According to Leadership, the Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with technology firm Seamfix Limited and the Cooperative Federation of Nigeria (CFN), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch the National Cooperative Smart Registry (NCSR). The landmark agreement aims to digitize and formalize records across the country’s sprawling cooperative sector.
The new digital infrastructure introduces the Cooperative Verification Number (CVN) for societies and the Cooperative Member Identification Number (CoopID) for individuals. Crucially, the CoopID will be directly linked to each member’s verified National Identification Number (NIN), eliminating manual, paper-based membership tracking and reducing identity fraud within informal financing networks.
By bringing transparency and verifiable data to millions of cooperative members, the initiative is designed to integrate rural micro-finance, agricultural collectives, and trade unions into the formal financial ecosystem. The system will enable targeted government interventions and social safety net programs to reach genuine beneficiaries more efficiently.
