Amosun’s 68th Birthday Turns Into Political Power Play in Abeokuta

Former Ogun State Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun marked his 68th birthday with a large gathering at the Ake Palace Pavilion in Abeokuta that effectively doubled as a political endorsement rally.

Speaking to supporters, Amosun stressed that for political balance and national stability, the Southern part of Nigeria should complete an eight-year term in office through 2031, urging patience with the current administration amid economic pressures.

The outing also included a philanthropic stop at the Ibara Correctional Centre, where Amosun and associates distributed essential supplies and relief materials to inmates.

Echotitbits take: This rally is a calculated reminder that Amosun remains a kingmaker in Ogun State. By aligning himself so visibly with the President early in the 2027 conversation, he is positioning his political family for a major comeback, potentially setting the stage for a showdown with rival factions within the Ogun State APC.

Amosun Rallies Mammoth Crowd in Abeokuta, Endorses Tinubu for 2027

Former Ogun State Governor and Senator Ibikunle Amosun turned his 68th birthday celebration into a large-scale political rally at the Ake Palace Pavilion in Abeokuta on January 25, 2026. Addressing supporters, Amosun publicly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second-term bid ahead of 2027, arguing that the South should complete an eight-year tenure for stability and equity.

Amosun described rotational presidency as a practical framework for national cohesion. He maintained that after eight years of Northern leadership, fairness requires that the presidency remain in the South until 2031, positioning Tinubu as the region’s consensus candidate. Despite reports of internal party friction and alleged boycott directives, the rally drew prominent APC figures and filled the pavilion to capacity.

Beyond politics, the event reportedly included a humanitarian visit to the Ibara Correctional Centre, where Amosun’s team donated relief items. Additional reporting characterized the rally as a demonstration of enduring political influence, with Amosun urging Nigerians to exercise patience with ongoing reforms and to respect zoning in the interest of national stability.

Echotitbits take: Amosun is effectively reminding everyone that he remains the “issue” in Ogun politics. By backing Tinubu so early and so publicly, he is carving out a strategic position for himself in the 2027 power map, likely to the chagrin of the current state administration.

  • Ogun Airports: Ex-Governor Amosun Camp Accuses Dapo Abiodun-Government of Lies

Ogun Airports: Ex-Governor Amosun Camp Accuses Dapo Abiodun-Government of Lies

Within the past 48 hours, Ogun State has been embroiled in needless controversy over the competing claims of Governor Dapo Abiodun, his team and the Senate Committee on Aviation as regards the ownership, relevance, stage of work, viability, documentation and priority claims between the Federal Government owned Abeokuta International Airport in Wasimi and the proposed Ogun State owned Ilisan Cargo Airport.

Speaking on National television, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Smart Adeyemi described the standoff as: “a very interesting and welcome development as the Gateway State is blessed and viable enough to host as many airports of all descriptions as the Stakeholders want, ready and willing to fund”.

In the defense of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun (SIA) administration, ex-Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa stated in a statement explained that the SIA camp felt the need to respond only because of it owe the people of Ogun State a duty to reveal the truths against alleged lies by the State Government led by Prince Dapo Abiodun.

Adeoluwa accused state officials of deliberately claiming ignorance of the existence of the proposed International Airport in Wasinmi area of Ogun State.

“The Engr. Mokuolu led Committee visited, inspected and evaluated the Abeokuta International Airport project, among others. The report was submitted to Ogun State Government in April 2020. Not only did the exercise put a lie to the claims that the current administration knew nothing about the project, the reports of the Verification exercise had kind words about the quality and standard of projects embarked upon by our Administration. “

During his interaction with the Senate Committee on Aviation, Governor Dapo Abiodun said a lot of verifiable work had started on the agro-cargo airport project, which had the approval of the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

He, however, informed the committee that there were no details or information on the Ewekoro project in the handing-over note of the Amosun administration.

“This administration is methodical. The need to have a cargo airport was made by our joint inter ministerial committee and we consequently evaluated the initiatives that were started by previous administrations because government is a continuum.

“After a thorough evaluation, the choice of the airport cargo location in Ilishan was unanimous, it complements the agric/processing factories’ ecosystem in that corridor with access/egress road network.

“To that extent, our decisions are guided by the principles of good governance. Is it fair, just and equitable to all? Is the process transparent and inclusive? Did the people have input?

    The Statement

As the immediate past office holders and administration in Ogun State between 2011 – 2019, we have long taken the position not to get involved, banter or trade claims with the current administration. The reasons are obvious. As members of the same political party, APC, we owe ourselves a seamless and cooperative disposition in a manner that all Ogun residents and stakeholders irrespective of divergent tendencies and persuasion will maximally benefit from the dividends of democracy and rapid progressive socio-economic development that our party is known for.

We were determined to do everything possible to uphold the dignity of the offices, particularly that of Governor of Ogun State, and the institution it represents for the greater good of our people. However, watching the video and reading the accounts of the meeting between the Senate Committee on Aviation and officials of the Ogun State Government, and the many lies and concocted half-truths, we consider that we owe our people and Nigerians at large the duty to speak the truth without necessarily infringing our ‘Sidon look’ disposition.

The Abeokuta International Airport project in Wasimi, Ogun State was conceived in 2008 by the Federal Government as an Airstrip. The location was particularly well thought out: only 5 minutes from Yewa land, Ogun West Senatorial District, with both Lafarge Cement and Dangote’s Ibeshe Cement plant as immediate neighbours; in close proximity to the Federal Government Olorunsogo Power Plant, Onijanganjangan, Agbara, Ota, Abeokuta and Sagamu Interchange industrial hubs.

The industrial Gas belt and both the old and new Railway lines, the Standard Gauge, and Kajola Railway integrated transport hub, lie within minutes of the Airport site. These industrial clusters helped to crown Ogun State as the largest concentration of Industries and Manufacturing activities in Nigeria. It is on record that the Federal Government, since 2009, made appropriation and consistently prosecuted this project. Indeed, the perimeter fence for the Airport was completed in 2010, a year before our assumption of office in 2011

The Ilisan Cargo Airport, on the other hand, was conceived by the Otunba Gbenga Daniel administration in 2006. After we took office in 2011, we sought to know the progress on the project. We visited the proposed site and sought technical advice on how to proceed. The Contractor engaged by the former administration refused to cooperate with us. He refused to avail us the drawings and technical details.

For unclear reasons, he chose litigation, after we rejected their humongous monetary claims. When we visited the site, we observed that it was in a built-up neighborhood and there were several encroachments. There was nothing on ground, not even a perimeter fence to delineate the project site – the only feasible thing was a sign post with the Ogun State logo indicating the name of the Cargo Airport, Ilisan. Though the Ilisan proposed Cargo Airport site will ordinarily be suitable but the large-scale encroachment and built-up areas had made the site unsuitable for the project.

The Experts engaged by our Administration in 2012 advised that an airport in Ogun East Senatorial District, will be best sited within Ogun Waterside and Ijebu East Local Governments to serve the Olokola Free Trade Zone axis, and will make more sense on account of the proposed Deep-Sea Port projected for the area and the activities along the Ijebu-Ode/Epe corridor. Besides, the Experts equally pointed out the suitability of the axis because it is a green field and free of encumbrances. They were very clear that the site chosen in Ilisan has totally become unsuitable for an airport – be it Cargo or otherwise as at March, 2012. Faced with these practical and technical realities, our attention shifted back to the Federal Government owned Abeokuta International Airport, Wasimi which was already on going.

As we were not in any doubt that an Airport anywhere within the shores of our State will be good for our people, we vigorously engaged the then President Goodluck Jonathan administration. Correspondences were exchanged followed by several project site visits. We did same after President Muhammadu Buhari came on board. We observed that the monetary appropriation for the Abeokuta Airport project, though regular, were meagre. To ensure that our people get to reap this particular dividend of democracy in record time, Ogun State Government requested and was granted permission to get involved and speed up the project.

We knew and understood clearly the importance of infrastructure in the socio-economic development of a State or Country. That is why we embarked on massive infrastructural development immediately after our Administration was inaugurated. We were therefore able to move the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Ogun State from N700 Million monthly when we got into office in May 2011 to a little over N7 Billion monthly when we left in May, 2019.

For the record, our Administration engaged the Federal Ministry of Aviation on the need to upgrade the Airstrip to a full-fledged International Airport. The request was granted and the Airstrip status changed to an International Airport with a full bouquet Passenger, Cargo, Aircraft Maintenance, Storage and Warehouses, VIP/Executive services, Aircraft Hangers/MRO, as well as Flight Training School and Education Building, among others.

The project was designed to serve as major ‘pressure reliever’ to Lagos Murtala Muhammed international Airport whose facilities had reached a breaking point. It was expected to leverage off and take full advantage of Abeokuta’s proximity to Lagos, to ease and speed up the movement of passengers, goods, services and business to the State from the rest of the Country and the World.

It is also important to state that the Abeokuta International Airport in Wasimi has a much bigger Cargo and Agro Allied terminal, which is the sole focus of the proposed Cargo Airport, Ilisan.

It is on record that after we left office in 2019, the current Governor Dapo Abiodun led administration instituted a probe, cleverly called Project Review Committee, into 110 (One Hundred and Ten) of our legacy projects, including our intervention at the Abeokuta International Airport, Wasimi.

The Engr. We need not say more.

We have said we will take no interest in trading blames with the current administration. It is for this reason that we shall overlook the fact that from day one, the current regime in Ogun State simply wanted the Abeokuta Airport project in Wasimi moribund. Very early after it took office, the Ogun State Government forcefully halted the then ongoing works at the Abeokuta Airport site in Wasimi. They told the Contractors that Ogun State do not need the Airport anymore and directed the Contractors to remove their equipmentfrom the Airport. They forgot or cared less that Ogun State Government does not own the project directly.

It was also unimportant to them that whereas Ilisan Airport was conceptualized in 2006, with approval secured in February, 2008, there was nothing on ground in 2011, five/three calendar years after, not even the perimeter fence was erected as mentioned earlier. It is curious, ominous and totally against the grain of reason that Ogun State will reject a life changing infrastructural development from the Federal Government.

For the avoidance of doubt, we want an Airport in Ogun East Senatorial District. These are significant signs of real socio-economic development and was indeed captured in Ogun State Development Plan (2018-2030). Airports should be sited in axis most needed and suitable taking into consideration the safety of our people.

The Abeokuta International Airport project in Wasimi has come to stay. It is serviced by a 12km access dual carriage way (under construction), and, a fully established and defined6-kilometer Runway, among other components at different stages. We engaged with the understanding of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, Industry leaders and tested professionals in airport design and construction, airport navigation aids, airfield firefighting equipment and airside markings and signage. Amongst these are:

    • Messrs Gensler of USA
    • Messrs Aurecom of South Africa
    • Messrs PW Nigeria Limited
    • Messrs GTMC GmbH Limited of Germany
    • Messrs Airport Business Advisors Limited
    • Messrs Southern Mapping Company

We are filled with pride that we served the good people of Ogun State to the best of our ability and within the resources available to us. We are pleased that the good people of Ogun State appreciated our modest efforts, and, in return, gave us their support. We have done our bit, and, have moved on. Let everyone who is privileged to hold office in any capacity be guided by the Oath of Office at all times. The verdict of history and posterity await us all.

Ogun: Ex-Governor Amosun Kicks Back at Abiodun Over “Unpaid ₦106.9 Billion” Workers’ Benefits

Former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has kicked back at the Dapo Abiodun-led government, which had accused the erstwhile administration of negligence in an unpaid ₦106.9 Billion gratuity; leave bonus, contributory pension and promotion arrears due to workers, a situation that led to a strike action by labour union in the state on September 16, 2020.

In a rebuttal statement Friday titled- Ogun State Workers Strike Putting The Records Straight (2011-2019), signed and sent to Echotitbits by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in the Ibikunle Amosun administration, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, stated that: “our conscious decisions to stay in our lane were violated last week during the well-publicized Ogun State worker’s strike. In the defense by the current administration, references were made to matters relating to our administration which we believe for reasons of posterity needed to be corrected”.

Adeoluwa, accusing the Dapo Abiodun-led government of overstating an amount of N9.6B in figures pertaining to gratuity stated that: “A total sum of ₦22.9B was the outstanding Gratuity for Local Government and SUBEB as against the ₦32.5B published.

“It is instructive to note that a backlog of 3 years left by the previous administration was paid by our administration.”

The Amosun administration equally said it discovered that the liability under Leave Bonus was overstated by ₦1.6B as against the actual outstanding liability of ₦7.6B an amount of ₦9.6B was claimed in the publication.

“As we have done with all other staff related liabilities inherited by us from the previous administration, we also paid all outstanding inherited Leave Bonus liability from the previous Administration”, Adeoluwa stated in the statement.

Reacting to pension issues raised, the Amosun-administration said it identified the Contributory Pension Scheme as a very tricky one.

While it stated that the total liabilities stood at ₦41.4 Billion (State – ₦20.03B, LG & SUBEB – ₦21.37B), the Amosun-admiistration said it cannot be held responsible for the outstanding debts of ₦41.4B attributed to us.

”It was a good initiative, but badly implemented without cash backing by the administration before us. This led us to engage the Labour leaders, and subsequently the law setting up the scheme was therefore reviewed – allowing workers that will be retiring on or before 2025 to have the opportunity of opting for the old pension scheme arrangement.

“This obviously resulted in many civil and public servants opting for early retirement leading to high increase in the amount of resultant Gratuity liabilities and payments. We did this review to correct the faulty implementation of the programme and to give enough time to provide adequate fund (sinking fund) for effective and seamless running of the programme.

“We noticed also that the amount of ₦46.5 Billion published as the outstanding Contributory Pension liabilities was overstated by ₦5.1 Billion. As the total liabilities stood at ₦41.4 Billion (State – ₦20.03B, LG & SUBEB – ₦21.37B). Respectfully, we cannot therefore be held responsible for the outstanding debts of ₦41.4B attributed to us.”

On the issue of promotion arrears, the Amosun-administration said since by convention, the exercise for promotion for year 2018 will have to be conducted in 2019. It was the responsibility of the new administration to oversee the subsequent ones beginning from 2018.

It added that: “We conducted the one for year 2017, and was duly cash backed and paid.

“In view of this, we do not owe the ₦217M in respect of Promotion Arrears, as claimed in the publication.

“We wish to place on records that we made full disclosure of our financial status and deliberately included that of SUBEB and LGAs. This is more than we got when we took over government.

“The declared liabilities of ₦49.23B passed on to us by the previous government carefully excluded amounts outstanding and owed to the other tiers of government (the Local Government) which was material in amount, and all of which our Administration have since paid.

“We gained from our experience and financial analysis that without attaining a financial break-even point in the state IGR, the State will continue to lag behind in development. The foundation and trajectory for further growth of the State IGR which we had established ought to be reinforced by the current and indeed all succeeding Administration in order to meet up on its financial obligations to the Ogun workers and indeed all the good people of Ogun State.

“From the critical analyses and review of Ogun State finances vis-à-vis the current and future financial needs and development of the State, the financial break-even point for the State will be if and when the State attain the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) figure of at least ₦12.5 Billion. Without this, succeeding Administration will continue to encounter the same financial difficulties and crises.

“From the Financial Outlook of the State as contained in the Ogun State Development Plan (2017-2030), we were confident to predict that by year 2022, the State’s IGR will be between ₦12 Billion to ₦14 Billion monthly, while a further projected figure put it at ₦20 Billion per month by year 2025. This is no rocket science, but an outcome of a coordinated approach and well articulated plan laid out by our Administration.

The Amosun-administration however concluded that: “in light of this, it is expected that any succeeding administration after us will continue with the Ogun Standard way of thinking out of the box in order to take our dear State to the highest pedestal, whose foundation had already been laid by our Administration and the Contributions and Efforts of those GIANTS that came before us”.

In a statement issued September 17, where the state government reacted to the dispute and strike notice by labour in the state, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Adetokunbo Talabi, informed the striking workers that the state government inherited N106.9billion unpaid welfare package.

Talabi noted that government considered the abrupt withdrawal of the labour team and unilateral declaration of one-week strike as unfair, indecorous and violation of the principles of collective bargaining, adding that it was a surprise that labour would take the step even when the negotiation process was still on.

OGUN STATE WORKERS STRIKE PUTTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHT (2011-2019)

Since we left office in a blaze of glory and total thanksgiving to Almighty God after our tour of duty in May 2019, we have consciously refrained from joining issues with the successor regime in our beloved State. Despite mis-statements of facts in respect of programs and projects of our administration, we were resolved to keep our peace. Having done our level best for our people, we remain grateful to God Almighty and the good people of Ogun State for the opportunities availed us and for the privilege and enablement signposted by numerous legacy and life changing accomplishments that attended our administration.

    2. However, our conscious decisions to stay in our lane were violated last week during the well-publicized Ogun State worker’s strike. In the defense by the current administration, references were made to matters relating to our administration which we believe for reasons of posterity needed to be corrected. TO BE PRECISE, IN THE NEWSPAPER

ADVERTS ON FRIDAY, 18 SEPTEMBER, 2020, OUR ADMINISTRATION WAS ACCUSED OF LEAVING AMOUNT TOTALING N106.9 BILLION UNPAID IN RESPECT OF OGUN STATE WORKERS GRATUITY, LEAVE BONUS, CONTRIBUTORY PENSION AND PROMOTION ARREARS.

    3. Our experience when we assumed office in May 2011 was not palatable. We met a State in dire need of urgent attention and timely intervention. In fact, we met a far more precarious Ogun State where there was near total absence of security for both lives and properties. Banks and other financial institutions could not operate anywhere in the Ogun East Senatorial District. The industrial climate was in comatose. Cultism, Kidnapping, Ritual related murder and unresolved assassination were the identities of a once peaceful and progressive people of Ogun State. In the World Bank Ease of Doing Business 2010 ranking, Ogun State was ranked 36 out of the 37 States including FCT peer reviewed. It was also adjudged the worst State to live by several reputable rating bodies. Infrastructural deficit, decay and retardation were common place. But with the help of God and the support of the good people of Ogun State, we are humbled by the well acknowledged testimonial that we left behind a peaceful, prosperous, and progressive State that we are so proud of, and were so proud to serve.

    4. On the issue of Ogun State workers, our administration inherited accumulated arrears of unpaid salaries Deductions, pension, gratuity and associated liabilities. The then outgoing administration on the eve of the elections, committed to a number of new liabilities under pressure and retrospectively backdated in some instances the commencement from January, 2009. For instance, pension payments to retired Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Service got jacked up by Executive fiat from ₦40,000 to ₦400,000; and, from ₦45,000 to ₦450,000; monthly, respectively. The implication was that from the end of our first full month in office, June, 2011, the monthly pension of civil and public servants went up astronomically. We paid this unfailingly throughout our tenure; May, 2011 – May, 2019.

    5. Then came the National minimum wage barely a few days after we took office. Ogun State under our watch took the credit as the first State in the South West to begin the payment of that new minimum wage in August 2011, applying fully the Consequential Adjustment that benefited all cadre of staff from Level 01 to 17. With that, the monthly emoluments paid to Ogun State workers, both civil and public servants increased by more than ₦1.6 Billion monthly within the first Three (3) months of our administration. We are grateful to God that despite the enormous wage bill, we did not owe monthly salaries and pensions (both to State and Local Governments) from May, 2011 to May, 2019, and we cleared all salary deductions for the same period before we left office.

    6. To put the record straight and for the purpose of posterity, we shall hereby address the issues relating to the financial liabilities of ₦106.9 Billion claimed to have been left unpaid by our administration.

    A GRATUITY

    (i) (State Workers)

    YEAR AMOUNT PAID
    Jan 2009 – May 2011 ₦ 5,642,119,495.41
    June 2011 – Dec 2013 ₦14,977,316,036.44

    Total (Paid) ₦20,619,435,531.85
    Jan 2014 – Dec 2016*** ₦10,808,277,510.65

    Total (Assumed Paid) ₦31,427,713,042.50

    Outstanding Liability

    YEAR AMOUNT OWED
    Jan 2017 – May 2019 ₦7,635,425,007.44

***The ₦10.6B refund from the Federal Government owed to our administration and earmarked specifically (and which was clearly stated in the handover notes) for the Gratuity payment for period January 2014 to December 2016 was blocked together with the ₦5.7B May 2019 Statutory Allocation from the Federation Account (which was to be used specifically to augment the May, 2019 Workers’ Salary) by the present administration in early May 2019, before they assumed office. The refund of ₦10.6 Billion was paid in early July 2019, barely 6 weeks into the new administration, while the ₦5.7 Billion was paid in the first week of June, 2019.

A total of ₦20.69B was paid and ₦10.6B provided for, totaling ₦31.4B by our administration for the period between January 2009 to December 2016.

For the record, the total outstanding Gratuity to the State workers stood at ₦7,635,425,007.44 at the end of our administration in 29 May, 2019.

(ii) Local Government and SUBEB as at May, 2019)

    SUBEB – ₦18,705,681,760.97
    Local Government – ₦4,208,956,965.27
    TOTAL – ₦22,914,638,726.24

A total sum of ₦22.9B was the outstanding Gratuity for Local Government and SUBEB as against the ₦32.5B published. Leaving an overstated amount of ₦9.6B.

    NB
It is instructive to note that a backlog of 3 years left by the previous administration was paid by our administration.

    B. LEAVE BONUS (2015 – 2019)

    State – ₦3,824,481,744.82
    SUBEB – ₦3,191,491,652.00
    LGEA – ₦ 598,438,577.67
    ₦7,604,411,974.08

We equally discovered that the liability under Leave Bonus was overstated by ₦1.6B. As against the actual outstanding liability of ₦7.6B an amount of ₦9.6B was claimed in the publication.

    NB
As we have done with all other staff related liabilities inherited by us from the previous administration, we also paid all outstanding inherited Leave Bonus liability from the previous Administration.

    I. CONTRIBUTORY PENSION LIABILITIES

The Contributory Pension Scheme has been identified as a very tricky one. It was a good initiative, but badly implemented without cash backing by the administration before us. This led us to engage the Labour leaders, and subsequently the law setting up the scheme was therefore reviewed – allowing workers that will be retiring on or before 2025 to have the opportunity of opting for the old pension scheme arrangement. This obviously resulted in many civil and public servants opting for early retirement leading to high increase in the amount of resultant Gratuity liabilities and payments. We did this review to correct the faulty implementation of the programme and to give enough time to provide adequate fund (sinking fund) for effective and seamless running of the programme. We noticed also that the amount of ₦46.5 Billion published as the outstanding Contributory Pension liabilities was overstated by ₦5.1 Billion. As the total liabilities stood at ₦41.4 Billion (State – ₦20.03B, LG & SUBEB – ₦21.37B). Respectfully, we cannot therefore be held responsible for the outstanding debts of ₦41.4B attributed to us.

    II. PROMOTION ARREARS

By convention, the exercise for promotion for year 2018 will have to be conducted in 2019. We conducted the one for year 2017, and was duly cash backed and paid. It was the responsibility of the new administration to oversee the subsequent ones beginning from 2018. In view of this, we do not owe the ₦217M in respect of Promotion Arrears, as claimed in the publication.

    7. We wish to place on records that we made full disclosure of our financial status and deliberately included that of SUBEB and LGAs. This is more than we got when we took over government. The declared liabilities of ₦49.23B passed on to us by the previous government carefully excluded amounts outstanding and owed to the other tiers of government (the Local Government) which was material in amount, and all of which our Administration have since paid.

    8. We gained from our experience and financial analysis that without attaining a financial break-even point in the state IGR, the State will continue to lag behind in development. The foundation and trajectory for further growth of the State IGR which we had established ought to be reinforced by the current and indeed all succeeding Administration in order to meet up on its financial obligations to the Ogun workers and indeed all the good people of Ogun State.

From the critical analyses and review of Ogun State finances vis-à-vis the current and future financial needs and development of the State, the financial break-even point for the State will be if and when the State attain the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) figure of at least ₦12.5 Billion. Without this, succeeding Administration will continue to encounter the same financial difficulties and crises.

    9. The improved SECURITY and massive INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT embarked upon by our Administration

resulted in improved economic activities which attracted private sector participation of both Local and Foreign Direct Investments which in turn led to the massive increase in the IGR from the paltry ₦700 Million monthly that we met upon assumption in May, 2011, to about ₦7 Billion monthly by the time we left in May, 2019. Indeed, in the year 2016 and 2017 Report by the Manufacturers Association of

Nigeria (MAN) and the report conducted by Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC), Ogun State was adjudged to have attracted 75% of all manufacturing related FDIs into Nigeria. Under our watch, Ogun State became the Industrial Capital of Nigeria. We are humbled that we attracted over 140 new Industries which individually invested between $200 million and some few instances up to $2 billion in Ogun State. One of such Industries is the $250 million International Breweries Plant in Bara, Obafemi Owode Local Government. The plant is the largest investment of the ABInBev Group in Africa, outside of South Africa. This is not to mention several others who invested below $200 million individually.

All of these were made possible through our financial re-engineering and the enabling environment that our Administration provided for businesses to thrive.

If our Administration could increase the State IGR astronomically from N700 million monthly to N7 billion monthly within the period of 8 years (2011-2019), then, clearly, there is NO CAUSE FOR ALARM.

    CONCLUSION

    10. Let it be noted that our Administration did not start from ‘Ground Zero’ in terms of outstanding liabilities related to Ogun State workers – Salary, Emoluments and Allowances. Rather, with the help of God and the support of the good people of Ogun State, as well as our Administration’s commitment and resolve to leave Ogun State better than we met it, we are proud to say that we have been able to put our dear State on auto drive, particularly in the area of improved IGR. The Ogun State we left behind can be likened to an Economic Volcano that is already erupting!.
From the Financial Outlook of the State as contained in the Ogun State Development Plan (2017-2030), we were confident to predict that by year 2022, the State’s IGR will be between ₦12 Billion to ₦14 Billion monthly, while a further projected figure put it at ₦20 Billion per month by year 2025. This is no rocket science, but an outcome of a coordinated approach and well articulated plan laid out by our Administration.

    11. In light of this, it is expected that any succeeding administration after us will continue with the Ogun Standard way of thinking out of the box in order to take our dear State to the highest pedestal, whose foundation had already been laid by our Administration and the Contributions and Efforts of those GIANTS that came before us.

    12. Finally, we thank the organized Labour in Ogun State for calling off the strike. As two wrongs will never make a right, we encourage Labour to consider that though strike is a legitimate weapon to drive demands, it should always be the last resort for reasons that the good people of Ogun State will ultimately be the victims of such disagreement between Government and Labour. As stakeholders, we all must endeavor to cast differences aside and work together for the development of our great State.

    God bless Ogun State.

Secretary To The Ogun State Government (2011-2019)

Senator Amosun mourns Prof. Akin Ogunpola

The Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Senator Ibikunle Amosun CON, FCA, has received the news of the death of elder statesmen, Prof. George Akinola Ogunpola, with heartfelt sympathy.

Senator Amosun described the Professor’s demise as the loss of an eminent citizen, an erudite scholar, a seasoned administrator, and a committed community leader who made invaluable contributions to the educational development of Ogun State.

“I recall his sagacity in the management of free Primary Education Programme when he served as Commissioner for Education during the administration of Chief Olabisi Onabanjo in Ogun State from 1979 – 1983

“He was a highly committed community and political leader in Owu kingdom, Egbaland and Ogun State. Prof. Akin Ogunpola remained a model. He was a cerebral leader who devoted his life to serving the people in all ramifications”, Amosun said.

According to the Senator, Prof. Ogunpola was reputed for always lending his voice on national and international issues, particularly in the area of educational development, adding that his wise counsel on the socio-political development of Ogun State would be greatly missed.

“We are delighted to acknowledge and immortalise his socio-economic contributions through the naming of Akin Ogunpola Model School in Ewekoro Local Government after his person in 2016 (during his lifetime)”, the former Governor added.

Senator Ibikunle Amosun however, prayed that Almighty God will grant Prof. Akin Ogunpola eternal rest, and give his entire family, the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

  • Is Senator Amosun really an “Alaseju”?

Is Senator Amosun really an “Alaseju”?

    By Atanda Odewole

Keen observers of Ogun State political developments are still trying to discern the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries. On one hand, the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) seems to be irreconcilably divided with the Dayo Adedayo led faction emerging victorious through the judicial process. This has almost certainly assured Senator Buruji Kashamu the gubernatorial ticket.

On the other hand, the Ogun APC primaries brought a different dimension. While the PDP gladiators fought their battles in courts, the Ogun APC leaders opted to settle scores through the ballots. A former Governor of the State, in tango with an erstwhile Governor of Lagos State have pitched their tent with the official APC candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who emerged through a process described by most observers as lacking democratic participation by APC party members. In essence, Prince Abiodun’s emergence as the gubernatorial candidate was ordained by the aforementioned erstwhile Governors through the National Chairman of APC Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

The other party in the Ogun APC, simply opted to restructure their electoral participation through the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), where Governor Amosun’s preferred gubernatorial candidate and many others emerged as INEC recognised candidates for various elective offices.

So what could have led to this scenario? Is this a case of Ogun APC becoming the jewel of the shrine in the 2023 political calculations of Capo Du Tutti? Or as some have suggested that the Governor is an “Alaseju”.

Be that as it may, the point must be made that as fractious as APC appears, the opposition, as personified by PDP, is equally so weak that it poses little threat to the outcomes of the 2019 Ogun electoral battles.

But in order to comprehend the causal factor of the Ogun APC fracture, it is necessary to highlight the departing pressure points. First is the October 2nd 2018 gubernatorial primary and second the October 7th primary. Both primaries were conducted by two different NWC panels led by Indabawa and Col. Ali Ciroma (Rtd.). The October 2nd 2019 primary conducted by the Indabawa NWC panel became controversial following the annulment of the primary results that threw up Hon. Abiodun Akinlade as the winner. On another note, the October 7th national and state assembly primaries were rancour-free and the results were declared by the NWC Panel Chairman Col. Ali Ciroma (Rtd). These results, won fairly by Amosun loyalists, were also jettisoned by the Chairman of APC Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on the instigation of the aforementioned erstwhile Governors. It is this that finally led to the parting of ways by the Ogun APC leaders.

Bearing these in mind, the question that lingers in the minds of some who desired mechanical unity is that “Is Amosun an Alaseju?” As the leader of APC in Ogun State, Senator Amosun has tried his best to keep the party together as one family. Up till September 2018, before the primaries, the party was strong and united. If all other things were to remain equal, there is a high probability that the APC will coast home to victory in the 2019 governorship election without much ado.

But the same cannot be said of Ogun APC today. The party is now in a big mess following the controversial primary election in which the mandate given to Hon. Adekunle Abdulkabir Akinlade was annulled and handed over to Mr. Dapo Abiodun by the Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party. This was a rape of democracy, the height of injustice and the most inglorious electoral robbery ever perpetrated in the history of APC.

It is only natural that the governor, who is the leader and conscience of the party, must respond to that development. In the midst of his response, which was not palatable to his detractors, we often hear a riposte that Senator Amosun is an “alaseju”, meaning, when literally translated, that he is overdoing things and cannot be kept under check. Haba! I am tempted to say that this kind of riposte on the part of some supposedly learned individuals lacks a sense of history and fails to understand the power play within the party.

A recount of how the APC under Senator Amosun got to where it was, before hell was let loose, will clear the air. Prior to the 2015 elections, a group within the party led by a respected former governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, stirred the hornets’ nest and decided to organise a parallel governorship primary in Ogun APC, which did not jell. In an attempt to avoid the shame of losing out in the primaries, Chief Osoba and co, including all their disgraced candidates, left APC to contest the election under the banner of Social Democratic Party (SDP). Osoba boasted to high heavens that the SDP would win the 2015 elections and put the Amosun-led APC to ignominy. As it turned out, the results showed that Chief Osoba and his group were electoral liabilities as they lost the 2015 elections woefully.

The Amosun-led APC won the said elections with a landslide victory. Senator Amosun immediately initiated policies that transformed the APC into a virile and the most organised chapter of the party in the country. As it were, the rancour-free congresses of the party in May 2018 had kept the other chapters in the country wondering how the Ogun State chapter did it.

Though Chief Osoba and co found themselves back in APC on the eve of 2015 elections, one cannot really blame them for this. Chief Osoba is a well discerned politician. He realised that while he was outside the APC, Senator Amosun had used his resources to build the party. There is nothing bad in wanting to be part of the success story. However, Chief Osoba and co had a different agenda; the intention was to come and hijack the APC structure and feed fat where they didn’t sow.

What happened before, during and after the primaries in Ogun APC is no longer news. Chief Osoba, in concert with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Chairman of the party, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, upturned the will of the people and imposed Mr. Dapo Abiodun as the governorship candidate of APC in Ogun State. The imposition of Mr. Dapo Abiodun was a volte-face.

In his response to this treachery, Senator Amosun didn’t do anything unwieldy to warrant the shout of “alaseju” as some gullible observers would want us to believe.  He only allowed those who were cheated in the primaries to exercise their democratic rights. Would it be right for Senator Amosun to stop them from dumping APC and moving to a new party?

Indeed it is unreasonable to expect Senator Amosun to agree to the Oshiomhole-led treachery. It would have amounted to committing a political hara-kiri, just as Wole Soyinka said: “The man dies in him who keeps silence in the face of tyranny.”

Senator Amosun is perceived to have acted rightly by standing firm without betraying his conscience.

Ogun 2019: GNI, Amosun aide disagree on OGD vs SIA administration

    By Tobiloba Kolawole

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State, Gboyega Isiaka, says the Ibikunle Amosun led government ranks low compared to the administration of former governor, Gbenga Daniel.

The governorship hopeful bared his mind while speaking to Seun Okinbaloye of Channels TV in Lagos recently.

He said the APC led government has not done well in eight years “in the sense of even development of the state, in the sense of priority setting for the state, in terms of looking at potentials for the state, particularly economic potentials for the state and try to wake them up”.

Isiaka accused Amosun of favouring Abeokuta central, where the governor hails from, by concentrating many of his projects there.

He stated that: “Amosun’s development approach is lopsided and not balanced to benefit all parts of the state. He concentrated largely on one area, which is road construction in the centre. I do not have any problem with developing the centre, but that should not be done at the extreme expense of other areas and other sectors particularly human capital development.

“At the end of the day, what this generation will leave for the next generation is the knowledge that we have left in the heads of our people. I think that the government now has not done enough in that area. Again, I think we have too much economic potential that we needed to have continued and do a lot about but he did not do”, Isiaka said.

Isiaka who was appointed a pioneer Group Managing Director of Gateway Holdings in 2004 by former governor Gbenga Daniel reacted to rumours that if he won the governorship election, he would be a string tied to the apron of his former boss.

He said: “I don’t know what that means. I had an opportunity of working with that government, I will not deny that. I think you should ask an average person on the street of Ogun state today and now that they’ve had the opportunity of another governor for 8 years, to pick out of the two. I believe very strongly that majority will pick the government of Otunba Gbenga Daniel.”

The former Special Assistant on Investment in the last administration reiterated his plan to rule the state through a strategy he calls ‘7 Steps to Abundance’. He explained that: “What we mean by that is that an average Ogun state man and woman, young and old should live a fulfilled life, should be able to achieve his potential giving the wherewithal and resources that we have as a state; should be able to live a decent life giving what we have.

While answering questions on his claim to return missionary schools to private founders, which is generating reactions among stakeholders, Isiaka denied making such promise.

He stated that: “It was wrongly reported by the press. What we said is that we will encourage NGOs, private institutions and missionaries in whichever religion, to participate and partake in school development. But that will be done within laid down rules, guidelines and principles.”

“We also said that immediately we get into office, we will call an education summit because the state of our education in Ogun State now is nothing to write home about. We are going to have a comprehensive education summit. We are of the view that we should encourage private sector involvement and this is done everywhere. In Lagos state you have own a school; you have alumni participating in schools, you have all manners of these things happening”, Isiaka said.

However, a member of Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s cabinet, Adeniyi Adesanya has described Isiaka’s claims as erroneous and an attempt to score cheap political goals that is bound to fail.

Adesanya, who is a consultant with the Ogun State Government, warned that people should not hide under politicking to spew erroneous information just to malign the sitting governor.

He said: “When you talk, you must back it up with reasons. I am bold enough to say that erroneous impression will not augur well for any development issue especially now that we are politicking.”

“Governor Amosun has done very wonderfully well in social, economy etc. My dear aburo there, Isiaka, of course going back the days we would say that Yewa people deserve governorship but that is not to say that we should malign anybody, Adesanya said.

The former Special Adviser to the governor on Political Affairs added that it is only logical and sensible to ensure there is adequate development at the capital, which serves as the centre of all economic activities in the state.

He further said that “when we came in to government in 2011, the internally generated revenue was around N700 million. So I ask one of them talking now, where were they when Amosun in his energetic self called all of us that we must all be on our toes at ensuring that we raise the revenue of the state? Now as I speak, the revenue of the state is about N7 billion. That happened because somebody is there who pays attention to details and fears God.”

Adesanya emphasized that a capital city should have the trappings of its status: “When you go to the UK, are you saying Kent should be developed more than the centre, which is London, or Manchester, Glasgow more developed? The capital is the centre of economic sanctity. Therefore, when you have a capital, it must look like a capital. Abeokuta for too long has experienced a lot of underdevelopment. It is the benefit of the capital that will spread to all other parts of the state.

“I will ask this person that is talking (Isiaka), is Imeko Afon the way it used to be? In Ilaro, Aiyetoro, go and see what we did there, it is monumental, even my own town in Sagamu”, he said.

  • Ogun APC Primaries: Amosun, Oshiomole should sheathe their swords – Adaramola

Ogun APC Primaries: Amosun, Oshiomole should sheathe their swords – Adaramola

The All Progressives Congress in Ogun State has been advised to put its house in order so as not to scuttle its chances of winning the governorship seat in the state at the 2019 general elections.

A public relations professional Tope Adaramola warned in an interview that if political actors in the state and at the national level do not sheathe their swords the fortunes of the party at all elective levels might be affected drastically.

Adaramola who made this known in Abeokuta last Sunday called on Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole to institutionalize the party and not allow their disagreement put the party in Ogun state in a difficult situation.

The political analyst also berated Governor Amosun who has been vocal about the situation. He said, “the other man in the person of Dapo Abiodun appeared to be more matured in his outlook and handling of the situation unlike the governor who has been throwing tantrums at every opportunity”.

It is understandable that it is painful for the candidate of the governor to lose out against his plans and agenda, he should also know that the party is supreme and it is better to have power retained within the house than giving it to the opposition, ADC especially” Adaramola said.

While commenting on the consequence of the political imbroglio, Adaramola said that the APC is unwittingly strengthening the chances of Gboyega Isiaka of the ADC, a native of Yewa who had contested twice under the platforms of Peoples Democratic Party in 2011 and Peoples Party of Nigeria in 2015. He stated that if all issues are not resolved amicably the situation will whip up sentiments for Isiaka riding first on the Yewa agenda and secondly on public sympathy for coming out to contest for governorship at a record third time.

About two days ago, President Muhammadu Buhari had sent a reconciliation committee to the state who met All Progressives Congress (APC) state assembly candidates to resolve the crisis, which resulted from party primaries in the state.

The committee is headed by Hon. Sandra Oladele, who assured party members that all aggrieved parties would be reconciled.

  • Ogun to become ICT hub, government approves new policy

Ogun to become ICT hub, government approves new policy

    By Tobiloba Kolawole

The Ogun State Government has on Tuesday approved a policy on information and Communication Technology with a vision to make the state IT driven and a key player in the Info-tech sector using ICT as an engine for sustainable development and global competitiveness.

In an exclusive interview, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Ogun State on ICT, Bunmi Adebayo said “the approval of the new ICT policy and implementation strategy goes a long way to show the commitment of Governor ibikunle Amosun to transforming the state into an ICT driven economy, which is part of the mission to rebuild agenda”.

Adebayo also stated that “the Ogun State government deemed it imperative to put in place an ICT policy in response to emerging global reality, to bridge digital divide and to enhance the quality of service delivery from government to the people of Ogun State and other stakeholders”.

The policy, which is tagged ‘Deploy ICT’ is designed to ensure that information and communication technology resources are available for research and development, urban and rural development, agriculture and forestry, including trade and investment for the purpose of fast tracking development in Ogun state.

“Some of the objectives of this policy are to empower Ogun residents to participate in software and IT development, integrate IT in mainstream education and build a pool of IT literate manpower in the civil and public service” Adebayo said.

The special adviser further reiterated that “In agriculture, ICT will be used to improve food production and security, in tourism, it will be used for the promotion of all our tourist potentials and in environment among others, ICT will be deployed to re-engineer and improve urban and rural development schemes”.

Since about two decades ago, information and communication technology has been a catalyst for development in a rapidly changing global environment. It has challenged nations around the world to device bold and courageous initiatives to address a host of vital socioeconomic issues such as reliable infrastructure, skilled human resources, open government and capacity building.

Meanwhile, the state government is set to host the 6th General Meeting of the National Council on Communications Technology. The event, which will begin on Monday 19th November and end on Friday 23rd November is being held at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
