According to the Gazette, the Kano State government has officially flagged off a “Smart Transport Solution” designed to modernize mobility and enhance security within the metropolis. The initiative involves the deployment of real-time tracking technology and cameras across commercial vehicles, including tricycles, taxis, and buses.

Transport Commissioner Haruna Isa-Dederi explained that the system would capture every traveler’s data upon arrival at stations, allowing for continuous monitoring by the Police and the Ministry of Transportation. The project aims to reduce the incidence of “one-chance” robberies and kidnapping-for-ransom that often utilize unregistered commercial vehicles.

The government intends to extend the tracking requirement to private vehicles in the second phase of the rollout. This move aligns with the state’s comprehensive transport policy, which seeks to integrate technology into rail and road infrastructure to attract private-sector investment.

Validation of this story comes from Daily Post and Tribune Online, with Daily Post noting that “Kano is setting a technological benchmark for northern cities,” while Tribune quoted a transport union leader saying, “We welcome any move that makes our drivers and passengers safer.”

Echotitbits take: Kano’s pivot to surveillance-heavy transport is a double-edged sword; while it promises safety, the data privacy implications will likely become a point of contention. However, for a city of Kano’s size, this level of digital oversight is long overdue.

  • Lagos Announces Major Traffic Diversions for Eko 170 Cycling Event

Lagos Announces Major Traffic Diversions for Eko 170 Cycling Event

According to The Punch, Lagos will divert traffic for the “Eko 170” cycling race, with state transport officials outlining measures to manage road closures along the event route.

The notice underscores Lagos’ growing appetite for large-scale sports events, but it also raises concerns about commuter disruption and emergency access.

Residents typically judge these closures by signage, real-time updates, and enforcement quality—especially in already congested corridors.

TVC News also ran the diversion update as “Lagos Announces Traffic Diversions for ‘Eko 170’ Cycling Race,” while Nigeria Info described the same event as driving “major traffic diversions.”

Echotitbits take: Watch communication and compliance—route maps, live traffic updates, and rapid response units are essential to avoid gridlock backlash.

  • Adoption of Electric Vehicles in Nigeria Surges by 400% Within Five Years

Adoption of Electric Vehicles in Nigeria Surges by 400% Within Five Years

Figures cited by The Guardian Nigeria indicate a monumental shift in Nigeria’s transport sector, with electric vehicle (EV) adoption growing by 400% over the last five years. Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, revealed these statistics, linking the surge to the high cost of petroleum and new green energy incentives.

The state government is reportedly planning to expand the network of charging stations across the Lagos metropolis to support this transition. This move aligns with Nigeria’s broader commitment to reducing carbon emissions and diversifying the nation’s energy consumption patterns in urban centers.

Punch Newspaper validated the trend, reporting that ‘Nigerians are increasingly pivoting to alternative energy’ as fuel prices remain volatile. BusinessDay also noted that ‘growing sports and entertainment events are shaping youth’ to embrace modern, sustainable lifestyles including EV technology.

Echotitbits take: A 400% increase sounds impressive, but it starts from a very low base. For EVs to become mainstream, the government must fix the underlying electricity crisis; otherwise, these cars will just be expensive driveway ornaments during power outages.

According to Punch, LASTMA announced major road closures affecting Adeniji Adele, CMS and Marina routes on Lagos Island ahead of the Eyo Festival procession.

The advisory is aimed at managing crowd movement and controlling vehicle flow in one of the city’s most sensitive high-traffic corridors during a major cultural event.

Additional coverage by 36NG says the restrictions are tied to the Eyo Festival scheduled for Saturday, 27 December 2025, and notes the advisory was shared via official Lagos State channels.

Meanwhile, a related public notice circulated widely online reiterated that “Adeniji Adele, CMS, Marina routes will remain close for Eyo procession,” urging motorists to plan alternate routes.

Echotitbits take: Lagos is increasingly treating big cultural events like “security logistics operations.” The upside is fewer surprises for commuters; the downside is that last-mile businesses on the Island can take a hit. Watch for enforcement intensity on event day—and whether alternative transport and signage are sufficient to prevent gridlock spillover.

LAGBUS Suspends Service as Driver Narrates How Armed Thugs Attacked Protesters

A driver of the Bus 240-171, Mayowa Olajide, owned by Lagos State Bus Service Limited (LBSL), which was allegedly used for carrying thugs to disrupt the #EndSARS protest in Alausa, has spoken up in order to set the record straight.

Olajide, who spoke during a live briefing held on Thursday by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the State House in Marina, explained how the alleged thugs attacked the peaceful protesters.

According to him, “I took passengers from Berger Bus Stop and we were heading to Oshodi Bus Stop.

“On getting to Alausa under the bridge, there was a protest going on there. I had to stop moving the bus to allow the protesters leave the road, so that we could pass.

“After about three minutes, we saw another group of youths, whom we presumed to be protesters, disembarking from yellow minibuses. They were armed with machetes and axes. They moved towards the protesters who blocked the road and started attacking them.1

“Upon sighting the armed youths, the passengers in my bus and I became frightened. They asked me to open the doors, so that they could flee from the scene. I opened the doors; some of them ran out, while others remained in the bus. I also abandoned the bus and ran away from the scene, because I didn’t know what was going on.

“After some minutes, normalcy returned to the scene. Some of the passengers remained in the bus when I came back. Some left. We continued our journey thereafter. Nobody was injured in the bus and the bus was not destroyed by the hoodlums.”

Also speaking on the matter, Sanwo-Olu said the police had been on the trail of the hoodlums who attacked protesters in Alausa.

He reaffirmed that his administration would continue to identify with the demonstrators who conduct themselves peacefully.

The governor, therefore, directed Lagos State Police Command to ensure adequate security for citizens who respect the law and orderliness in the cause of their protest.

Meanwhile, LBSL Managing Director, Idowu Oguntona, has suspended all bus operations for the safety of passengers following the #EndSARS protest in the city.

Oguntona said the suspension was due to a viral video on social media about thugs who purportedly alighted from its bus 240-171 to attack protesters at Alausa Secretariat.

While dismissing erroneous narrative in various social media platforms, Oguntona said the bus was heading towards Oshodi from Berger around 8am when some armed individuals disembarked from a particular yellow vehicle in front of the bus at Alausa Secretariat Bus Stop.

“As part of our safety regulations, it is compulsory for all boat passengers to wear life jackets before boarding, washing of hands with water and use of sanitisers, temperature check, maintaining physical distance between clients and operating within regulated hours.

“It must also be noted that all the boats are equipped with modern technology and onboard entertainment,” he explained.

    • Borrowing for infrastructure is not bad – Lai Mohammed

Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has assured that the delay in the competition of the $1.6 billion Lagos-Ibadan rail project was not due to a challenge of fund.

According to a statement by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Transportation, Eric Ojiekwe,  Amaechi gave this explanation on Saturday during an inspection tour of the project, in company of Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed.

stating that the delay was  rather due to lack of workers on site.

Echotitbits gathered from the Ministry’s statement that the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria caused the over one billion dollar project to pause.

The minister, was however said to have tasked the contractor handling the -Ibadan Standard Gauge Rail, Messrs China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), to complete the project within five months.

The minister, who reckoned that COVID-19 had come to stay, urged the contractor to develop measures such as making personal protective equipment for their workers so as to complete the project within the stipulated time frame.

He added that safety measures such as compulsory use of masks and safety shields should be provided for the workers across the sites of the project.

Also stated was the reason why the Ibadan-Kano $5.6 billion rail was yet to commence. The minister, assuring that the project remained a priority of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration,  stated that a loan facility from China Export-Import Bank, meant to commence the project was yet to be processed by the Federal Government.

Ameachi’s co-minister in the Ministry of Information and Culture, Mohammed, commended efforts made so far on the project: “I am very impressed. This is the reason why we are borrowing the money so that Nigerians can travel in dignity and comfort”.

Reacting to public outcry over government’s borrowings over the months, Mohammed explained that monies borrowed were not for grandiose display nor for overhead or running costs for the nation but rather for capital projects which on completion would create jobs and provide needed infrastructure for Nigerians.

Mohammed added that borrowing for infrastructure and improved service delivery for the people isn’t bad.

While also urging the contractor, CCECC not to disappoint on the project, Mohammed commended Amaechi for driving the project with passion.

The route was designed with 11 pedestrian bridges, traffic safety measures and street lighting.

Sanwo-Olu rode in a BRT bus to formally flag off the 13.68 kilometre-long corridor for public use.

The Oshodi-Abule Egba corridor is a major link for residents who commute in and out of Alimosho, Egbeda, Ijaiye, Iyana Ipaja and Oshodi. The route is also a gateway to neighbouring Ogun State and Republic of Benin.

Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu described the commissioning ceremony as “a major milestone” in the implementation of his administration’s reform agenda in public transport system, pointing out that the handover of the BRT infrastructure was another promise fulfilled by his administration.

He said the transportation asset would create a new travel experience for residents of Alimosho and Oshodi, noting that the project was specifically designed to improve journey time for commuters, thereby scaling up productivity and life expectancy in the state.

According to him, “A little over a year ago, we pledged to significantly improve traffic flow and transportation system which is the very first of our six-point development agenda encapsulated as Project T.H.E.M.E.S. We made the pledge knowing that the people are the main reason we have been entrusted with the management of our commonwealth.

“Today, we are here to formally flag-off a very important public transport infrastructure – the Oshodi-Abule Egba BRT corridor – which officially launches the commencement of transport operation along the BRT corridor.

“We are unveiling 550 high and medium capacity buses which will be immediately deployed for public use. This event also formally inaugurates our upgraded e-ticketing system in fulfilment of our pledge.

“This project is very significant because of its immense benefits to Lagosians in the different communities it straddles and to visitors to our state. This new BRT corridor will bring great relief to over 60,000 commuters who will use this facility daily.

“Travel time, which is estimated at an average of two hours during peak periods, will be significantly reduced to an average of 30 minutes. This will improve the health of our people, engender a safer environment, and increase the value of socio-economic activities in the state.”

The governor added that his administration’s reform efforts were geared towards birthing a new commuting order in the state through seamless travel and creating smart mobility model that’ll result into a congestion-free state.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bringing problem-solving interventions across all modes of transportation sector in Lagos.

To integrate all transport modes on a single smart payment ecosystem, Sanwo-Olu launched an upgraded e-ticketing platform that would automate fare payment and create smart mobility through a cashless pre-paid Cowry card.

The e-ticketing mechanism has modern functionalities which simplify the process of bus booking and ticket purchase. It introduces simple solutions that guarantee seamless cash and wireless payment for passengers at designated booths.

The Cowry card would enable passengers proceed to the loading bay and scan the card for fare deduction.

“With the e-ticketing system, we envisage the use of a single card on buses and ferries and later upscale to the railways system when passenger operations commence in 2022.

“The system promotes a cashless ecosystem, aids personal budgeting and planning and commuters can easily top up,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor disclosed that the state government would be distributing the first 100,000 Cowry cards to residents free of charge.

Sanwo-Olu added that his administration was on the verge of complementing Oshodi-Abule Egba BRT corridor with rail project to aid mass mobility.

The BRT project was handled and supervised by Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) – an agency of the state’s Ministry of Transportation.

The governor hailed LAMATA for supervising the project construction and bringing it to reality, while also thanking President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting the state government in its drive to deliver efficient transport system.

“Our administration is very passionate about easing the movement of the citizenry around this beautiful state which is why we would not stop at ensuring that we give you a transport system that works for you.

“I would like to congratulate Lagosians on the successful completion of this project in spite of the challenges thrown up by its implementation. I would also like to commend Lagosians for the pains they had to endure while the construction of this important transport project lasted,” he said.

In his remarks, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Frederic Oladehinde, described the project as “great progress” in the public transport system, noting that the BRT route was important to the state’s strategic transportation master plan.

LAMATA Managing Director, Abimbola Akinajo, on her part, said the commencement of the BRT operations along the corridor would reduce travel time for commuters by 35 per cent, while also enhancing socio-economic development.
