Reporting by ThisDay indicates that the Office of the Tax Ombudsman has initiated a nationwide stakeholder engagement drive to foster collaboration among revenue-generating agencies and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s tax system. Speaking at a high-level summit in Abuja, official representatives stressed that revenue collection must be balanced with fairness and transparency.

The Tax Ombudsman disclosed that operational tools, including a centralized complaint portal, a dedicated contact center, and a digital case management system, have been fully launched to allow citizens and corporate entities to lodge grievances over arbitrary levies and excessive tax assessments. Plans are also underway to establish regional offices to decentralize dispute resolution services.

Furthermore, revenue authorities announced the upcoming launch of the Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights and Obligations. The charter will outline the fundamental protections guaranteed to taxpayers while setting clear service standards for federal, state, and local revenue agencies across the federation.

Voice of Nigeria echoed the initiative, quoting officials who noted that “the power to collect revenue must be matched by a strong commitment to fairness, accountability and access to redress.” Additionally, Daily Post reported that “corporate registries and tax authorities are working to integrate data systems to streamline taxpayer identification and eliminate arbitrary enforcement.”

Echotitbits take:

As the Nigerian government ramps up domestic revenue mobilization to meet budget targets, establishing a trustworthy tax dispute mechanism is essential. Protecting taxpayers from arbitrary harassment will encourage voluntary tax compliance, drive corporate registration, and improve the overall ease of doing business.
