  • Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde Reveals She Almost Quitted Acting for Music

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde Reveals She Almost Quitted Acting for Music

In a post shared by Olori Supergal, veteran Nollywood icon Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde made a shocking career confession, revealing that she nearly walked away from her acting career to pursue music full-time. The actress, known globally as “Omosexy,” reflected on her early transitions and the pressures she faced during the height of her Nollywood fame.

Omotola, who released several music projects in the mid-2000s, explained that her passion for singing often felt at odds with the demands of the film industry. She credited her eventual decision to stay in acting to the support of her family and the realization that she could use her platform to influence social change, particularly during the EndSARS movement.

The revelation has reignited discussions about the “double-threat” nature of Nigerian entertainers. While many actors have attempted to cross over into music, few have achieved the level of success Omotola saw in her primary field. Her confession serves as a retrospective on the evolution of the Nigerian entertainment landscape.

Currently, Omotola is focused on her role as a social activist and mentor to the next generation of African filmmakers. She recently made headlines for her comments on the need for leadership in Nigeria that is willing to sacrifice for the nation’s progress.

    * Daily Post Nigeria reported on her recent social commentary: “Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde disclosed how her children faced death threats during EndSARS.”

    * Legit.ng added: “The veteran actress’s career confession has surprised many who saw her as the ‘Queen of Nollywood’.”

Echotitbits take: Omotola’s “almost” move to music is a classic Nollywood “What If.” While her music career became a meme for some, her desire to pivot shows the creative restlessness of true legends. Her focus on activism now suggests she’s found a “voice” more powerful than any studio recording.

  • Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde Reveals Death Threats During EndSARS Protests

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde Reveals Death Threats During EndSARS Protests

In a report by The Punch, Nollywood veteran Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has opened up about the harrowing experience her family faced during the #EndSARS protests. The actress revealed that her children received death threats, which prompted her to be more cautious about her public political stances in recent years.

According to Omotola, the period was one of extreme anxiety, as her vocal support for better governance made her family a target for online and offline harassment. She emphasized that while she remains committed to a better Nigeria, the safety of her children remains her primary concern.

This revelation comes as a response to recent criticisms of celebrities who have stayed silent during recent economic hardships. Omotola urged Nigerians to seek leaders who are selfless and willing to “die for the cause,” while acknowledging the personal cost of activism.

    * The Cable Lifestyle: “Omotola: My kids got death threats during #EndSARS. We need leaders who are selfless.”

    * Daily Nigerian: “Rapper Falz and Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde urge leaders and citizens to take responsibility for Nigeria’s future.”

Echotitbits Take: This admission sheds light on the “invisible” pressure Nigerian celebrities face when engaging in politics. While the public demands they use their platforms, the security risks are often ignored. Omotola’s story serves as a reminder that the digital space in Nigeria can be as dangerous as the physical one for high-profile activists.

    #EndSARS: Nigeria Appeases UK Government

Afraid of being sanctioned by the United Kingdom Government over the handling of the #EndSARS protests which turned bloody in Nigeria, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government has moved to placate the British government to present its own side of the story.

The Federal Government’s latest position was coming as the United Kingdom Parliament passed a resolution calling for an imposition of sanctions on some Nigerian officials over their role in the “violent suppression” of the protests.

But, briefing State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja in Thursday, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said though British legislators may not be legally binding to impose sanctions, Nigerian Government would use the opportunity to clear air on some grey areas over the #EndSARSProtestsTurnedBloody in the country.

According to him, “The UK Government has been briefed. There was a UK parliamentarian meeting and the UK Government, which acts for the United Kingdom, has also heard the side of the (Nigerian) government regarding everything that has happened.

“So, we have been in touch with them and engaging them. As in every democracy, members of parliament are also able to air their views.

“What is important is that a balanced picture is made available to them before they take any decision.”

#EndSARS: Osinbajo, Gbajabiamila, Sanwo-Olu, Others Move to Rebuild Lagos Infrastructure

It’s a gathering of prominent people from all walks of life as the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led Lagos State Government formally inaugurated an eight-man team led by the Chairman of Citibank Nigeria, Yemi Cardoso, at an event tagged “Consultative Forum on Rebuilding Lagos” held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa.

The forum was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele; Senator representing Lagos West, Solomon Adeola; Chief Judge of Lagos, Kazeem Alogba; and President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, represented by the group’s Executive Director, Mansur Ahmed.

Also, captains of industry, members of organised private sector and members of diplomatic corps graced the event aimed at restoring the infrastructure destroyed in the wake of violence that trailed the #EndSARS protests.

Speaking at the event, Osinbajo described Lagos as a critical federating unit around which Nigeria’s fortune is tied.

He said as a city with flourishing economy, Lagos deserved the support of both the government and private sector to heal, noting that the task of reconstructing the destroyed assets would be painful and costly.

Osinbajo charged the rebuilding committee, which was announced fortnight ago, not to be discouraged by the enormity of the task before them, while also urging them to pursue the rebuilding process with an objective to restore trust between the government and citizens.

The vice president pledged President Muhammadu Buhari’s support for the Lagos State-led recovery effort, but said the presidency still awaits the full report of Lagos destruction in order to know the level of support required from the Federal Government.

According to him, “On behalf of the Federal Government, let me assure you that we stand with the great people of Lagos as you undertake this difficult journey of rebuilding the lost assets. It my conviction that Lagos and the nation at large will emerge from this crisis better and stronger.”

Also speaking at the event, Gbajabiamila said the level of destruction was heartbreaking and the loss on hardworking people was monumental, praising Sanwo-Olu for his doggedness and courage to lift the spirit of Lagos State in the face of devastation.

The Speaker said the effort to restore Lagos would go beyond budget, adding: “It requires special intervention from the Federal Government.”

In his remarks, Sanwo-Olu described the proportion of the devastation suffered by Lagos State as unprecedented, saying the coordinated violence set Lagos economy, the fifth largest in Africa, back by hundreds of billions of Naira.

The destruction, the governor said, tore down the fortress of Lagos commerce built over centuries ago, adding that those who carried out the violence made an attempt to ruin values that stood the state out as centre of creativity and innovation in the country.

Sanwo-Olu said the consultative forum was to set the stage for the necessary public-private partnerships and collaborations required for the task of rebuilding and restoration of the infrastructure that was destroyed.

He said: “The violence we witnessed last October is the most widespread carnage the state has seen in decades. Every aspect of life and livelihood in Lagos was affected – government buildings, offices, public monuments and historical archives, public infrastructure and very sadly too, private property and investments.

“The violence has, no doubt, set our economy back by hundreds of billions of Naira, and impacted our confidence.

“We have, however, found hope and great strength in the offers of assistance from far and wide, which culminated in the constitution of the Lagos Rebuild Committee to coordinate our efforts to rebuild and upgrade our state.

“We seek to restore the infrastructure that was destroyed, to revive the energy and confidence of everyone who has been affected by these losses, to help restore the confidence of the people of Lagos in the infinite potentials of Lagos. Lagos State Government cannot do this alone. We need all the help that we can get.”

The governor disclosed that his administration would be setting aside a huge amount of money as the state’s collateral in the recovery effort, adding that the Cardoso-led team that would be coordinating the Trust Fund would be given legislative backing through an Executive Bill that would soon be transmitted to Lagos State House of Assembly.

He promised that money that would be donated into the Trust Fund would go into rebuilding and re-tooling security infrastructure, strengthening public transportation systems, restoring judicial and local government operations, rebuilding damaged public monuments.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised that transparency and accountability would be foundational elements in the implementation of the mandate of the rebuilding committee, noting that the fund-raising and disbursement would be supervised by FBN Trustees Limited.

Emefiele, on his part, said the unrest impacted greatly on the national economy, adding that Lagos particularly must sustain the recovery effort to protect its economy from catastrophic consequences.

Given the magnitude of losses and devastation that trailed the unrest, the CBN governor disclosed that Bankers’ Committee and key stakeholders in the private sector would be unveiling a recovery blueprint next week to support all households and businesses affected by the crisis.

The intervention being delivered under Coalition Against COVID-19 (Ca-COVID) Alliance would lead to an effort of rebuilding all the razed police stations and a five-year plan to generate millions of job for the youth.

“I am pleased to note that the Ca-COVID Alliance will, over the next week, be unveiling a blueprint that will provide details of our planned support that positively affect households and businesses. This is in addition to measures that will create millions of jobs for our youths over the next five years. Many parts of the country were affected by the unrest, but Lagos remains the worst hit.

“The Ca-COVID Alliance is fully aware of the vital relationship between security and a prosperous economy. The damage done on police stations in different parts of the country can undermine provision of adequate security, which is vital to households and businesses.

“The Ca-COVID Alliance is committed to the rebuilding and rehabilitation of all the 44 police stations destroyed in the unrest. More than half of the police stations are in Lagos; funds will be provided to rebuild these stations,” Emefiele said.

He added that Bankers’ Committee had started to take stock of private businesses destroyed in the violence, pointing out that those with existing loan facilities and those with no loan would be supported to come back on their feet.

Also speaking, Cardoso promised that members of the rebuilding committee would give their full commitment to the recovery process, pointing out that the best decision Sanwo-Olu took was to get the private sector involved in the rebuilding effort.

“The task may seem though and arduous, but it is not unachievable. We will do it,” Cardoso assured.

Other members of the rebuilding committee are: the Managing Partner, Olaniwun Ajayi LP, Konyinsola Ajayi, SAN; Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank, Abubakar Suleiman; Co-founder and CEO, Flutterwave, Gbenga Agboola; Vice Chairman, Standard Chartered Bank, Bola Adesola – all representing the private sector – and a representative of an International Donor Agency.

Lagos State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Sam Egube, and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Jimi Hotonou, are members of the committee representing the public sector.

#EndSARS: House of Reps Commits to Supporting FG’s Efforts to Rebuild Lagos, Others

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, has said that the House is ready to support the interventions of the Federal Government to rebuild Lagos and other states worst hit by the recent EndSars protests.

Gbajabiamila also tasked Lagosians to put heads and resources together to rebuild the state in view of the destruction of properties worth billions of naira in the state.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Board of Trustees of the Rebuild Lagos Trust Fund on Monday in Lagos, Gbajabiamila said he was heartbroken after going round the state for an on-the-spot assessment of the devastation that followed the unrest.

He said it is time for Lagosians to put aside partisan politics and stand up to rebuild the state, saying “I believe more than ever before that saying, Eko o ni baje, and the quick reply is, O baje ti’.

“I believe in my heart, that this saying can never be truer than now, that Eko o ni baje, o de baje ti. (Never will Lagos go bad, never).

“We will rebuild this state with everything that we need, with all the tools at our disposal, we will rebuild Lagos. This is the time to prove it, that Eko o ni baje,” he said.

He said in rebuilding the state, there should be a public-private partnership, which he said would be one of the best ways to face the task.

“I think it goes beyond budget or appropriation. It will call for a special intervention from the Federal Government to make sure that monies are devoted, not just to Lagos, although Lagos bears the major devastation.

“So it’s going to be panoramic; it’s going to be for all the states, but we all know that Lagos bears the brunt of the devastation.

He particularly thanked Sanwo-Olu for protecting the businesses and properties owned by Igbo during the violence.

“I want to particularly thank Governor Sanwo-Olu for giving protection to our brothers from the South-east during the crisis. This is an indication that our people and their businesses are safe in Lagos. We will continue to live as a united country. With all of us working together, we can keep flourishing.”

He said the political leaders had drawn a number of lessons from the recent youth protests against police brutality, saying governors were now inclined to drive up inclusion in their policies and programmes.

In his remarks, Sanwo-Olu appreciated Ikpeazu for taking the pain to travel down to Lagos from the South-east to identify with the residents over the violence. He promised that Lagos State Government would continue to support business aspirations of the Igbo and protect their rights to live in Lagos.

In a related development, indigenes of South-east and South-south living in Lagos have paid solidarity visit to Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos House in Alausa.

#EndSARS Violence Won’t Discourage Officers from Performing Constitutional Duties – IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muhammed Adamu, Tuesday visited Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the State House in Marina where he declared that the #EndSARSProtestsTurnedBloody won’t discourage the men and women of the Nigeria Police Force from performing their constitutional duties.

Briefing journalists on his mission in Lagos, IGP said he was in the state for an assessment of the police assets vandalised after the protest and to commiserate with residents.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) visits Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu as part of assessment tour of states affected by violence and destruction that followed the #EndSARS protest against police brutality by Nigerian youths.

Adamu consoled the governor and people of Lagos over the coordinated arson, which left strategic assets of the state in ruins. He said the police had widened its intelligence to trace and arrest those that carried out the act.

According to him, “Lagos was the epicentre where the #EndSARS protest took place and the number of destruction in the subsequent violence was more in Lagos than any other part. I came to commiserate with the governor and people of the state. The destruction they suffered was uncalled for.

“The second leg of my visit is to see the police stations destroyed and boost the morale of our men in Lagos. We don’t want them to be demoralised by the event in which they suffered personal attacks. Policemen are trained to take such pain. Now that the event has happened, it shouldn’t discourage us from performing our constitutional duties.”

The police chief said he observed that the morale of some officers had dampened in the light of the violence, he noted that his visit would encourage them to give their all in protecting the lives and properties of the citizens.

Adamu said the scale of the destruction witnessed in Lagos and around the country called for the need by Nigerians to adopt standard protocols for public protests whenever they wanted to express their grievances against the system.

“It is very important to set up protocols that will prevent hoodlums to hijack peaceful protest organised with good intentions. The moment the protest organisers don’t have leadership, the purpose and intent of the effort would be defeated. As we have seen in the case of #EndSARS protest, no economy will be able to bear the loss that we have seen in Lagos,” IGP said.

Adamu visited some of the assets torched in Lagos, including the vandalised palace of Oba of Lagos,

Lagos State was the epicentre of the #EndSARS protest, which later snowballed to coordinated violence that led to a large-scale destruction of assets belonging to the state, Federal Government, police and private individuals.

Six police officers were lynched in Lagos, 36 critically injured, while 46 police stations were torched.

Responding, Sanwo-Olu commiserated with Adamu over the mob attacks on police personnel and torching of their stations.

  • Your Claims on Police Shooting at #EndSARS Protesters Untrue, IGP Tells Amnesty International

Your Claims on Police Shooting at #EndSARS Protesters Untrue, IGP Tells Amnesty International

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has dismissed report by Amnesty International, accusing the police personnel of shoting at peaceful protesters.

While affirming that officers of the Nigeria Police Force acted professionally, Adamu said his men exercised commendable restraints and some paid the supreme price for peace during the recent protests and ensuing violence in some parts of the country.

Reacting to the report by Amnesty International dated October 21 that police personnel shot at peaceful protesters, the police chief described the Amnesty International report as untrue, misleading and contrary to all available empirical evidences.

He noted that during the protests, police officers “used legitimate means to ensure that the protests were carried out in a peaceful manner and in most cases, physically protected and walked side-by-side with the protesters.”

He reiterated that even when the protests turned violent in some parts of the country, the officers still maintained utmost restraint and did not use excessive force in managing the situations.

“Available Reports show that twenty-two (22) police personnel were extra-judicially killed by some rampaging protesters and scores injured during the protests. Many of the injured personnel are in life threatening conditions at the hospitals.

“Two hundred and five (205) police stations and formations including other critical private and public infrastructure were also damaged by a section of the protesters.

“Despite these unprovoked attacks, our police officers never resorted to use of unlawful force or shooting at the protesters as alleged in the report. It also beggars imagination that Amnesty International failed to mention or pay tribute to Police officers who were gruesomely murdered during the protests while serving their fatherland.

“The Force decries the discriminatory tendencies exhibited by Amnesty International as seen in the report. One wonders if in the estimation of Amnesty International, police officers are not also human beings equally entitled to the protection of their fundamental rights to life and dignity of human person,” said Adamu, in a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba.

The Inspector General of Police, while noting that NPF is committed to the Federal Government’s ongoing holistic reforms of the Force targeted at improving service delivery, positive police-citizen relationship and respect for human rights, enjoined Amnesty International to ensure they subject their reports to adequate scrutiny and proper verification of facts before making the reports public.

#EndSARS: Again, Lagos Further Relaxes Curfew from 10pm to 6am

The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led Lagos State Government has again yielded to peoples’ appeals by announcing a further relaxation of the 24-hour curfew imposed after the breakdown of law and order, following the hijack of the peaceful #EndSARS protests.

The curfew would now be from 10pm till 6am.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement by Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, praised Lagosians for observing the curfew, which is expected to restore normalcy in the Centre of Excellence.

He urged all Lagosians to go about their businesses in peace, even as they shun “actions that can threaten our unity.”

The governor advised purveyors of fake news to stop causing disaffection among Lagosians, who are well known for being peace-loving and friendly.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olajide Oduyoye, has reaffirmed the commitment of its personnel to traffic control across the state, saying the temporary withdrawal of officers resulted from the arson, killings and violence that trailed the #EndSARS protests.

Oduyoye revealed that 12 LASTMA zonal offices were destroyed during the mayhem, while officers were attacked at various locations and, therefore, the agency’s operational efficiency and logistics were disrupted.

He stated that despite the temporary setback, LASTMA has taken stock, re-strategised and its officers have resumed their duties at intersections and junctions across the metropolis.

While assuring members of the public of the agency’s commitment to ensuring free traffic flow on all roads in Lagos State, Oduyoye thanked LASTMA officials for their cooperation, dedication and efforts on effective traffic management across the metropolis.

Speaking on a recent story being circulated on social media, Oduyoye debunked the report which alleged that Sanwo-Olu has directed the officers of the agency not to arrest any motorist who contravenes Lagos State Traffic Law.

The general manager pointed out that the false news story had made the rounds on the social media on previous occasions, adding that the company that generated the initial fake report had apologised, retracted and pulled down the news from its website earlier in the year.

According to him, “The primary duties of the agency is traffic control and the arrest of recalcitrant drivers as stated in the law that established the agency. The law was later reviewed by Lagos State House of Assembly in year 2018, with that of Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service. It is, therefore, logical that the governor, who is the number one law-abiding citizen and law enforcement officer in the state, would not flout the law through such pronouncement.

“I must implore all law-abiding citizens of Lagos State, especially motorists, to adhere strictly to the traffic law of the state in order not to run afoul of the law which has consequences. We must all have positive attitudes towards obeying the laws of the state which were made to ensure orderliness and fast-paced socio-economic improvement of individuals, corporate entities and generality of the people.”
