relevant to the budget will accompany Mr. President into the chamber.

”I think by the arrangement those of them that have little to do with the budget will join virtually what will happen,” Senate President Lawan said.

Plateau: Suspected herdsmen have So Far Struck 10 Traditional Rulers Dead

Ten traditional rulers in Plateau state have so far been murdered by suspected herdsmen, the Nigerian Senate has said during Tuesday’s plenary.

As a result of the killings, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammad Adamu, to as a matter of urgency, deploy security for the protection of traditional rulers in Plateau State.

A point of order 43 raised on the matter by Senator Istifanus Gyang (PDP), representating Plateau North had instigated the urgent security call by Senate President Lawan.

While lementing the various murder of traditional rulers, Senator Gyang said: “the latest is the killing of Gwom Rwei of Foron, His Royal Highness, Da Bulus Chuwang Jang, who was assassinated at his palace last week, and the burial is due for this Friday.

“Mr. President, this trend is quite disturbing, because not less than ten other traditional rulers have unfortunately suffered death through the same circumstances.

“This development calls for the need for security to be tightened around our traditional rulers, to ensure that the increasing threat to their safety is averted.

“It is also unfortunate that just last week, five of our youths who were resting and having an evening out were brutally assassinated in Vom district, Jos South Local Government Area. All of these developments are providing increasing insecurity in my constituency.

“Plateau State and my constituency which had experienced the return of peace is suddenly again being visited with these very ugly attacks. And of course, it is common knowledge that the attackers are suspected to be killer herdsmen.

“This is very disturbing in a nation where we need to be our brother’s keeper,” Gyang said.

In his remark, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, who condoled with the Government and people of Plateau State, called on security agencies in the country to provide security for traditional rulers as well as the people of Plateau State.

“Let me on behalf of the Senate send our condolences to the Government and people of Plateau State, particularly Plateau North Senatorial district, where all of these incidents took place.

“We pray that the security agencies should provide sufficient security around traditional rulers, as well as for everybody.

“The situation requires that we continue to work together with the Executive arm of Government until we find enduring solutions to the security challenges which the country faces,” Lawan said.
