The Nigerian government has resumed its emergency voluntary evacuation program to repatriate hundreds of its nationals from South Africa following imminent security threats. In an update published by Vanguard, an Air Peace aircraft deployed by the federal government departed Nigeria on Monday and successfully returned with 271 stranded Nigerians to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Tuesday morning. The emergency operation was prioritized to ensure the safety of citizens ahead of widespread anti-immigrant protests scheduled by local vigilante groups.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that over 700 citizens had registered for repatriation following tension over a self-declared June 30 deadline issued by South African anti-immigration groups demanding that undocumented foreign nationals leave the country. Although funds were approved by President Bola Tinubu earlier in the month, administrative bottlenecks initially delayed the deployment of flights, leaving many anxious and stranded in volatile regional clusters.
The Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, advised Nigerians who chose to remain in South Africa despite the high-stakes protests to maintain extreme caution, avoid routes dominated by demonstrators, and stay in constant communication with the Nigerian High Commission. Prior to this flight, the government had successfully brought home 328 citizens in two previous phases of the emergency intervention.
