Atiku Celebrates Obaseki’s Re-election, Describes Victory as Independence from Godfatherism

A former vice president and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on his re-election, describing it as a victory over godfatherism and militarism.

Obaseki Wins Edo Guber Poll, Defeats Ize-Iyamu

He said no victory could be sweeter than Obaseki’s re-election and rejoiced with the good people of Edo State for their resilience in the face of the forces arrayed against them.

According to him, “There is a new dawn in Edo State, and the hard-won victory of Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki is not just a victory, but a Declaration of Independence from the anti-democratic forces of godfatherism and militarism.

“No victory could be sweeter than this, and I heartily congratulate the Governor and the good people of Edo state for their resilience in the face of the forces arrayed against them.”

While thanking Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, for his fatherly role in ensuring peaceful election, Atiku said he looked forward to the continuation of four more years of tangible development, and people centred leadership from Obaseki.

Ahead of Ondo State governorship election, the former vice president tasked the peopedom from the oppressive grasp of godfathers to set themselves free from the shackles of oppression and external forces that seek to dominate them.

“And to the good people of Ondo state, my message to you is that freedom from the oppressive grasp of godfathers and external forces that seek to dominate your will and eviscerate your treasury, is possible. Edo has done it. You can do it too!

“There is a new wind of democratic change now blowing all over Nigeria. The forces of despotism, nepotism, and interlopers cannot successfully withstand this force. Nigeria shall soon be totally free from these forces, from Kaura Namoda, to Lagos. The only power that will stand in Nigeria is people power, not the power of godfathers, or despots,” Atiku said.

The End of Godfatherism Has Come in Nigeria

There is a new dawn in Edo State, and the hard-won victory of Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki is not just a victory, but a Declaration of Independence from the anti-democratic forces of godfatherism and militarism. No victory could be sweeter than this, and I heartily congratulate the Governor and the good people of Edo state for their resilience in the face of the forces arrayed against them.

Edo has a rich history as the centre of Black civilisation, and to this, she is adding a new record as the bastion of Nigerian democracy. This double whammy of ancient and modern glories is a testament to a people who have for centuries set the pace as a beacon of light on the African continent.

I most heartily congratulate the Peoples Democratic Party, who stood shoulder to shoulder, with the people of Edo and their Government, in good times and bad. We in the PDP have shown that we are not fair-weather friends to the good people of Edo. In good times, we will walk beside you. In bad times, we will be your loyal ‘comrade’. We will never be a turncoat. We will never abandon the principles we once espoused so that we can dine with our nemesis. Democracy has no nemesis. And this, the PDP has again proved.

I look forward to the continuation of four more years of tangible development, and people centered leadership from Governor Obaseki. I also seize this opportunity to thank His Royal Highness, the Oba of Benin, Omo N’oba N’Edo Uku Akpolopkolo, Ewuare II, for the fatherly role he played as a neutral catalyst for peace. That this election was, by and large, free from violence, is a testament of the long and effective shadow he casts over his domain.

From personal experience, I know Governor Obaseki to be a magnanimous man, and I urge Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to accept the right hand of fellowship that is likely to be extended to him. The leprous hand he is now holding can only lead to a destination of barrenness. He is amongst strange bedfellows, and I remind him that no matter how far one has gone on a wrong road, it is never too late to turn back and head in the right direction. The PDP is the right direction.

And to the good people of Ondo state, my message to you is that freedom from the oppressive grasp of godfathers and external forces that seek to dominate your will and eviscerate your treasury, is possible. Edo has done it. You can do it too!

May God bless the good people of Edo State and may God bless Nigeria. #EdoDecides2020

Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has defeated Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure another four-year term as governor of Edo State.

Obaseki was returned elected after scoring highest number of votes in the Saturday poll, said the Returning Officer for Edo State governorship election, Akpofure Rim-Ruke.

He said the incumbent governor secured 307,955 of the total votes, 84,336 more votes than his closest rival Ize-Iyamu, who got 223,619 votes.

The announcement by the returning officer was coming after the collation of the results from all the 18 local government areas of Edo State where the election was conducted.

Obaseki won in 13 local government areas, while Ize-Iyamu won in five local government areas of the state

More than 12 political parties fielded candidates for the election, but the election was keenly contested between PDP and APC.

Ironically, Obaseki ran against Ize-Iyamu four years ago. The former was elected on APC platform after defecting the latter who ran on the platform of PDP. Obaseki decamped to PDP earlier this year after being denied APC ticket owing to intra-party politics.

Oshiomhole Denies Plot to Stage a Comeback as APC National Chairman

A former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, Monday met with President Muhammadu Buhari in State House, Abuja.

Speaking with journalists after his meeting with the President, Oshiomhole debunked allegations recently made by the Director-General of the Progressives Congress Forum (PGF), Salihu Lukman, accusing him of scheming to return as APC national chairman.

Oshiomhole, who ia also a former Edo State Governor, described Lukman as a tool allegedly foisted on PGF as director-general by the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Kayode Fayemi.

According to him, “You want me to engage in a fight with a pig? If you engage in a fight with a pig, the pig already is stained by its nature and you will wear your white garment, and in my own case, khaki to go and wrestle with a pig? I will not.

“You see, what I want the media to interrogate, how does winning Edo State governorship election translates to returning as the APC national chairman. When I was removed as national chairman, Edo State was APC. So, do I have to win Edo State to become the national chairman? Do I look so unemployed? I’m 68.

“What they don’t understand is that it is not the office of chairman that made me who I am.

“So, it takes an empty brain to suggest that Oshiomhole wants to stage a comeback to become the national chairman. For what? To go and do a resit?

“So, my attitude is not to reply the noise, which is coming from somebody who says he is an employee and appointee of Progressives Governors Forum.

“He contested for Senate against Makarfi, he lost. He even contested against Governor Nasir el-Rufai during the primaries and he lost before Fayemi unilaterally appointed him the DG.

“So, if he is now the spokesman abusing me and all of that, you want to drag me to his level? No!

“A gentleman does not wrestle with a pig, if you do you will always be stained”, the self styled Oshiomhole said.

Edo Guber: Oshiomhole, Ize-Iyamu go down on their knees for support

A mild drama played out on Sunday in Edo State as a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, and the APC governorship candidate in the September 19 election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, went down on their knees, pleading for support from the traditional rulers and the people of the state.

Oshiomhole, who’s also a former Edo State governor, knelt down along with Ize-Iyamu at the palace of His Royal Highness, Edomwonyi Iduozee Ogiegbean, Enigie of Egbaen town and President of Enigies in Benin Kingdom.

The governorship candidate used the occasion to present his SIMPLE agenda manifesto to the traditional rulers.

Ize-Iyamu said his manifesto highlighted some of the measures designed to tackle insecurity, particularly the rising cases of kidnapping, through careful investments and partnership with community heads and traditional rulers for crucial local intelligence.

“We will replace the elitist and detached approach of the present government with a functional and true government of the people, by the people, and for the people with felt policies and achievements at the grassroots,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the Enigies for their prayers, blessings, and warm reception.

Former national Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole at a media conference in Abuja, Saturday, June 27, 2020.

“Two years ago, President Muhammadu Buhari invited me to come and reposition the APC and that since the president in his wisdom has also agreed to the dissolution of the NWC, I am bound to obey him as the leader of the party.”

While commending himself for his two-year achievements as the APC national chairman, Oshiomhole assured of his loyalty to the ruling party and the President.

He said: “Loyalty is put to test when the going becomes very tough.”

Thus, he has signified his intention to withdraw his litigation against the party for peace to reign.

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, who was Thursday appointed as the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker Committee and Extraordinary National Convention, has justified the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting called by the Acting National Chairman of the party, Victor Giadom.
Buni said: “As a former two-term National Secretary, I know the party very well, and it’s all about doing justice to every member of the party. Without justice there won’t be peace. If you don’t manage crisis obviously crisis will manage you.
“Today’s NEC Meeting is a Continuation of the last adjourned NEC Meeting. So, we are in no way in any aberration regarding the party constitution.”
NEC meeting also ratified all decisions taken in respect of Edo State gubernatorial primaries.
Other members that would serve as Convention Planning Committee include: Governors Gboyega Oyetola and Abubakar Bello of Osun and Niger states.
Apart from President Muhammadu Buhari, the meeting was also attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; APC Acting National Chairman, Victor Giadom; governors, senators, members of House of Representatives among others.

APC: Crisis looms as Giadom unseats Ajimobi, annuls Obaseki’s disqualification amidst heightened security

The political crisis rocking the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is now intense as the erstwhile Acting National Secretary, Chief Victor Giadom has declared himself Acting National Chairman on the premise of a subsisting court order issued on March 16, 2020.

Giadom, who arrived the national secretariat of the party in Abuja as early as 9.00 am and headed into the office to take over in acting capacity, in a media address declared the appointment of Senator Abiola Ajimobi as Acting national Chairman illegal and unconstitutional.

Erstwhile Acting National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Victor Giadom

While declaring that Ex-Governor Ajimobi’s appointment cannot stand, Giadom referred to the order by Justice S.U Bature in suit no FCT /HC/M/6447/2020  as the basis for taking over as Acting Chairman of the APC.

“That order could not be immediately effected at that time because of the temporary reprieve Adams Oshiomhole got from the court of appeal on the same day.

“However, having removed the temporary reprieve yesterday (Tuesday) by the court of appeal and considering the fact that we cannot allow for a vacuum, I most humbly inform you that I have assumed office as Acting national chairman of our great party in compliance with the order of the court”, Giadom argued.

In a move that is rather swift, Giadom shocked political observers when he announced the reversal of Edo governorship election screening masterminded by the sacked Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

Giadom, declared as null and void, the disqualification of Governor Godwin Obaseki from contesting in the Edo state governorship primaries.

Furthermore, Giadom, who disclosed that he has the support of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) directed governorship aspirants of the party in Edo state to report to the national secretariat of the party in Abuja between today and tomorrow to come for a fresh screening exercise in line with the party constitution.

Similarly, Giadom declared that Emmanuel Ibediro ceases to be the national organising secretary of the party in line with an Abuja court order FHC/ABJ/CS/733//2018, and ordered the Deputy National Organising Secretary, Muhammed Sani Ibrahim to assume his position.

Meanwhile, since the sack of Adams Oshiomhole yesterday (Tuesday), it was anticipated that the APC National Secretariat had potentially become a battleground. In order to forestall the breakdown of law and order, security operatives in the early hours of Wednesday proactively took over and were strategically positioned inside and outside the APC secretariat.

The security agents, who arrived the party headquarters on two Hilux Patrol vehicles, stopped the journalists covering the party from gaining entrance into the complex.

Interestingly, the suspended chairman, Oshiomhole, who has been in a long-drawn battle with his successor, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, seems to have respected the court ruling as he stayed out the secretariat.

However, there was mild celebration among secretariat staff who gathered in groups discussing the removal of former national Chairman, Oshiomhole.

In a related development, the party’s National Vice-Chairman (North), Salihu Mustapha, also ordered security agents not to entertain any media briefing from the opposition camp.

  • Rumble in APC: Ajimobi and Giadom battle for Oshiomhole’s seat

Rumble in APC: Ajimobi and Giadom battle for Oshiomhole’s seat

The political drama that took centre stage in Edo State in the past weeks appears to have shifted base to the All Progressives Congress (APC) national Secretariat as two top party stalwarts fight for the leadership of the party after Appeal Court upheld the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole.

The battle for Oshiomhole’s temporary replacement is heightened by claims from immediate past governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, the current Deputy National Chairman (South) of the party and Chief Victor Giadom, the party’s incumbent Deputy National Secretary and member of the National Working Committee, as the rightful Acting National Chairman.

The plot twist begun moments the APC announced Ajimobi as its Acting National Chairman, when Giadom, in a statement by his counsel, Chief Wole Afolabi, sighted by Echotitbits, insisted that the order of the FCT High Court issued on March 16, 2020 by Hon. Justice S.U Bature in Suit No. FCT/HC/M/6447/2020 to the effect that Chief Victor Giadom is to act as the National Chairman of the party due to the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole as the National Chairman remains valid. Consequently, the Giadom camp was swift in rendering Ajimobi’s appointment null and void and of no effect through that earlier judgment.

Read the statement by Victor Giadom’s counsel below

“Our attention has been drawn to a statement purportedly issued by the Publicity Secretary of the APC to the effect that Senator Abiola Ajimobi is to act as the National Chairman of APC following the suspension from office of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole by the Court of Appeal.

“We wish to state that the statement must have been issued in complete ignorance of the order of the FCT High Court issued on 16th of March, 2020 by Hon. Justice S.U Bature in Suit No. FCT/HC/M/6447/2020 to the effect that Chief Victor Giadom is to act as the National Chairman of the party due to the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole as the National Chairman.

“The order was given the same day that the Court of Appeal earlier gave Oshiomhole a temporary respite by staying the execution of the said order suspending Oshiomhole. Now that the Court of Appeal has affirmed the order of suspension, it is only proper that the Order recognising Chief Victor Giadom is implemented.

“Consequently, we have written to all law enforcement agencies to implement the said order and any one who attempts to parade himself/herself other than Chief Victor Giadom as the Acting Chairman of the APC would be facing contempt of court proceedings.”
