Former President Goodluck Jonathan Pledges Active Role in PDP Rebirth

Figures cited by Leadership show former President Goodluck Jonathan met with the Tanimu Turaki‑led National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP and pledged a more active role in the party’s reorganization ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Jonathan urged party members to avoid divisive tendencies and focus on rebuilding unity and a platform that resonates with Nigerians, as the PDP battles internal crises and defections.

The Nation and Daily Post also tracked the development, reporting on Jonathan’s engagement with party leadership and his call for unity and discipline as a pathway to a stronger opposition.

Echotitbits take: Jonathan’s entry could help stabilize the PDP and slow defections, but his effectiveness will depend on balancing governors’ interests with emerging power blocs. Expect internal negotiations to intensify as 2027 draws closer.

Buhari, El-Rufai, Saraki, PDP Mourn Passing of Ex-Kaduna State Governor, Balarabe Musa

President Muhammadu Buhari; the Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led Kaduna State Government; former Senate President Bukola Saraki; and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have mourned the passing of the first elected governor of Kaduna State, Balarabe Musa, who served the state from October 1979 to June 1981.

While joining the government and people of Kaduna State in mourning Musa, Buhari said the former governor’s passing would be “sorely missed by all Nigerians, who have diligently followed his antecedents as a voice for the voiceless.”

The President believed Musa “reflected the passion and vigour that heralded Nigeria’s independence, which steadily translated into activism for return to democracy at the height of military interregnum and has remained steadfast in the call for good and inclusive governance.”

As the former governor goes home, Buhari affirmed that he left “a bold footprint on Nigeria’s democracy, and his role in promoting good governance and development will always be remembered and appreciated by posterity.”

The President, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, prayed God to grant his soul eternal rest, and comfort his family, friends and associates.

Announcing the death of Musa, El-Rufai said Kaduna State is proud of the public service the former governor rendered to the state and its people.

“Alhaji Balarabe Musa will be remembered as a progressive politician who tried in his time as governor to expand the horizons of opportunity for ordinary people.

“He made notable contributions to industrialising the state. As a leader, he demonstrated at the ballot box, the capacity of a political party devoted to the protection of the interest of ordinary people to acquire power democratically.

“As a private citizen, he projected the qualities of principled politics, decency, integrity, consistency and commitment to improving the lives of our ‘talakawa’ in Kaduna State and Nigeria.

“Despite the setback of his unwarranted impeachment from the office of Governor, Alhaji Balarabe Musa remained steadfast to his principles and spoke his mind often, helping to project a radical voice in public discourse in defense of democracy, and to advance social justice.

“As we pay tribute to his life of unblemished public service, we pray Allah to forgive his shortcomings, grant him al-Jannar Firdaus and to comfort his family,” said El-Rufai, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye.

In his condolence message, Senate President Bukola Saraki, described the passing of Musa “a renowned statesman who fought for our return to democracy and a former Governor of Kaduna State” as “a great loss to the nation.”

He therefore sent his heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Kaduna State, saying Musa would be “dearly missed.”

Ex-President Jonathan Urges Maximum Restraint Over #EndSARS Protest

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has condemned the “use of deadly force” on #EndSARS protesters in Lagos state.

Protests against the defunct police special anti-robbery squad (SARS) turned violent in many parts of the country leading to loss of lives and property.

President Buhari joined by Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Former Head of State Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Head of Interim Government H.E. Chief Ernest Shonekan and Former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar during a Virtual Meeting with Former Heads of State in State House on 23rd Oct 2020

Men dressed in army fatigue were alleged to have shot at protesters at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos, a claim the Nigerian army has since denied.

Such actions would only worsen the situation, calling on all parties to embrace dialogue, Jonathan said in a statement on Thursday.

He asked security agencies to ensure maximum restraint was applied in carrying out their responsibilities and also asked young Nigerians to “give peace a chance especially now that different stakeholders have demonstrated the willingness to investigate the various allegations of excessive use of force on citizens and address the culture of impunity by security personnel”.

President Buhari on Wednesday held a nationwide broadcast, and reiterated that government was meeting the demands of the protesters.

Earlier on Thursday, he met with the country’s former presidents, including Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo.

The meeting was held behind close doors as details of the discussion is still being awaited.

Condolences Pour in For Late Emir of Zazzau

    • Gbajabiamila Pays Condolence Visit to Zazzau Emirate
    • Jonathan, PDP Mourn

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, Tuesday visited the Zazzau Emirate to commiserate with the family of late Emir of Zazzau, Aliyu Idris and Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Gbajabiamila was received by the Secretary to the Government of Kaduna State, Balarabe Lawal, and members of the Zazzau Emirate Council.

He described late Emir as a man of integrity who dedicated himself to the service of his people, noting that the demise of the Emir was a great loss not just to the Emirate but also to the country as a whole.

According to him, “The people of this great Emirate, let me say to you that you’re not alone on this loss. This is indeed a big loss to the people of the Emirate, the state and the country as a whole. I say a great loss because whenever you go to commiserate, you hear what a loss, what a loss, what a loss!

“But I say this with profound ‎seriousness because for those of us who have followed our late Emir, who have come to know him, knew him for whom he was: a man of integrity, dedicated to the service of his people.

“I was here some time ago, late last year, in November, when we prayed and we sat, and it was like I had known him forever.

“Perhaps, one of the most impressive things for me was the way he pronounced my name with ease. It tells you the kind of person the late Dr Shehu Idris was.

“On behalf of myself and on behalf of every single member of the House of Representatives, on behalf of 360 of us, I pay this condolence visit in my personal capacity as one of his followers and in my capacity as the Speaker.

“They have sent me here to commiserate with you. We ask that the Almighty Allah will grant him Jannatul Firdaus, that He will forgive him his sins, and that his soul will rest in perfect peace.”

The Speaker personally delivered separate condolence letters to the governor through the secretary and the Emirate council through some senior Emirate council members.

Gbajabiamila was accompanied on the condolence visit by the House Leader, Alhassan Doguwa, and some members of the House from Kaduna State.

Also, former president Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday visited Kaduna to condole with the family of late Emir of Zazzau, Shehu Idris, the Zazzau Emirate, and Kaduna State Government.

Jonathan paid a glowing tribute to late Emir, describing him as a renowned custodian of people’s custom and culture.

“The late monarch who was on the throne for almost half a century left enviable footprints in peace-building, and as a renowned custodian of his people’s custom and culture,” the former president said.

He prayed Allah to grant him Jannatul Firdaus.

In a related development, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has mourned the death of the highly revered Emir of Zazzau, describing his death as an irreparable national loss.

The party also described late Idris as an “extraordinary and exceptionally loved monarch, who served his people with utmost dedication and spent his life in the pursuit of their happiness as well as the wellbeing and peaceful coexistence of all Nigerians.”

PDP said: “The late Emir of Zazzau was a selfless leader and outstanding nationalist, who made immeasurable sacrifices in his relentless roles towards the development and stability of our dear nation, and demonstrated that the essence of statesmanship is in employing its values to the advantage of others rather than the self.

“Our party calls on the Federal Government to take steps to further immortalise the late Emir, including naming a national monument after him.”

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, commiserated with Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, and the state government; the family of the departed Emir as well as the good people of the Zazzau Emirate.

PDP prayed Allah to console them and grant the faithful departed an eternal rest.

  • Jonathan, Saraki Congratulate Obaseki, Describe Re-election as Opportunity to Deliver Campaign Promises

Jonathan, Saraki Congratulate Obaseki, Describe Re-election as Opportunity to Deliver Campaign Promises

A former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, and a former senate president, Bukola Saraki, have congratulated Godwin Obaseki over his re-election as Edo State Governor.

Jonathan, in his congratulatory message, tasked the re-elected governor to rise above partisan politics and govern for the good people of Edo State, irrespective of party leaning.

The former president also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for overseeing a process that allowed the votes of the good people of Edo to count.

“I congratulate His Excellency Godwin Obaseki on his re-election as Edo State Governor and the INEC Nigeria for overseeing a process that allowed the votes of the good people of Edo to count.

“Democracy can only be consolidated to promote good governance in our nation and continent when our elections become credible, transparent and truly represent the wish of the voters.

“Democracy is about the good of all the people and not for winners and losers.

“As the election has been contested and won, I urge His excellency to rise above partisan politics and govern for the good of Edo people, irrespective of party leaning.

“This is the way to deepen our democracy and bring development to the people,” Jonathan said.

Saraki, on his part, congratulated Obaseki who he described as “friend and brother” on his re-election as Edo State Governor.

The former senate president called on Obaseki to see his re-election as an opportunity to deliver on his campaign promises and to continually work to actualise the wishes and aspirations of Edo people.

“The result of Edo gubernatorial election represents the true wish of the people who stood firmly behind their governor against power mongers who were determined to foist their choice on the people. It represents the will of the people to vote in free, fair, credible and peaceful elections.

“The people of Edo State who had sleepless nights in order to protect their votes, those who rejected the cash being thrown around to buy their votes and the intimidation to force them to compromise their belief, deserve our praise. Therefore, my congratulations go to all the people of Edo State.

“Let me give kudos to the leaders and governors in our party, PDP, for working together to achieve this victory. PDP leaders and members in Edo State who whole-heartedly accepted Governor Obaseki since he joined the party and co-operated with him to bring about this victory deserve to be appreciated.

“The result of the just concluded election also represents the fact that our people actually desire to be governed by a truly democratic government headed by those they genuinely voted for. It represents the fact that our security and electoral officials can conduct free and fair elections if they have the right atmosphere. We are happy that throughout this election we did not see the military brutalising the people or security officials supervising the snatching of ballot boxes and vandalisation of votes. Thus, the military and other security agencies deserve commendation for this successful poll.

“We also saw how INEC officials maturely handled the complaints of APC agent who sought to create confusion at the state collation centre when Orihomwon Local Government result was about to be declared. INEC and its officials deserve to be commended for their neutrality in this election.

“We can see that the result represents realistic figures from one local government area to the other. No case of outlandish figures being reeled out. That is also a sign of some level of credibility in the process. It is for the above reasons that I have to commend President Muhammadu Buhari for keeping the military out of this election and for giving the instructions that led to the apparent neutrality of members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other security officials in the entire process.

“Edo election result is a victory for our country, her people and democracy. We have shown that the glory of the country is more valuable to the citizens than the wish of a tiny power clique,” he said.

Mali Crisis: Ex-President Jonathan leads ECOWAS Mission to to Buhari

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday led a team of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Mission to Mali on a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Jonathan, who is ECOWAS Special Envoy on restoring peace to Mali was at the State House to brief President Buhari on the update in the troubled nation, said Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

“We told them that no international organization, including the African Union (AU), United Nations (UN), and others, would agree with their position. We continued to emphasize the need for dialogue,” Jonathan was quoted as saying.

According to Adesina, the former President stated that the Constitutional Court had been reconstituted and inaugurated, while vacancies in the Supreme Court had been filled, thus sorting out the judicial arm of government.

In his remark, President Buhari thanked his predecessor, according to him, for “the stamina you have displayed” on the Mali issue.

He counselled further consultations with the Chairman of ECOWAS, President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger Republic.

About a month ago, Jonathan was at the State House to brief President Buhari on the political development in Mali.

During an unexpected visit on August 11, the night before opposition-led demonstrations against embattled President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, Jonathan at a press briefing said “demonstrations do not solve problems per se”.

The lingering crisis led West African leaders in their quest to broker peace in the landlocked nation flew to Bamako on July 24 in the heat of protests calling for President Keita’s resignation.

However, as the intervention failed to seal a deal, Niger’s President Mahamadou Issoufou — at the talks along with the leaders of Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria — said Western African bloc ECOWAS would hold a summit on July 27.

The lingering crisis: The opposition movement continues to mount pressure on President Keita, who came to power in 2013, to end the nation’s jihadist conflict that has been ongoing for many years.

Despite the presence of foreign troops, the insurgency in the small nation of about 20 million people, mostly poor, has since 2012 displaced hundreds of thousands of people who are now homeless.

In a recent violence according to French officials, a French soldier was killed and two others were wounded in a suicide bomb  attack in northern Mali.

But much of the current tension was sparked in April, when the constitutional court tossed out 31 results from the parliamentary elections, benefiting Keita’s party and sparking protests.

Tensions then ratcheted up into a crisis on July 10 when an anti-Keita rally organised by the June 5 Movement turned violent.
