In an update published by Premium Times, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a heightened public health alert after recorded cholera cases crossed 65,000 across 35 states and 195 local government areas in 2026. Despite weekly infection rates slowing down from earlier peaks, health officials warn that active transmission remains a critical threat.
Director General of the NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris, highlighted that the ongoing rainy season significantly heightens transmission risks due to localized flooding contaminating unprotected water sources and overloading municipal sanitation systems. The epicenter of the outbreak remains heavily concentrated in Borno State, though case fatality rates have improved where emergency medical interventions were deployed promptly.
To curtail further spread, the agency is coordinating oral cholera vaccination campaigns alongside water chlorination initiatives in vulnerable communities. However, health authorities emphasize that long-term control depends on subnational governments fixing broken water infrastructure and eliminating open defecation.
