Video: Another ‘Trade War’ is Brewing Between Nigeria and Ghana

Another round of ‘retail trade war’ is now brewing between Nigerian traders and their Ghanaian counterparts over the legal status of traders that should operate at the retail market located at Kwame Nkrumah Interchange (Circle) in Ghana.

While Nigerians under the aegies of the Nigerian Union of Traders Association Ghana (NUTAG) expressed shock at the Ministry of Trade and Industry for locking up nearly 50 shops of its members in Accra on Thursday under what it described as questionable circumstances, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) claimed that majority of foreign retailers in the country do not have permits to engage in retailing.

But, NUTAG President, Chukwuemeka Nnaji, said his members have the right documentation to operate in the retail market and they also comply with the taxes they are expected to pay.

Nnaji, in an interview, said the Nigerian traders were not treated fairly, even with their official and legal documentations to support their business operations in Ghana.

According to him, “We got a notice that a Ghanaian committee will come to inspect the documentations of the Nigerian traders. We alerted all our members to get ready for the inspection.

“The Ghanaian Task Force began the inspection at Abossey Okai and arrived at Kwame Nkrumah Interchange (Circle) on Thursday.

“But we were shocked to see the task force forcefully try to lock up our shops even though we have the right documents to operate in Ghana.”

It’s alleged that Ghanaian traders have been mounting pressure on their Nigerian counterparts to pay more for their business operations in Ghana.

The Nigerian traders were initially asked to pay a sum of $300,000 to register for retail trade in Ghana, which runs contrary to the treaty of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). For them to remain in business, the traders rallied round themselves and put resources together to get a group licence with which they were able to secure different shop outlets.

The latest information alleged that Ghanaian government is now demanding for a sum of $1 million to be paid by the Nigerian traders in order to remain in business.

It would be recalled that GUTA had been accusing majority of foreign retailers in Ghana of not having permits to engage in retailing.

Relying on the GIPC Act, 2013 (865), GUTA argued that the law spells out the terms and conditions under which foreigners can engage in retailing in Ghana.

The law bars the “sale of goods or provision of services in a market, petty trading or hawking or selling of goods in a stall at any place” by foreigners.

GUTA recently warned Ghanaian government of an impending massive job losses in the retail market if proposals to review restrictions in that space are allowed.

In November 2019, GUTA closed about 600 shops owned by foreigners, mainly Nigerians, relying on the GIPC Act.

The shops were reopened after months of closure. In order to address all the grey areas, a Presidential Committee on Foreign Retail Trade was instituted in February 2020.

Speaking on the matter on February 4, 2020, a representative of the Minster of Trade, Ntim Odonkor, said: “The issue of foreigners taking over trading activities reserved for Ghanaians which has been your concern sometime has also come to the notice of government.

“As directed by his Excellency, a technical sub-committee has been put together to ensure the implementation of the president’s directives on this matter.

“Secondly, parliament has charged its subsidiary committee on Trade, Industry to study and make recommendations in a by-partisan manner with a view to finding a sustainable solution to this issue.”

It’s not cleared if the the Ghanaian Task Force is implementing the modified directives of Mr. President (Nana Akufo-Addo) or fresh recommendations by the subsidiary committee on trade and industry in the parliament.

Pronounced dead 3 times, Obey shares his experience, warns of Covid-19

File photo: Professor of Music and Juju maestro, Ebenezer 'Obey' Fabiyi, whose style of music, laced with proverbs and deep meanings, is widely accepted to have revolutionised Yoruba language in Nigeria.

For about the umpteenth time since he was rumoured to have died on three different occasions in July, juju music maestro, Chief Ebenezer ‘Obey’ Fabiyi has again reacted to his purported death, saying it wasn’t a good experience.

The 78 year old legendary performer, who was a guest on an Ogun State Television (OGTV) programme in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, monitored by Echotitbits on Friday, expressed disappointment about how people would declare a living man dead.

File photo: Professor of Music and Juju maestro, Ebenezer ‘Obey’ Fabiyi, whose style of music, laced with proverbs and deep meanings, is widely accepted to have revolutionised Yoruba language in Nigeria.

In his explanation, Obey said he was taken aback when he heard his son explained to a caller on the phone that “my father is alive, he’s right here”.

“I don’t wish anybody to pass through such an experience. Because my son was with me we were discussing, I just heard my son speaking on the phone saying, there is nothing wrong with my daddy.

“My son, Bishop Folarin ran inside and said daddy they’ve come with fake news again. From that moment all over from Canada, everywhere, it was not a easy thing for a living man to be declared dead when you are alive hale and hearty.”

Still apparently puzzled, Obey wondered what could be a reason for anyone to have declared him dead three times in one month.

“Then within a month, to have carried such a rumour three times. I’m still asking, I don’t know what those people want, and I won’t even know why. It is still a puzzle to me. But I thank God for everything.

“Nothing is wrong with me, I am hale and hearty, and I thank God. I believe that I haven’t finished my assignment yet, I must fulfill my purpose, it is not my time yet, I still have much more to contribute to humanity and to the expansion of the kingdom of God”, he retorted, as if to remind his traducers of his 1973 track- Baba Lo Ran Mi Wa, released when he was under the label Decca records.

The Nigerian Miliki crooner and founder of the old Inter-Reformers Band, who has always been ingenious in music composition using his personal life experiences, disclosed that just as he had done in the past with tracks like Edumare Dariji Won, he would record a song about his experience while people already greeted him ‘rest in peace’.

“…definitely, I’m going to be in the studio, I’m going to release a song”, Obey said emphatically.

Chief Obey, who had recorded two music tracks in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria, which has been playing across television and radio stations in Ogun State, urged musicians to use their popularity and platform for the advancement of society.

Commenting further on COVID-19 and government effort to mitigate the spread, the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye music professor stressed that it is the duty of musicians to use their popularity and platform for the advancement of the society.

He further stressed the realness of Coronavirus pandemic and advised Nigerians to adhere to government regulations.

Unilag VC’s removal lacks due process – Vice Chancellors tell Babalakin-led council

” I knew quite a lot of people that are yet to believe the reality of COVID-19. COVID-19 is real, it’s not only in Nigeria or Africa, it is all over the world. London, Canada, US, Asian countries, Japan, Korea and Italy, everywhere. This COVID-19 has killed numerous thousands of people.

“People please; I want you to take note that COVID-19 is real. Let us do everything that the government has told us to do. Let’s cover our nose, let’s obey social distancing, let’s do what they have told us to do, now that the government is opening the schools gradually, opening houses of worship gradually, let us comply and let us be extra careful, please COVID-19 is real. Don’t take it for granted”, he warned.

Obey, who started professional music since the mid-50s, is widely known for his style of music, which comprises a variety of Yoruba instruments, lyrics dense with proverbs laced with deep meanings, and musical percussions, merged in a style only unique to him. This uniqueness is fueled by his passion and strong sense of responsibility that music should teach morals that will help build the society.

While he lauds younger generations of musicians, he admonished them to further use their music to influence the society in positive ways.

“I think the young generation of young musicians, they are contributing their quota and they are all doing very well. Their own approach is different to what we had. They are definitely reaching their own generation, they understand their language, what they are doing is great.

“One thing that I’ve been saying and will continue to say is that…and I thank God, I can see them, they have been borrowing a leaf from the advice of elders.

“We have different things happening these days, the ‘Yahoo’ and all the negative things that have been happening. They can use their music because they are well accepted; they can use their music to pass a message. And I can see that they have been doing that.

“Our own time, the way we do it, we are still telling them to borrow a leaf from what we have done. If they add what we have done to what they are doing now they can balance it and it will be a good thing.

Obey, the juju music legend, whose style of music is accepted in many quarters to have revolutionised Yoruba language, enthused that younger generations of musicians should not be discouraged.

“So I don’t want us to discourage them because they are easily reaching the youths, and that is good. At the same time, the ‘Yahoo’ and all the ills in the society, they are something that music can correct. So I have advised that they look into that area and they are changing”, he added.

Bayern Humiliate Barca 8-2 as Pique Says Catalan Club Needs Lots of Changes

1

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique said radical changes were needed from top to bottom after his side were annihilated 8-2 by Bayern Munich on Friday to exit the Champions League in one of the Catalan side’s darkest ever nights, Reuters has reported.

“We feel devastated, although shame is the real word I’m looking for. We cannot afford to compete like this because it’s not the first, the second or the third time that something like this has happened,” a tearful Pique told reporters after the quarter-final drubbing, their worst ever result in Europe.

“This is very painful but I hope it serves some purpose.”

Pique, one of the surviving members of the team who won the Champions League in 2009 under Pep Guardiola to begin a golden era for the Catalans, said he was ready to leave the club in order to ensure they improve.

He also appeared to blame the Barca hierarchy, which includes president Josep Maria Bartomeu, for the team’s predicament as he called for changes at the very top.

“We all need to reflect deeply, the club needs lots of changes, I’m not talking about the coach, players – I don’t want to point the finger at anyone but the club needs changes on a structural level,” he said.

“If new blood needs to come for the club to change course then I’m not untouchable and I’ll be the first to leave if needs be, because it seems as if we’ve hit rock bottom.

“We all have to reflect about what is the best thing for the club and for Barca.”

Barca coach Quique Setien is unlikely to survive overseeing such a debacle, although he did not say whether or not he saw himself continuing in charge of the team.

“I’m not going to go into all that as I’ve only been here for six months but seeing as this is Pique, surely some of what he said is true,” said the coach.

“Right now we feel enormous frustration and all we can do is make conclusions and think about the future. Barca is a club that is so great that this will cause us a lot of damage and obviously some things will have to change.

“The truth is this is a tremendously painful defeat.”

Unilag VC’s removal lacks due process – Vice Chancellors tell Babalakin-led council

0
File: Entrance of University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State, Nigeria.

The Committee of Vice Chancellors of Universities (CVC) on Friday condemned the controversial sack of the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos (Unilag), Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

According to the committee’s Secretary-General, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, who spoke to journalists in Abuja, the sack of Ogundipe was without due process.

The CVC also condemned the appointment of an acting vice chancellor outside the university’s three deputy Vice-Chancellors, said Prof. Ochefu.

“The chairman of the council knows that the tenure of two members of the council has expired, so he waited for the members not to be in council to get the majority vote.

“It is like a hatchet job, we don’t want it to appear like that because of the integrity of University of Lagos.

”The integrity is very high and we don’t want council members to degenerate to that situation.

”As it is now, we have a stalemate and it is looking more in favour of the university senate than the council”.

Recall Echotitbits reported that Unilag’s Governing Council headed by Dr Wale Babalakin (SAN) sackee Ogundipe at its meeting in Abuja on Wednesday over allegations of infractions and gross misconduct.

While the Babalakim-led council went ahead to appoint Prof. Theophilus Omololu Soyombo of the Faculty of Social Sciences the Acting Vice-Chancellor, the institution’s Senate and all its workers unions have condemned Ogundipe’s removal, saying it flouted the university’s regulations.

Siting “extant law of the University”, Prof. Ochefu stated thaty if a vice-chancellor is removed, one of the deputies should be appointed to act.

“Unilag has three deputies, none of them was appointed as acting vice-chancellor but somebody else entirely.

“This is going to pose another problem, senate members will not allow such a person to chair their meeting because they don’t know him within the context of laws establishing universities,” he said.

Ochefu however called on the Unilag Governing Council to tow the part of due process, and make room for the Vice Chancellor, Ogundipe to defend himself of allegations leveled against him.

Ochefu, who stressed that fair hearing remained a fundamental human right, also noted that though the law establishing universities gave the council the power to hire and fire a vice chancellor, it should not be done in an arbitrary process.

“The challenge we have with this particular action is that the university community says the council did not follow due process; indeed, the communication from the embattled vice chancellor is clear and it is to that effect.

“In the procedure for removing a vice chancellor, you have to set up a joint council/senate committee.

”The vice-chancellor will be given the opportunity to defend himself; from there, a submission will be made to the council which will take a decision,” the CVC Secretary-General said.

Authorities and youths home and abroad have been challenged not to despair in their quest and aspirations to attain leadership especially in governance, locally and nationally.

This call came from three Nigerian ladies, who are young leaders of social and development initiatives, in separate chats with Echotitbits Thursday on the strength of Youth Engagement for Global Action, the theme for this year’s United Nations’ International Youth Day commemorated around the world August 12, 2020.

In her brief reaction to assessing youth engagement in Nigeria, founder of the girl-group initiative – Femme Africa, Ayomide Dokunmu said: “Nigeria is one of the youngest populations in the world with an average age of 18 years old. This is why it is important for the youth to not lose hope while we continue to fight for the Nigeria that we all want to see!”

Dokunmu, who has created a community of vibrant young women, together pursuing a cause to increase the engagement of young women in the entertainment industry once lamented the difficulties faced in a previous interview with The Native Mag.

International Youth Day: Gbajabiamila, Atiku argue for youth participation in governance

“We’re at the point where “supporting women empowerment” programs are cool so brands want to seem like they’re doing the work but they don’t actually take the time to engage and see what will make impact- it’s more hype than anything else”.

With a view from the prism of civic and social responsibility, the General Manager of Techplus, Eniola Edun scored youth engagement in Nigeria low.

According to her, while youths in Nigeria struggle for survival, apparently due to economic and unemployment challenges, there is a gap of misrepresentation, underrepresentation, and even the fear to demand inclusion.

“The youth engagement is at the lowest with little or no participation in civic or social responsibilities. Every youth is driven by survival. We are either misrepresented or underrepresented especially when it comes to where it matters the most, we talk the talk but very afraid to walk the talk  hence why most agenda in our favour is never at the forefront of the nation’s agenda”, Edun said.

The techpreneur, who is also an executive member of The Lighthouse Network community – a female oriented network founded to help women build a work – life balance however stated that Nigerian youths are beginning to take issues that concern them more seriously in recent years.

“I have seen a shift in the last few years, we are beginning to pay attention and maximise our influence as the larger percentage of the country’s population”, she said.

BBNaija misrepresents Nigerian youths, replace it – Ọọni of Ìfẹ says

In assessing youth engagement from a point of view of a dual nationality in the minority, Nigerian-British Legal Assistant, Elizabeth Ogunbodede, who has been privileged to participate at local, regional and national initiatives lauded authorities for their efforts at improving youth inclusion in governance.

She said: “Different toolkit and workshops has been designed to help young people understand the knowledge they have of democracy and democratic structures.

“It is part of educating young people on systems of government and leadership while still in a learning environment, which helps to ensure that future generations are empowered with the skills, knowledge and confidence to fulfill their roles as active citizens.”

However, she expressed that the views of many other minority youths are still not heard in decision making in UK communities.

“Many young people specifically Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) have views on the issues which are important to them but they are often not translated into traditional forms of democratic participation”.

Advocating for an improvement in decision making especially in local communities, Ogunbodede emphasized the strength of youths in nation building saying: “young people are experts on what affects them and can provide innovative solutions to problems”.

Elizabeth Ogunbodede, who founded Build Your Legacy, an initiative that seeks to inspire people in her community to find and pursue their gifts, pushed for more inclusion of young people in political systems so as to build trust.

“A lot of mistrust in political systems stems from a lack of understanding of the work MPs, peers and local councilors do, therefore  if young people have a better understanding of how they work for them, this will increase their trust in them especially in the BAME community.

“There is a need to develop the next generation of leaders, if young people are engaged early they will see themselves as agents of change and will be more inclined to see themselves as a future leader, she added.

Last Wednesday, many Nigerian leaders challenged themselves, and youths alike, on opening up the door for young people to participate in governance and national leadership.

The speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila spoke on how to achieve a profound transformation of governance when he urged those in government and politics to “commit to opening the political space to allow for greater participation by our nation’s youth.

Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar assured Nigerian youths of his commitment to supporting them at all times. He said: “I shall stay the course and continue to offer my shoulders for you all to climb because as youths, you are Leaders of Today”.

Youth engagement in leadership is one of the United Nations critical objectives, enabling the engagement of youth in formal political mechanisms to increase the fairness of political processes by reducing democratic deficits, contributes to better and more sustainable policies, which has symbolic importance that can further contribute to restore trust in public institutions, especially among youth.

BBNaija misrepresents Nigerian youths, replace it – Ọọni of Ìfẹ says

1
His imperial Majesty, Ọọni of Ìfe, Ọba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.

A call for the scrapping of ongoing TV reality show, Big Brother Naija has been made on the ground that it misrepresents Nigerian youths.

This call was made by His Imperial Majesty the Ọọni of Ìfẹ, Ọba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ọjaja II, when he hosted members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria in Ile-Ife on Wednesday.

The monarch in his criticism, advocated that the show be scrapped and replaced for what he termed as “misrepresenting the goodness and integrity of the Nigerian youths”.

As a replacement, Ọba Adyeye proposed a new reality show that will project the country’s values, cultures and traditions.
While interacting with the leaders of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, he urges them to work out plans on the show, which will be called, “The Big Nigeria Reality Show”.

“The proposed show will be structured in a way that young professionals, talented individuals and others across several fields of endeavour will be showcased and helped to reach their peak.

“This would help the participants and also help viewers to have access to people that can be seen as role models,” Ọba Adyeye stated.

The monarch, who is highly respected adds to the list of a number of anti-BBNaija advocates who have criticized the reality show.

Recently, veteran singer Charlie Boy had criticised Nigerian youths for being more interested in the Big Brother show than in issues of national importance.

Charlie Boy in a statement posted on his Instagram page said: “A practical reality of who we are as people and where our priority lies as citizens. The funny side in all of these is that we still go to bed, have a good sleep and wake up with the hope to meet a Nigeria we didn’t create. Mumu Nigerians! Mumu Nigerians!! Mumu Nigerians!!!”

Also, the Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Olusegun Runsewe had in 2019 criticised the show for its erotic contents which he said does not reflect our culture.

“…the content is wrong; you cannot be making love, with our children, our youths watching, on air. We will not, because of the money Nigerians will win, destroy our tomorrow because of some economic strategy,” Runsewe said.

The reality TV show formerly known as Big Brother Nigeria, now known as Big Brother Naija is a television competition series, based on the Big Brother television franchise.

The show entails 12 to 21 contestants live in an isolated house and compete for a large cash prize, and other material gifts, at the end of the show by avoiding being evicted from the house by viewers.
