Buhari said: “Your election is a significant reminder that democracy is the best form of government because it offers the people the opportunity to change their government by peaceful means.

“The most powerful group are not the politicians, but voters who can decide the fate of the politicians at the polling booth.

“The main fascination of democracy is the freedom of choice and the supremacy of the will of the people.”

“Respect for the will of the people is the very reason why democracy remains the best form of government, despite its limitations from one polity to another, and from one society to another.”

“I am thrilled by the fact that you are an experienced politician who had served as Congressman for 40 years and a Vice President for eight years. This is a remarkable track record that gives us hope that you will add value to the presidency and world affairs.”

Buhari also noted that “with your election, we look forward to greater cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, especially at economic, diplomatic and political levels, including the war against terrorism.”

On international affairs, Nigerian President urged Mr. Biden to “deploy your vast experience in tackling the negative consequences of nationalist politics on world affairs which have created divisions, conflicts and uncertainties.”

The Nigerian leader also called on Biden “to introduce greater engagement with Africa on the basis of reciprocal respects and shared interests.”

Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose 2019 call with President Donald Trump sparked impeachment investigations, took to Twitter to congratulate President-elect and his running-mate, Kamala Harris.

According to him, “Congratulations to @JoeBiden @KamalaHarris! #Ukraine is optimistic about the future of the strategic partnership with the #UnitedStates. 🇺🇦 and 🇺🇸 have always collaborated on security, trade, investment, democracy, fight against corruption. Our friendship becomes only stronger!”

Also, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa said: “We congratulate President-elect @JoeBiden and Vice President @KamalaHarris and the American people on your election. We look forward to working with you and deepening our bonds of friendship and cooperation.”

On his part, President George Weah of Liberia said: “Congratulations to U.S.President-elect Joe Biden on his historic win. He assumes the leadership of the United States at a very challenging time for the country and the world as we all face a global health crisis. I urge all Americans to forge together in peace and unity.

“As the traditional ally of the United States, Liberia stands ready to further enhance and rekindle our long, historic and unique bilateral relations.
    Congratulations!”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in a statement, described Biden-Harris’ victory as historic.

“Today marks the dawning of a new day of hope for America. A record-shattering 75 million Americans cast their ballots to elect Joe Biden President of the United States – a historic victory that has handed Democrats a mandate for action.

“In President-elect Joe Biden, Americans elected a leader ready on Day One to finally begin to crush the coronavirus so we can safely reopen our economy and schools. In President-elect Biden, the American people delivered a mandate for lower health costs, a mandate for creating bigger paychecks by rebuilding America’s infrastructure, and a mandate for cleaner government that works for the public interest, not the special interests. And in President-elect Biden, they have elected a unifier who values faith, family and community, and who will work tirelessly to heal our nation.

“President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris won with a strong margin, and they will have a strong Democratic House Majority by their side. Working together, we have the opportunity to deliver extraordinary progress For The People,” Pelosi said.

A former British Prime Minister Theresa May also wrote: “Congratulations @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris. Your election marks a new chapter in the history of your country and in the special partnership between our two nations. #democracy The UK & US will always work together to defend our shared values.”

Also commenting on the election, a former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said: “The voters have spoken, and they have chosen @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris to be our next president and vice president.

“It’s a history-making ticket, a repudiation of Trump, and a new page for America.

“Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen. Onward, together.”

A former deputy governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kingsley Moghalu, also wrote: “Congratulations to @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris !

“@JoeBiden is the 46th President of the United States! This is the will of the American people. Real democracies respect the will of the people and the institutions that uphold that will. Anyone else’s opinion is irrelevant now. Americans themselves have spoken.

“In a democracy, no one should be bigger than the voters. America has held elections for 200 years. The Democrats were crushed when @HillaryClinton lost in 2016 and @realDonaldTrump won, but they accepted it. Now that Trump has lost and @JoeBiden won, the same must happen.

“If Trump had won, would the election have been “rigged” and ballots sweepingly described as “illegal”? The whole world is watching the planet’s most powerful country. If this is happening there, what moral standing would it have to censure others on democracy?

“The votes have spoken and, although Trump has the right to go to court, his effort should be channeled in a more professional and responsible manner, not wholesale denunciation of a system that WORKS and always has.”

Commenting about the election process that has been described as emotionally exhaustimg, ex-President Obama said: “In this election, under circumstances never experienced, Americans turned out in numbers never seen. And once every vote is counted, President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris will have won a historic and decisive victory”.

Obama expressed confidence about the the competence of his erstwhile Vice President in changing the economic trajectory of a nation that is widely divided at the moment.

“We’re fortunate that Joe’s got what it takes to be President and already carries himself that way. Because when he walks into the White House in January, he’ll face a series of extraordinary challenges no incoming President ever has – a raging pandemic, an unequal economy and justice system, a democracy at risk, and a climate in peril.

“I know he’ll do the job with the best interests of every American at heart, whether or not he had their vote. So I encourage every American to give him a chance and lend him your support. The election results at every level show that the country remains deeply and bitterly divided. It will be up to not just Joe and Kamala, but each of us, to do our part – to reach out beyond our comfort zone, to listen to others, to lower the temperature and find some common ground from which to move forward, all of us remembering that we are one nation, under God.

“Finally, I want to thank everyone who worked, organized, and volunteered for the Biden campaign, every American who got involved in their own way, and everybody who voted for the first time. Your efforts made a difference. Enjoy this moment. Then stay engaged. I know it can be exhausting. But for this democracy to endure, it requires our active citizenship and sustained focus on the issues – not just in an election season, but all the days in between.”

In the last 3 days, analysts and public commentators have condemned President Trump’s inflammatory comments one of which was his unproven claims of wide spread fraud in an election that is now judged unprecedented in terms of numbers of voters.

$1.2bn Brazilian Loan Will Plunge Nigeria’s Economy into Further Devastating Pitfall, PDP Tells Buhari

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised fresh alarm over the latest plans by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to “further mortgage our nation through an additional $1.2 billion loan from Brazil despite the public outcry against the accumulation of loans from China and other foreign interests.”

PDP cautioned the Buhari Presidency not to “further weaken our nation and using nebulous agricultural programmes as justification for further accumulation of foreign loans, without clear terms and conditions, to the detriment of the poor masses and generations yet unborn.”

The party further warned that “the loan request, if approved by the National Assembly, will exacerbate our nation’s debt burden, mortgage our agricultural sector, weaken our investment capacity and worsen our food security challenge.”

“Our party invites Nigerians to note that with the $1.2 billion (N459 billion) Brazilian loan, in addition to the N5.20 trillion borrowing already proposed in the 2021 budget, our nation’s debt burden will hit a disastrous N36.2 trillion which will plunge our economy into a devastating pitfall,” said the opposition party.

PDP urged the National Assembly to save the nation by being circumspect in handling the loan request in the national interest.

“Instead of this recourse to reckless borrowings,” PDP tasked “the Buhari Presidency to apply itself productively by looking inwards and finding ways to harness and create wealth with the resources abounding in our country.”

#EndSARSProtests: El-Rufai Defends Sanwo-Olu, Describes Destruction of Lagos Assets as Pure Evil

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Thursday defended his counterpart in Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, saying the First Family in the Centre of Excellence did all needed to be done to prevent the recent youth protest against police brutality from degenerating into violence.

El-Rufai, who described the gravity of the destruction as “pure evil,” said he nearly shed tears as he flicked through the images of the torched Lagos assets. He said the young people who carried out the violence intentionally engaged in an act of “self-destruction,” noting that the repercussion of the action would also be felt by them.

Kaduna State governor said Lagos, which accounts for one-third of national GDP, did not deserve to suffer such pain.

Sharing his thoughts when he visited the State House in Marina to commiserate with Sanwo-Olu over the coordinated arson sparked by the #EndSARS protest, El-Rufai said those who thrive in violence infiltrated the protest to achieve their agenda of wreaking a large-scale destruction on public assets and infrastructure in Lagos.

According to him, “I have spent time to see some of the pictures of the destruction done on public properties in Lagos and I nearly shed tears. Anyone who cares about development and progress will cry after seeing what has been done to public facilities and people’s investment that provided jobs to youths.

“While expressing anger on police brutality may be right, but destroying public properties, which will have to be rebuilt using money that is needed to invest in other public infrastructure, under the guise of protest is nothing but self-destruction. The Government of Lagos State and the Federal Government will have to re-invest scarce resources that could have been used for other things to rebuild the vandalised facilities.

“As a colleague, I can confirm that governor of Lagos State did all that could be done to ensure that this destruction does not take place. It is very sad to see what had happened in Lagos. I want to assure you that we will support you getting Lagos back on track. We will do whatever support Lagos needs from us to get back better.”

El-Rufai, who said the youth protest against the police was not out of order, said it was wrong for the protesters to call for disbandment of the entire Nigeria Police Force because of the action of a few bad eggs.

He sympathised with the police and those who lost loved ones in Lagos in the wake of the violence, saying the Federal Government must not allow wanton destruction of public assets to happen again.

In his remarks, Sanwo-Olu said although Lagos State had started to look forward and engage in new partnerships towards restoring the lost assets, he vowed to make the state uncomfortable for those with the intention to destroy the state’s economy and heritage.

Despite the ugly incident that trailed the protest, Sanwo-Olu said his administration remained committed to getting justice for those who were brutalised by the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) team of the police.

He thanked El-Rufai for the extension of support towards rebuilding Lagos State, welcoming all forms of assistance that could be rendered to keep the nation’s commercial nerve centre flourishing for businesses.

Sanwo-Olu, who intimated his Kaduna counterpart of steps already taken to rebuild Lagos, said his administration was doing it could to support those whose businesses were destroyed and create ambience for commercial activities to get back stronger.

Meanwhile, Sanwo-Olu same Thursday charged other governors in Nigeria to look into their expenditure profile and do away with unnecessary spending to increase their states’ revenue in order to have more resources to meet the basic needs of the people.

Speaking at the 22nd Annual Tax Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) held at Eko Hotel in Victoria Island, Sanwo-Olu noted the need for better utilisation of tax payers’ money by public office holders to build the trust of the citizens, adding that state executives must work toward having a better reform process.

The governor, who disclosed that he’s yet to use state resources to purchase any vehicle for himself since he assumed office as governor on May 29, 2019, said it’s not necessarily fanciful that governors must buy brand new vehicles when there’s no need for them.

“We need to look at our expenditure profile as Chief Executive of our state and ask ourselves, where can I cut the red tape; what can I do away with so as to increase the revenue of my state or even make available more money for my state.

“What I have done till date is that I have not purchased any single official vehicle for myself, for any of my personal staff or any of my family members from the government purse. If you see me have a convoy of 10 vehicles, these are all vehicles I was using during my campaigns.

“Governor Nasir el-Rufai joined me in one of my cars this morning and I can tell you that vehicle was one of the vehicles I used for my campaign; it is not brand new.

“So, I said to my people that, it is not a fanciful thing that every governor must begin to buy brand new vehicles when you do not need to. So, all of those millions have gone back into the treasury of the state and we are using it to develop the state very well,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor, who noted the need to increase revenue generation without totally dependent on revenue from oil, charged tax practitioners, especially members of CITN, to take leadership position and put themselves in rightful position in Nigeria to increase government revenue and change the narrative in the country.

Also speaking at the event, El-Rufai commended Sanwo-Olu’s leadership in managing the affairs of the state and his effort to rebuild Lagos after the massive destruction that marred the peaceful protests organised by the youth recently.

He said: “Whatever happens in Lagos concerns everybody because it is the economic hub of the country, while Kaduna State is the political hub. I can assure you that all the 35 governors will support your rebuilding Lagos project.”

El-Rufai, who disclosed that Nigeria is not collecting more revenue as it should collect, said Kaduna State has learned a lot from Lagos State in term of economic development and internal revenue generation (IGR), which has helped his state to reform its tax generation.

In her address, CITN President, Gladys Simplice, urged the executive arm of government to ensure that government economic policies in generating revenue are matched with tax reforms that encourage growth through executive orders and sponsorship of legislative bills capable of promoting entrepreneurship development.

She also advised the National Assembly to address the nature of the Value Added Tax (VAT) by including more items under the exemption list and giving clarity to existing ones.

  • Opinion: Looting The “Looters”

    Opinion: Looting The “Looters”

    By Dapo Akande

Still on the Lekki Massacre, the Nigerian Army quickly denied it was anywhere near where the tragic incident took place. When it became obvious that narrative was no longer tenable, it admitted it was there after all, but only on the behest of the Lagos State government. Next, it vehemently denied shooting at the unarmed youths only for it to capitulate again and say it did shoot but only used rubber bullets. The Lagos State Governor on the other hand denies he invited the army. Reminiscent of Pontius Pilate, he too publicly washed his hands by saying the murderous acts were carried out by forces beyond his control. Thankfully, he at least admitted he was aware of two protesters who lost their lives. So which one is it? Everyone seems to be changing his story as often as a chameleon changes it’s colours. As I cast my mind back, I remember vividly as if it was yesterday, my dear parents (God bless their souls) telling me that truth remains constant. Always. I’ve come to learn they were right.

The Nigerian state has by it’s own body language and sometimes overt conduct, remained at the vanguard of insincere behaviour and many of our people have taken a cue from this; to the detriment of everybody including the state itself. In 1985 our country “won” the Under 17 FIFA World Cup, fielding men already in their early and mid twenties and we all celebrated our astonishing victory even when we all knew the shenanigans that had gone on.

There was a time too, several decades ago, when a European football club boasted of a superbly talented Nigerian player they had discovered. They had high hopes of this young sensation. They just couldn’t disguise their excitement and were already dreaming of what this prodigious talent would grow up to become in the future. The only little thing they needed to work on was his diminutive size which needed to be robust enough to cope with the physicality of the beautiful game played at that level. So, they drew up a special diet for him to achieve this goal. After several months, they were confounded by the results they were seeing. Instead of becoming bigger and stronger, his stomach began to protrude. They couldn’t understand it. Little did they know baba’s midrib bulge was just the beginning of a middle age pouch because of all the extra food they were pumping into him. The man became sluggish and could barely carry himself around the pitch. His rise to football stardom ended as abruptly as it began. In the end, deceit didn’t pay.

I find it a little hypocritical for me to lecture my children and other people’s children too, when invited to speak about the evils of cheating. How do I reconcile that with boasting about our Junior World Cup victories when I’m in the know of what actually transpired? We must be careful about the things we espouse because once the majority support it, it automatically alters our collective moral code.

Cultural Relativism, as an ethical theory describes morality as behaviour accepted as good conduct by the majority of people in that society; which means moral values will naturally differ across cultural divides. A good example could be how most Western countries have evolved their moral code over the years to accept same sex relationships as okay, to the point where many have enshrined it in their laws. Abortion laws too vary from country to country, often influenced by the views of the majority in that particular society. This is not a discourse on those issues but an attempt to illustrate how a society’s moral code is often determined by what the majority consider to be acceptable.

If a large section of the Nigerian populace continues to implicitly encourage lying and cheating as a way of life, then it could soon permeate (if it hasn’t already) to the point where it not only becomes the social norm but is no longer even considered immoral. You may think you’re clever by passively supporting it when it pays you but then a day will come when it won’t.

Returning to the football Junior World Cup victories; at the end of the day, did we really win? The nation may have earned a World Cup title and basked in the euphoria of hoisting up the winner’s trophy but in the process, our society lost more than it gained. Of course, our reputation suffered when we eventually got found out but we still lost more than that. The institutional fraud and the people’s failure to call it out only succeeded in lowering our collective moral standard. In our haste to celebrate a clearly fraudulent victory, our values began to evolve; no longer clearly defined and settled, they became confused and somewhat nebulous, changing from one instance to another.

Our perception of right and wrong would typically depend on who the agent or beneficiary is. Winning at all cost became the name of the game and this quietly seeped into our culture. “All’s fair in love and war” seems to have become the unwritten motto. It’s unfortunate because like so many things in life, once you get a taste of it and it tastes good, it becomes difficult to stop hence the admonition to run from anything that appears evil. Evil is seldom ugly on the outside. If it is, everyone would scamper. No, it’s beautiful and enticing much like the forbidden fruit.

Jonathan Schulz, an experimental economist at Yale University co-authored a study which examined the theory that in societies where high level institutional corruption and fraudulent conduct persists, the citizens will likely toe the same path. His discovery was that, “what individuals justify as honest seems to vary according to their environment”. Schulz went on to say, “It seems that people benchmark their dishonesty with what they’re surrounded by in their daily life”. Labelling this, ‘justified cheating”, this may help us to understand why many of us, just like those who looted the homes of perceived looters, bend the rules at times and feel justified in doing so because we live in an environment where everyone else seems to be doing same. Having witnessed how an averagely well off government official became a multi billionaire overnight, coupled with the constant barrage of nauseating stories of executive looting, it’s not too hard to see how the hungry and angry man may have justified his actions in his mind. He merely benchmarked it against institutional behaviour and saw little wrong in looting the “looters”. What a shame.

Changing the nation…one mind at a time.

ICC Opens Inquiry into Nigeria #EndSARS Protests

International Criminal Court (ICC) has told BBC that it would “analyse materials” it has received about the violence which hit Nigeria last month following protests against police brutality.

ICC chief prosecutor’s office said contrary to an earlier report, it has not already opened a “formal preliminary examination” into the unrest.

ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda & Vice President of Nigeria, H.E. Yemi Osinbajo in Abuja, Monday, October 14, 2019.

For weeks crowds of peaceful protesters gathered in streets in major cities of Nigeria to demonstrate against police brutality.

The protests were held under the #EndSARS banner, a reference to demands for the disbandment of the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad, whose officers were repeatedly accused of criminal activity ranging from extortion to extra-judicial killings.

It led to a crackdown, with security forces and armed thugs accused of killing protesters.

Some 51 civilians, 11 police officers and seven soldiers were killed in the unrest, according to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Rights group, Amnesty International, said security forces opened fire on protesters at Lekki toll gate in the commercial hub of Lagos, killing 10 people there.

The military and police rejected Amnesty’s allegation.

#EndSARSProtests: Osinbajo’s NEC Embarks on Youth Engagement at Zonal and State Levels

In furtherance of the resolution of an emergency meeting of the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo-led National Economic Council (NEC) last week, the Ad-Hoc Committee set up to engage with youths, civil society organisations, and different strands of leadership across the nation in the wake of the recent protests have swung into action.

At a meeting presided over by Osinbajo on Tuesday, the committee decided to promptly embark on a two-pronged engagement process: zonal and state-based respectively.

For the state-based engagements, each of the 36 governors and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister would meet with the leadership and representatives of the identified groups.

This would then be immediately followed by zonal interactions where Osinbajo and members of the committee would feature.

The engagements would not only include youth groups but also traditional, religious and political leaders. Civil society groups would also be involved as well as opinion moulders like the media.

The interactions would feature issues around employment, social safety nets and national unity and security of lives and properties, among others.

Tuesday’s meeting, which was attended virtually by all governors representing each of the six geopolitical zones in the country, also formally adopted some terms of reference.

    These include: “To engage representatives of youths, cvil society organisations and others, political, religious and traditional leaders on employment and social safety net programmes among other issues;

    “To engage with the security agencies and develop ways of delivering more control to governors who are the Chief Security Officers of their states;

    “To recommend effective solutions to the rising divisiveness and propose ways of strengthening national unity;

“To develop a framework for the coordination of action steps to be taken by both the federal and state governments in response to the fundamental issues underlying the #EndSARS protests.

“To co-opt and or invite any individual or corporate body that may facilitate the work of the committee; and

“Report to council with such recommendations as may be considered appropriate.”

It would be recalled that last Thursday after more than four hours of deliberations at NEC emergency meeting, it was resolved that the deeper reasons behind the #EndSARS protests and its fallout should be addressed by both the federal and state governments.

Members of NEC Adhoc Committee on Public Engagements all of whom attended today’s meeting are: Osinbajo – Chairman; Governors Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State representing North-west; Babagana Zulum of Borno State representing North-east; Abubakar Bello of Niger State representing North-central; Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State representing South-west; Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State representing South-east; and Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State representing South-south.
