Buratai, Malami, Yahaya deny links with terrorism financiers
Senior former officials—ex-COAS Tukur Buratai, ex-AGF Abubakar Malami, and ex-COAS Faruk Yahaya—have pushed back against allegations linking them to terrorism financiers. Nigerian Troops Kill One Bandit, Arrest Two Others in Zamfara
Nigerian troops of Operation Hadarin Daji have killed an armed bandit and arrested two others when they engaged the criminals with superior firepower during a night patrol at Bakinruwa Riverside in Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
In a statement on Saturday, by the Coordinator, Media Operations, Defence Headquarters (DHq), Major General John Enenche, troops engaged the criminals who fled in disarray due to troops’ overwhelming superior firepower. During the encounter, one of the armed bandits was neutralized, while 2 of them were arrested. One AK-47 rifle and a loaded magazine were also recovered from the criminals.

“On 17 December 2020, troops of Forward Operating Base Shinkafi, while on night patrol, came in contact with some armed bandits at Bakinruwa Riverside in Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State” the General said.
In a related development, on 18 December 2020, troops deployed at Shinkafi arrested one Zainab at Shinkafi town in Shinkafi Local Government of Zamfara State.
According to General Enenche, the suspect was found roaming the town in police uniform.
He explained that: “A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is from Birnin Magaji Local Government Area of the State and has been involved in defrauding unsuspecting members of the public. All arrested suspects have been handed over to appropriate prosecuting agency for necessary action” Enenche stated.
The DHq chief attributed the latest efforts of the Nigerian military to its committment to forestall banditry and other criminal activities in the North Central Zone of the Country. He added that troops of Operation HADARIN DAJI have sustained its aggressive fighting posture in the Zone.

The Benue state government has banned all Christmas and New Year activities.
This was disclosed by the state Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Thursday December 17.
Governor Ortom explained that the decision was reached after a review of security situation in the state at the state’s security council meeting which he presided over at the Government House in Makurdi.
Residents of the state have been advised to celebrate the yuletide and new year festivities in their homes in line with COVID-19 protocols.

Nigerian Senators Threaten President Buhari with Impeachment Over Total Collapse of Security
Nigerian senators have on Tuesday threatened to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari and suspend the passing of Budget 2021 if the nation’s number one man and Commander in Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces fail to address the insecurity in the country.
Similarly on Tuesday, the Nigeria House of Representatives asked the authorities to urgently implement the Safe Schools Declaration to protect children and their teachers from attacks.
These reactions from the nation’s National Assembly is against the backdrop of heightened insecurity, especially the recent kidnap of over 300 hundred students in Katsina.
The call by the legislators came as Zamfara State closed boarding schools; while the cry for drastic solution to the low level insecurity has been raised higher by northern elders, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Sultan of Sokoto, among others.
Senators took turn to air their views on the deplorable state of security in the country amidst palpable anger.
Debating on a motion sponsored by Senator Bello Mandiya (APC, Katsina South), which sought investigation into the missing students, senators rejected, angrily, a call to invite service chiefs and Inspector General of Police for deliberation.
They submitted that the country had moved into a state of total collapse and urged the President to take full responsibility for massive security failure.
In his contribution, Senator Olubunmi Adetunbu (APC, Ekiti North) asked President Muhammadu Buhari to remember and fulfil the pledge he made in Chatham House, London in 2015, to tackle insecurity head on across the country.
Buhari had on February 26, 2015 in a speech in Chatham House, said that if elected President, the world would have no cause to worry about Nigeria “as it has had to recently.” He promised that Nigeria would return to its stabilising role in West Africa and that no inch of Nigerian territory would ever be lost to the enemy because “we will pay special attention to the welfare of our soldiers in and out of service, we will give them adequate and modern arms and ammunitions to work with.”
BUT reacting, yesterday, former Senate minority leader, Abiodun Olujimi, suggested that the National Assembly should halt work on the 2021 Budget Bill to compel President Muhammadu Buhari to listen to suggestions from Senate.
She said: “The presidency is not an award, it is a call to duty. And when you call a man to duty, he must be able to know when the buck stops on his table. Right now the buck stops on the President’s table as far as security in this country is concerned.”
She argued that the time had come for the Senate to take drastic action before the budget.
“We must think outside the box, we must hold government accountable because this is the third arm and we are equal in all,” she contended.
Senate spokesman, Ajibola Basiru, said the National Assembly should amend existing laws to empower the Legislature to play serious roles in securing the country. Such amendments, according to him, should allow the National Assembly to mete out sanctions to erring public officers.
Also, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, lamented the failure of President Muhammadu to execute motions passed by the Senate on growing insecurity in the country. He expressed the need to activate Section 143 of the Constitution, which deals with impeachment and removal of the President. He, however, said the intention was not to remove the President but to send warning signals.
He was of the opinion that the Senate immediately begins to gather signatures of at least one third of its members to be attached to its resolutions and sent to the President to make him realise that the Senate has powers to sanction him.
Senator Sani Musa (APC, Niger State) urged his colleagues to take decisions that could change the situation, saying: “We cannot continue to be leaders when the people we are leading are dying everyday. What are the police doing? Yesterday, armed bandits were roaming streets of towns buying bread and geisha and nobody said anything. There is need to draw the attention of the President that enough is enough, the service chiefs should go.”

Coalition Of Northern Groups Begins Expanded Protest #EndInsecurityNow Today
A Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has directed all its chapters across the 19 northern states to begin an expanded protest across the region today.
This was made known by the spokesperson of the coalition, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, while addressing journalist in Abuja.
Suleiman stated that the protest by the coalition will be tagged #Endinsecuritynow.
“With the insecurity challenges affecting northern state of the country, the CNG is left with no option but to direct the extension of the protests to all northern states, commencing from Thursday, October 15, 2020″, he said.

The coalition, speaking through Suleiman accused leaders in the North of habitual abandoment of their people when the need arises.
He said: “That while the southern elected and appointed leaders and representatives are quick to identify with their people at the time of need, their counterparts from the North, including the President, Senators, Rep members, governors, state legislators, other government appointees would rather abandon the hundreds of thousands of people in northern communities exposed to crime, lawlessness and insecurity in the hands of bandits, insurgents, kidnappers, rapists rustlers, and other violent criminals without any form of protection.
“That it is contradictory that despite several protests and pleas by northerners, the authorities never deemed it fit to extend the swift spirit deployed against FSARS into securing the North, or addressing the myriad distresses faced by northerners.
“That the authorities appear bent on sustaining the harsh, unacceptable regime of exploitative hikes in electricity tariffs for which the North shall bear the brunt more than other parts of the country,” he said.
To end all manifestations of insecurity in northern Nigeria and other parts of the country, the coalition urged the federal government to immediately declare a state of emergency on security and take practical steps.
The Coalition added that it will also demand thorough reorientation of the entire police force and its empowerment by way of additional personnel, modern training and adequate equipment to reclaim its universal internal security function.

Senate committee tasks military on ending insurgency in North-West Nigeria
Nigerian Troops fighting bandits in the North-West of the country have been urged to bring a decisive end to the scourge in the zone.
The call was made by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Alhaji Ali Ndume, at a press briefing held at the Nigerian Army Super Camp in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State during an inspection exercise of Nigerian Army’s Operation Sahel Sanity.
Senator Ndume reckoned that the operation has recorded much success, which is said to be evident in the resumption of farming and commercial activities in the affected Local Government Areas (LGAs).

While assuring that the National Assembly will work with the executive arm of government to provide resettlement for people who are still internally displaced, the lawmaker however charged the Army on doing more to stop attacks on rural communities and especially remote areas of the forest.
In his speech to newsmen earlier, the Head of Faskari Local Government Administration, Malam Lawal Ibrahim, said that the number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the area has reduced from five thousand to two thousand in the last two months.

PDP seeks President Buhari’s resignation over insecurity, corruption scandals
Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says President Muhammadu Buhari should resign over what it described as failure to tackle insecurity and attempting to turn a blind eye to allegations of corruption.
The call for Buhari’s resignation was made by the National Chairman of the Party, Mr Uche Secondus at a news briefing held in Abuja Friday.
The party Chief in his remark titled, ‘Nigeria on a Free Fall as Corruption, Insecurity Engulfs Our Nation,’ said rising insecurity across the country has exposed the poor leadership in the military and ruling class.

He said, “What we are witnessing in our country today is a total collapse of the nation, the country is on a ventilator gasping for air, under such circumstance. Preamble.
Gentlemen of the press, I have had to call you again to discuss the frightening developments in our country.
As an opposition party, the PDP has screamed endlessly to high heavens but it’s becoming very clear to all that the ears we are targeting are deaf as nothing on ground shows that there is a government in this country.
No attempt is being made from any corner to stem the freighting tide in our land.
No effort is being made from any angle to halt the on-going free fall being witnessed in all fronts in the country. Nigerians have become helpless and have come to accept and live like citizens of nations without leader and with no direction.
Where do we start looking at the state of the nation when all segments of governance have collapsed.Insecurity.
Nothing establishes the fact that there is no governance in the country more than the worsening state of insecurity. Having exhausted their propaganda of winning the war on terrorism only in their press releases, as reality endowed on all, both the military and political leaders are now helpless and confused.
What the Nigerian Senate did on Tuesday when it asked the service chiefs to resign was to show to the World that there is no executive arm of government in place.
Having few months back advised the executive to sack the service chiefs for having outlived their relevance and re-engineer the military for the emerging challenges, and having watched the security situation in the country grow from worse to worse, the legislators have limited option but to do what they did at least to show the people they represent that they are sensitive to their plights.
Not even during the three-year brutal civil war did we witness as much as over 300 soldiers absconding their duties and pouring abuses on their commander. Only poor leadership from the military and the polity can drag down morale of soldiers to such a pitiable level. Corruption.
Since transparency International said few years ago that the worst corruption was going-on in Nigeria under this regime, the situation has continued to worsen.
It has now become a bazar with no pretense about it with all critical agencies of government including the anti-graft body themselves grossly engulfed in it.The nation’s economy is walking to depression because we are least in recession and it’s being fast-tracked by the widening scope of corruption involving operatives at the high places.
The free for all corruption going on all over the place leaves us with the impression that the country is dying and there has been a scramble for what one can get out of it before the final demise.
It’s very disheartening that as the looting and the re-looting of the nation’s resources are going on under the watch of the acclaimed anti-corruption President no serious reactions is coming from government that prides itself to be fighting corruption.
Rather than confront the already exposed corruption cases, the government deliberately takes cautious steps to play it down with a view to protecting their members who are neck-deep in the growing sleaze.
“After providence decided to expose the massive fraud going on in the nation’s anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the last five years, rather than bring it to the fore, the Presidency in the great cover-up decided to take the investigation including the interrogation of suspects to Aso Rock Villa behind camera where all the exposed issues are kept away from the public glare.

We are aware that after the massive fraud exposition involving critical members of the administration, subtle moves are on behind the scene to free culprits and save the face of the government at the expense of the nation.
This has been the case since this administration came in 2015 disguising as an anti-corruption regime while in reality looting the country dry.
“After their double speak on fuel subsidy and prizing, they have recorded the highest amount of subsidy in the petroleum sector while running the show in utmost secrecy with the President presiding as both the President and the Petroleum Minister.
As we speak, the big corruption cover-up is on-going in critical sectors, the Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA, the Maritime Sector, the Customs, the Federal inland Revenue Service, FIRS, Nigeria Social Insurance a Trust Fund, NSITF, North East Development Commission, NNPC crude Oil sale to China, etc.
Nothing brings out the exact character of President Buhari’s administration to corruption than the on-going free for all fraud at the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, where the so-called forensic auditors sent in by the President to unearth a fraud are themselves becoming visible accomplice to the crime. The Senate has already indicted the Interim Management Committee, IMC, and the supervising Minister Senator Godswill Akpabio. Suspected Boko Haram insurgents slay 5 aid workers in Borno
A video has surfaced online showing the execution of five persons by masked men in military camouflage, suspected to be Boko Haram fighters.
A voice was heard speaking in Hausa before the execution, saying that the five persons were working for infidels.
“Those of you that are being used by infidels to turn others to infidels, know this today oh, you who work for infidel groups, you satisfy their aims but they do not care about you and that is why when we catch you they do not show concern. Our call to you is to repent and follow Allah; we shall waylay you in all the roads that you follow and if you don’t listen, the fate of these ones will befall you,” the voice said.
The execution immediately followed his speech at the cue of another voice that said “bisimillah.”
The slain persons are believed to be aid workers captured during a raid in Monguno Local Government of Borno State on June 13, 2020.
They include staff of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, Action Against Hunger, Rich International, International Rescue Committee and a security guard.
The execution came after the insurgents demanded the sum of 500,000 dollars to release them.
A staff of the SEMA who pleaded anonymity identified his colleague among those executed, who had also featured in a recent video where they spoke from captivity pleading with the government to intervene.
Despite several air raids by the military and assurances by the Federal Government that many insurgents have been neutralised, they have continued to resurface, attacking communities, aid workers, and even military bases.
Last year, Jihadists aligned with the Islamic State group released a video showing a female aid worker and five male colleagues who had been kidnapped in an attack in northeast Nigeria.
Aid group, Action Against Hunger, had said earlier that one of its staff members along with three health workers and two drivers were missing after their convoy was attacked near the border with Niger.
One of the six hostages who had been held since July, was eventually executed in September, while four others were killed in December.
Thereafter, the French aid group, said it was “extremely concerned and called for the immediate release of its staff member, Grace, who was the only one left in captivity.”

Update: Buhari reiterates prerogative, as Senate demands sack of Service Chiefs
Nigerian Senate has demanded that President Muhammadu Buhari sacks service chiefs for their failure to ensure security as the nation continues to grapple with terrorism, banditary and kidnapping.
The demand asking for the dismissal of service chiefs was made by Senators during plenary on Tuesday in reaction to a motion by Senator Ali Ndume.
Senators are concerned about the security situation in the country. (File photo) Senator Ndume moved his motion on the back of the ambush of soldiers recently and the alleged voluntary resignation of soldiers.
According to the Senator, it is worrying that soldiers were ambushed recently in Katsina with several of them killed as well as allegations of unprecedented voluntary retirement of over 200 soldiers.
He says if this trend continues, it will have dire consequences on the country.
Despite his concerns about the security situation, Senator Ndume did not call for the dismissal of the service chiefs.
The call for their dismissal was an additional prayer to his motion in the course of deliberations.
In what appears to be a swift reaction to the resolution of the Senate, the Presidency in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, reminded the lawmakers that the issue of appointment and removal of Service Chiefs is at the prerogative of the President of the Repair of Nigeria.
“The Senate Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on the Service Chiefs to resign or be sacked due to the multi-pronged security challenges in the country.
The Presidency notes the resolution, and reiterates that appointment or sack of Service Chiefs is a Presidential prerogative, and President Muhammadu Buhari, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, will do what is in the best interest of the country at all times” the Staten read.
