Southeast APC Leaders Gear Up to Win Anambra Guber Election

At a Southeast stakeholders meeting of ruling All Progressives Congress Party (APC) in Owerri on Wednesday, party leaders in the zone resolved to do all in their powers to win the forthcoming Anambra State governorship poll and harped on the need for conscientious membership registration and reconciliation of party structures from ward to state levels.

Prominent APC leaders who attended the regional meeting include Governor Hope Uzodinma, members of House of Representatives, Nkiruka Onyejeocha and Chinedu Ogah; Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnia Onu; Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba; member of the APC Interim Committee, Senator Ken Nnamani; Managing Director of Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Dr. George Muoghalu; former Imo deputy governor, Eze Madumere, Senators Osita Izunaso, Nkechi Nwaogu and Andy Ubah; Tony Nwoye Chinwe Obaji, among others, were present.

The new member of the APC Southeast caucus, Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi, was represented by Senator Anthony Agbo while longtime members members like immediate past Imo State governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha, Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, were conspicuously absent from the grand meeting.

The host of the meeting, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma said APC in Southeast had all it would take to dominate the zone, stressing the need for unity, brotherly love and genuine reconciliation.

He noted that the Anambra governorship poll was the ground to demonstrate the resolve of the party to capture the zone. He therefore appealed to members to shelve petty animosities and antagonism to work towards winning the election for the party.

“I believe that winning Anambra governorship will make the party stronger in the zone. And we can only succeed in doing this through genuine reconciliation and unity among members of the party,” the governor stated.

The governor regretted recriminations among party members in the zone, stressing that such grievances constitute the major problems confronting APC, just as he noted that the process of reconciliation should begin immediately to strengthen and fortify the party for future elections in the country.

According to Uzodinma: “The problem confronting APC in southeast is grievances, and we must begin today to address it, this will help our party, we need to reconcile all aggrieved members, our party would be stronger and we also urge all of you to help secure victory in Anambra.”

Also speaking, the Minister of Science and Technology, Onu, affirmed that Southeast people are yearning for APC, assuring that it was for “this reason that APC would win the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election.

According to Onu, “People of the southeast want APC, this is why we must be united and be at peace with each other, we must be united to achieve our aims, we will make sure southeast controls Anambra.”

Former President of Senate, Nnamani, informed the stakeholders that registration will commence from the unit levels, where members will cast their votes, stressing that the process will enable the party to actually know its strength at every unit.

Nnamani therefore pleaded with members to take the registration seriously just as he urged party faithful to immediately take part in the process.

Speaking through his representative, Senator Agbo, Umahi said he was happy to be in “the midst of progressive members of the party in the zone.” He disabused the minds of members, especially those who said he was not in good terms with his Imo state counterpart, assuring that he would work with Uzodimma to make sure other governors join APC from the zone.

  • Nigeria at 60: A Dance by the Precipice- Politics, Governance, Policy Making [Part 1]

Nigeria at 60: A Dance by the Precipice- Politics, Governance, Policy Making [Part 1]

As Nigeria clocks 60 years of independence, amidst the struggle to come out from the shock of COVID-19 on its economy, and the recent impasse between labour and the Federal Government over the hike in petrol and electricity tariff, an assessment of the nation’s progress in governance, politics and policy making starting from alleged Interference from international financial organizations such as the IMF, World Bank and AfDB is a good way to begin.

The first duty of any government is to ensure the security, both economically and socially, of its people. Any other consideration should be secondary. Primary duty, ensure that your citizens are comfortable, give them every opportunity to succeed, to have a good life, live a sustainable life, help their living standard. That’s what every government should be bothered about. So when it comes to external influences it should be based on what your people would have to go through to achieve those demands or whatsoever. So it is worrisome that for whatever reasons government deals with international financial organizations, they would have to put Nigerians in a very difficult situation. Nigeria is currently adjudged, if not the nation with poorest people in the world. So with this, why would our leaders want to overburden its citizens with its many policies? Anti-people policies to state it rightly.

There have been several commentaries in the wake of the pandemic that serious nations would rather give palliatives to its people and this issue came up at the time anyway. So there were talks about how much would be given to whom and at what point would they determine who was going to get what? But of course we never heard anything about it again save for N20,000 that was said to have been given to some 10,695,360 individuals in 35 states across the country, the poorest and most vulnerable Nigerians they said; an exercise that was alleged to have been largely fraught with embezzlement. Does this government sincerely have the interest of Nigerians at heart? Sometimes that answer is mostly no. And it is not only under the Buhari-led government. If we look back, it’s always been an endemic, where our government, the people in leadership only concern themselves about what they can get from governance and not what they can give to people, or a good legacy of comfort they can leave for the people. By all means, it is morally wrong for you to put your own people in a difficult situation and even worsen their pains just to gain favours from international financial organizations like the IMF, World Bank and AfDB.

A lot of people have insinuated that the leadership of the NLC has been infiltrated, have been bought and that that’s why they are not really pressing to fight for more, for this injustice done by the Federal Government. Questions have been raised, asking should the NLC have gone ahead with the planned strike last Monday despite attempts by the FG to douse the tension.

Over time we’ve always had situations that caused us to believe that the NLC were infiltrated by government officials. However, if the NLC had gone on that strike action, it would have caused Nigeria, more so Nigerians billions of dollars, a loss that would further compound the effect of the coronavirus pandemic. It is believed that if the strike had held, many people, businesses, income would suffer. It would have caused untold economic hardship. Taking a positive look at it, at least a win. And what is that win? That is a backtrack on electricity tariff hike, where within two weeks as agreed by both parties, certain issues that are critical to the negotiations would have been dealt with. It is not just the right time for those hikes. For example, it is outrageous that electricity distribution companies (DISCOS) will not distribute meters to its customers but enforce estimated billing on them. To make the sore hurt even more, electricity tariff was increased. It behooves on the government and Discos to be alive to their responsibility firstly before any other expectations from the masses. They should live by example. So these are the conditions, government and their allies in the Discos should do the needful by not only providing meters but making electricity supply stable, and then we can look at tariff increase and how it would help the power sector and indeed the economy.

It is an obvious secret that the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan cheaply gave out the nation’s power holding electricity distribution assets to their cronies.  Just as it had been prevalent over the years even up until October 1, 2020 when we celebrate Nigeria at 60, a trend is constant, and that is always vested interest, not the interest of the people, only theirs and that of their cronies, to the detriment of the larger population. It might not be wrong to assume that officials involved in the sales of the Discos have shares in these companies hence the hypocrisy that surrounds its operational policy. It is always about their interest. If anything, it is high time that a drastic action was taken to hold government to the jugular, look them in the face and demand accountability, to say “we put you there and you must do what we want, what we make us comfortable and not the other way round”. Government should not overburden the people; it should rather get on to think on its toes and be creative.

How can the nation have non-working refineries for years, yet our leaders explore oil, export to Europe to refine and then import the refined product for Nigerians to buy? It is a big shame. How can you have hydro electric dams, yet we do not have power. It is unimaginable the lows we continue to sink to 60 years after independence.

The conversation around true federalism and restructuring is still ongoing. When you sum it up, one of the major problems of Nigeria is its foundational culture, attitude. When you take a careful look, one might not be far from the truth to think that the construct of colonialism had a great impact on our psyche including the way we behave as a people and to one another. We might not be certain what our attitude towards social growth and shared interests was before colonization. However, when you look at the idea or ideals of colonialism itself, it was about a philosophy to subdue and take for oneself. The British colonial construct, we would think left the shores of Nigeria in its entirety after relinquishing administration between 1960 and 1962. But we might be wrong to assume so, as it is probable that the British’s philosophy of ‘subdue and take’ embedded in colonialism stayed with us.

If the ideals of colonialism was to subdue and take for oneself, that is about what we see play out at every level of our society. In an attempt not to paint this as solely a leadership problem and then drop the bag at their doorstep because leaders are just a small fraction of people who emerge from the larger society, they mirror the society’s ills and good alike. More succinctly, the idea to subdue and appropriate for oneself seems to be the default act of most Nigerians. It is mostly about what I can take for myself only. The act of selflessness doesn’t seem to preoccupy the minds of an average Nigerian. This very much feels like the basis of Nigeria’s problems. We just want to amass for ourselves; we really don’t care about the other person. So when you ask an average Nigerian on the street about taking leadership positions, you will be shocked the expectation would be to get to office and take care of him or herself at the expense of the larger society.

In essence, amongst other things, a restructuring of the mind, our value system first and foremost is crucial. When a people do not have a solid foundation as to what their values should be they would misbehave and act out of line. For example, the very first step a serious organization should take is to define their values, objectives, mission and goals. This is what guides the operational methods of the organization. But what is the value system of Nigeria and Nigerians, it is obvious, everyone to himself, herself, an attitude of taking for oneself alone. So a restructuring of the mind is crucial.

Recall in 2014, former President Goodluck Jonathan assembled a group of people from across the country for a National Conference- Confab, which he politicized and failed to implement. So while it is ok to give kudos to the Bayelsa-born ex-president for conceding defeat to Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 general election, even though he had no choice but to leave power anyway, he would have left his footprint in the sands of time had he ensured that 2014 confab was in the best interest of Nigerians, not his reelection bid, and if he took a bold step to ensure that the outcome of the conference was debated and implemented. He lost a very big opportunity there.

The problems of Nigeria had started just about when it began its journey as an independent nation. The ethnic stresses, strife, mistrust, unhealthy competitiveness that currently hold us bound have been there since inception. For example, in 1963, the Mid West region was created with the aim of solving the purported imbalance thought to be a part of the root course of instability in the West at the time. Despite this, the ethnic stresses never abated, they are even much worse in the present time. Even within a political party, ethnic rivalry persists, approaching issues from the prism of ethnicity. So ultimately, we should achieve a restructuring of the mind, our value system, and every other salient issue that are important to us as peoples. Even in some religious teachings, there is a saying that: “can two work together except they agree”? So how can we live together peacefully, achieve development, except we sit together to agree? We need to have a restructuring of the mind, a restructuring of our value system, where we are going to as a people, our goals, mission, and importantly what we want to become together.

  • Edo Election: Imo Governor, Uzodinma Says He Never Rejected Outcome

Edo Election: Imo Governor, Uzodinma Says He Never Rejected Outcome

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma has debunked reports that he rejected the final result of the Edo Governorship election which returned Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for second term as Governor.

According to a press statement by the governor’s chief press secretary, Oguwike Nwachuku, Uzodinma said he never made such a statement and blamed the fake news industry.

Governor Uzodinma also denied spending N3billion or $5million of Imo state money on the Edo state election.

Emphasising the report as fake, Uzodinma accused one Stan Walden Newyork as the mastermind of the claims, a name referred to as “obviously a fake name”.

“If the authors of the fake reports still have some brain in their head, something would have told them that since Governor Uzodimma is neither from Edo nor Chairman of the APC Media Campaign Council, the mischief they were primed to accomplish will not fly. Of course they don’t have sense.

“They were also so daft to know that the governor was not a candidate in the said election and would not have spoken on an election he was not a candidate”, Nwachuku said.

    Read the full statement:

There is fake report trending on the social media which claims that Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has rejected the recently announced Edo State governorship election result…

No doubt, the authors of the fake reports are obviously the same characters we have always known who have been signing off press releases using the name and Office of the Chief Press Secretary/ Media Adviser to give their criminal, selfish and foolish intent some measure of credibility.

The recent Edo State governorship election, like many others in the past involving Distinguished Senator Uzodimma, has provided them with yet another opportunity to feed the public with lies, lies and more lies, a vocation that seems to be their only known source of livelihood.

In their desperation to discredit Governor Uzodimma on the outcome of the Edo governorship poll, they have cast innuendos; insinuating that he has rejected the outcome of the governorship election and that he had accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of being compromised, and that the All Progressive Congress (APC) will get judgment from the tribunal.

Their insinuation also includes that the governor said that the entire process was marred by irregularities from INEC officials who, they claimed, sabotaged the system.

Obviously relying on the position of Governor Uzodimma as the APC Deputy Chairman for the Edo Governorship Campaign Council, the criminal-minded writers of the irritating fake news did not stop at that. They had insinuated that the governor described the entire exercise as shameful.

If the authors of the fake reports still have some brain in their head, something would have told them that since Governor Uzodimma is neither from Edo nor Chairman of the APC Media Campaign Council, the mischief they were primed to accomplish will not fly. Of course they don’t have sense.

They were also so daft to know that the governor was not a candidate in the said election and would not have spoken on an election he was not a candidate.

But they could not have advised themselves rightly because having been paid princely to discredit the Imo State governor, their sense of reasoning would automatically be blurred.

The hallmark of credible news report is the voice the writer adds to it and Reuters could not have published a report that dwells on hearsay like the one many may have been deceived to think emanated from that respected news medium, but we know, did not.

To also say that in the buffoonery, nay tomfoolery, of those who said Governor Uzodimma rejected the Edo governorship election result, they signed off with the name of the Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser in a press release purportedly issued on September 19, 2020, but with a template that actually read May 20, 2020, tells a lot about their desperation to blackmail the governor and everything he stands for, using every opportunity at their disposal.

We have always known, since the coming on board of this administration, about the existence of stuntmen who maintain templates with which they pull off stunts mainly fake news, thinking they will derail the 3-R mantra vision of Governor Uzodimma. That, to us, is mission impossible because the governor knows where he is headed with Imo people.

Governor Uzodimma’s passion about taking Imo out of the woods, particularly from the grips of political hawks and merchants of blackmail whose umbilical chord seem tied to fake news and other negative tendencies that cause disaffection cannot be derailed.

He has refused to be distracted, even with the fake news that members of the public are fed with from time to time, because he is quite aware of the reason for them.

Aide Dumps Akeredolu Less Than A Month To Ondo Guber

A key aide to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, Andrew Ogunsakin, has resigned his appointment less than a month to the Oct.10 governorship election in the state.

The unexpected resignation of Ogunsakin, a Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters (South) to the Governor reports stated was not unconnected with the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.

Ogunsakin ìn the resignation letter dated Sept.18, 2020, made available to newsmen in Okitipupa on Friday said that the call by his constituents to join a common train of aspiration. which seeks to challenge the Akeredolu government and his party was responsible for his resignation.

“Permit me, your Excellency, to use this medium to convey my irrevocable decision to resign my office as SSA, Political (South) to the governor of Ondo State with effect from today, Sept.18.

“The call of my constituents on me to join the train to actualise our common aspiration different from what is offered by your government and your party stands at the root of my decision to quit at this point.

“Being an appointee, this will necessarily conflict with the performance of my duty to you, hence my resignation.

“I thank your Excellency for the appointment offered me to serve the good people of Ondo State as SSA, for the period I was in office.

  • Edo: PDP Supporter Boasts Obaseki’s Achievements Will Be Rewarded At Saturday Poll

Edo: PDP Supporter Boasts Obaseki’s Achievements Will Be Rewarded At Saturday Poll

A supporter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says Edo State Governor and candidate of the PDP in the September 19th Governorship election will emerge victorious.

The Coordinator, Edo Redemption Movement, under the PDP, Prince Idemudia Okojie, expressed this optimism in a statement on Tuesday in Benin city, the Edo state capital.

Okojie hailed Obaseki as having performed creditably in various sectors of the state to the admiration of majority of the people.

Coordinator, Edo Redemption Movement, under the PDP, Prince Idemudia Okojie

Commending the Governor for delivering well on the Channels TV debate, he said the achievements of Obaseki will be rewarded at the poll.

Okojie further commented that the outcome of the debate has exposed APC candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s inability to govern the state if given the opportunity.

“It is very good that the political debate on Edo Election was held and sentiments apart, every indigene of the state knows that Obaseki has more to offer the state than Ize-Iyamu and the only way Obaseki would lose is for the APC to rig the election in favour of their candidate.

“If we are to be sincere as indigenes of Edo state, there is no doubt that Obaseki performed creditably well and giving the opportunity for a second term by the good people of the state can only make the state better.

“Obaseki has governed well. Politics is about development. It is not just to grab power by all means without having nothing to show as good development, thereby taking the state backwards.

“But with Obaseki in charge of the state for the next four years, i can assure that the people will witness more developments.

“And if the score card of the debate is anything to go by where Obaseki got over 75% rating, it shows that he is simply unstoppable and every attempt to rig him out of office will not stand because the desire of the people of Edo state is to see him to win re-election come saturday,” he said.

It’s no longer news that Adetokunbo Mukhail Abiru has been chosen as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Lagos East Senatorial District by-election, while Babatunde Olalere Gbadamosi would fly the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the forthcoming poll.

Both Abiru and Gbadamosi are expected to canvass for votes among the electorate who reside and are duly registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) within the senatorial district ahead of the October 31 by-election.

Of note is the fact that Abiru and Gbadamosi have carved a niche for themselves in their various areas of human endeavour. While the former recently retired as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Polaris Bank, the latter is a successful businessman and real estate expert.

Abiru has almost three decades of banking experience and served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance from 2011 to 2015 in the administration of Babatunde Raji Fashola.

Born on March 25, 1964, Abiru earned a B.Sc degree in Economics from Lagos State University (LASU). He’s also an alumnus of Harvard Business School (Advanced Management Programme). He also attended Lagos Business School (Senior Management Programme).

He’s a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and an Honourary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).

Gbadamosi was a governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Lagos State during the 2019 general elections. He’s generally described as the man who won the debate, but ended up as the second runner up at the general election. In March 2020, he rejoined PDP and eventually became the party’s candidate for the forthcoming by-election.

Gbadamosi was born on October 15, 1967. He attended the now defunct Lagos State School of Basic Studies in Agindingbi, Ikeja and also Lagos State University (LASU).

He’s described as a foremost businessman, real estate developer and politician. He’s the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Redbrick Homes International Limited, developers and promoters of the popular Amen Estate in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos State.

Both candidates have impressive qualities any one can boast, thus, the election is expected to be keenly contested.

[Leaked Video] PDP to Buhari: Pull in Gambari, Oshiomhole for Questioning

Peoples Democratic Party National Campaign Council for Edo State Governorship Election has called out the Muhammadu Buhari Presidency over the trending video showing the sacked National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, and the Chief of Staff to Mr. President, Ibrahim Gambari, at the Presidential Villa, in which alleged discussion on the arrests of certain individuals, ahead of the September 19 governorship election, was held.

“Nigerians were alarmed by the video in which Oshiomhole was seen emphatically urging the Chief of Staff to Mr. President on the need to clampdown on certain unnamed Nigerians to achieve political suppression and submission ahead of the Edo election.

File photo of Spokesman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kola Ologbodiyan.

“Our National Campaign holds that the presence and involvement of the Chief of Staff to the President and the fact that the discussion held within the precincts of the Presidential Villa, have made the Presidency complicit and place a huge burden on President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Already, there is anxiety in the public space that the discussion between Oshiomhole and Prof. Gambari as captured in the video is an extension of discussions that must have held behind closed doors in the Presidential Villa.

“The video has validated earlier revelations of plots by Oshiomhole and the discredited APC governorship candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to use compromised security operatives being mobilised by certain individuals in the Presidency, to arrest innocent Nigerians, including traditional, faith-based and community leaders on trumped up charges, ahead of Edo State governorship election.

“It also confirms our stance that Adams Oshiomhole and the APC candidate have completely lost ground in Edo State, hence the plot to clamp down on the people.

“Nigerians and the people of Edo State now know those to hold responsible should there be cases of illegal arrests, assassinations and unexplained killings, sudden disappearances of prominent people, accidental discharge by federal security operatives and mysterious accidents in the course of this Edo State governorship election.

“The PDP National Campaign Council on Edo State governorship election charges President Buhari to reassure Nigerians by immediately ordering that Adams Oshiomhole and Prof. Gambari be pulled in for questioning over the video.

“Anything short of a decisive action on this matter will further indict the Buhari Presidency especially coming on the heels of public anxiety over Mr. President’s widely condemned comment on the use of security forces for elections.

Oshiomhole Denies Plot to Stage a Comeback as APC National Chairman

A former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, Monday met with President Muhammadu Buhari in State House, Abuja.

Speaking with journalists after his meeting with the President, Oshiomhole debunked allegations recently made by the Director-General of the Progressives Congress Forum (PGF), Salihu Lukman, accusing him of scheming to return as APC national chairman.

Oshiomhole, who ia also a former Edo State Governor, described Lukman as a tool allegedly foisted on PGF as director-general by the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Kayode Fayemi.

According to him, “You want me to engage in a fight with a pig? If you engage in a fight with a pig, the pig already is stained by its nature and you will wear your white garment, and in my own case, khaki to go and wrestle with a pig? I will not.

“You see, what I want the media to interrogate, how does winning Edo State governorship election translates to returning as the APC national chairman. When I was removed as national chairman, Edo State was APC. So, do I have to win Edo State to become the national chairman? Do I look so unemployed? I’m 68.

“What they don’t understand is that it is not the office of chairman that made me who I am.

“So, it takes an empty brain to suggest that Oshiomhole wants to stage a comeback to become the national chairman. For what? To go and do a resit?

“So, my attitude is not to reply the noise, which is coming from somebody who says he is an employee and appointee of Progressives Governors Forum.
